Euthanasia and the Right To Choose We support the right to choose. Every human being has a legitimate interest in his or her own death and manner of dying. We believe in offering the individual some choice in orchestrating that very personal time. For some, that choice will be to accept all possible treatments that modern technology can offer; for others, protecting quality of life before quantity may be the most important element; for others, it may be dying in a way that reflects their living, perhaps retaining some control over the dying process and maybe the time and circumstances of death and, even if it is never used, holding the key to the door marked "Exit." This essay considers a person's right to choose. In 1980, Fast Exit (then the Voluntary Euthanasia Society) broke away from the English society to become independent and so publish How to Die With Dignity - the first "self-deliverance" manual in the world. In 1993 we instigated the International Drugs Consensus Working Party and published Departing Drugs, which was the first scientifically researched volume on the subject. It has been reprinted in several languages around the globe. Both Departing Drugs and How to Die with Dignity were non-profit ventures and, in accordance with clear ethical guidelines, not available to the general public or minors. From 1992 to 1995 we sponsored research into living wills, clarifying the advantages and difficulties of such documents and producing a leading new format that anticipated the British Medical Association's Code of Practice. We published Collected Living Wills, the first international collection in the world. In 1995 we introduced the use of Values Histories, breaking down the barriers to the use of living wills, and published Beyond Final Exit with essays on the latest research into self-deliverance. These initiatives we've embarked on to make dying with dignity an option available to anyone, to protect patients and doctors alike in upholding the humanity of dying well, to seek legal reform, where necessary, and to introduce safeguards regarding voluntary euthanasia. What do we mean by self-deliverance?In Britain, even if you have exhausted all other options and despite sincerely requesting it, the humane assistance of a doctor to bring your death a little closer is neither something you can count on nor something tolerated by law, then hopefully you would consider self-deliverance. Most terminal suffering can be relieved these days - but if you were one of the unlucky ones whose suffering couldn't be relieved, it's time for self-deliverance. A doctor or friend helping you (or even being in the same room with you) when you decide to end your life could lessen the pain, in a sense; companionship is always welcome at the very end. In a country where voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide are unpopular among the medical class, the only real option for some people can be, sadly, to commit suicide. The English language is short on words to distinguish between different types of suicide. The word "suicide" can be used to cover the irrational self-killing of a lonely teenager who is suffering temporary emotional depression. But take the death of a 93 year old man suffering unrelievable indignities from a terminal illness -- who calmly decides to go out on his own terms, at his own time and choosing: suicide hardly seems to describe it, and so the term "self-deliverance" has gradually come into popular usage. SO IF PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE SELF-DELIVERANCE, SURELY THERE'S NO NEED FOR VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA? Unfortunately it isn't quite that simple. There are many ways that people die, but very few completely reliable ways. In the case of a suicidally-depressed teenager, it is perhaps a good thing that a lot of attempts fail; but failure in the case of a rational attempt - to leave an existence of unbearable suffering - only adds trauma and a sense of inability to the unrelievable problems which motivated the attempt. The horrors of failed rational suicides have been well documented by writers; many of these failures have followed good "advice". BUT IF YOU MAKE THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT, WHAT IF IT GETS INTO THE WRONG HANDS? Someone who is determined to find ways to end his or her own life will probably unearth all the known information from newspapers, crime stories and medical libraries. Depressed people may not even bother researching the ways - they may choose violent methods such as crashing a motor-car or jumping off a cliff (though even these methods are not completely foolproof). But for rational self-deliverance, such means are abhorrent - a life of dignity and self-control reflects consideration for other people and the memories one leaves behind. Drugs or car exhausts are more often the method of choice. There has been for a time books on methods of self-deliverance, such as "Final Exit", "Suicide Mode d'Emploi" and "Gentle Death." These books have been available from almost any bookstore. Although their success has drawn valuable public attention to the desperate need for such information, the Voluntary Euthanasia Society does not believe that such open dissemination of this type of literature is desirable. We seek to discourage irrational suicide that is a result of transient emotional depression; but, especially since physician-assisted suicide is not a popular option, we believe that competent adults should still have some say in timing their death if they so wish. For the vast majority, knowing that one can choose the door marked "Exit" if things get too bad is an immense comfort and reassurance. That reassurance, however, is nothing but false hope if the information is faulty. It is a sad reflection on the society in which we live that people sometimes need to die in pain, alone and in secret. A humane law for voluntary euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide would reduce the pressure on "self-deliverance." Until then, people are dying, often badly, and they deserve what help and support we can give them.

The Second Great Awakening was extremely influential in sparking the idea of reform in the minds of people across America. Most people in America just accepted things the way they were until this time. Reforms took place due to the increase of industrial growth, increasing immigration, and new ways of communication throughout the United States. Charles Grandison Finney was one of the main reasons the Second Great Awakening was such a great success. “Much of the impulse towards reform was rooted in the revivals of the broad religious movement that swept the Untied State after 1790” (Danzer, Klor de Alva, Krieger, Wilson, and Woloch 240). Revivals during the Second Great Awakening awakened the faith of people during the 1790s with emotional preaching from Charles Finney and many other influential preachers, which later helped influence the reforms of the mid-1800s throughout America.
Paine had not entertained the idea of independence from Britain when he arrived in America. He thought it was “a kind of treason” to break away from Britain. It was not until the Battle of Lexington in 1775 that he considered “the compact between Britain and America to be broken” (Claeys). This idea of a broken compact allowed Thomas Paine to write a political pamphlet.
One constant between all cultures is the understanding that all lives will come to an end. Throughout one’s lifetime, virtue, character, and morality are sought, through different ideals and methods, with the overall endgame being the most ethical and desirable outcome possible. There are times, however, when an individual may feel like there is no hope of reaching a successful existence; therefore the act of suicide becomes a viable option. The decision to voluntarily take one’s life has always been a topic of discussion on ethical grounds. Whether or not the decision to die is an ethical one can be argued depending on from which ethical theory the act is being evaluated.
In essence, the Great Awakening was a religious awakening. It started in the South. Tent camps were set up that revolve around high spirited meetings that would last for days. These camp meetings were highly emotional and multitudes of people were filled with the Spirit of God. These meeting, were sponsored mainly by Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterians, and met social needs as well as spiritual needs on the frontier. Since it was hard for the Baptist and Methodist to sustain local churches, they solved the problem by recruiting the non educated to spread the word of God to their neighbors. The camp meetings eventually favored "protracted meetings" in local churches.
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was a powerful and successful propaganda weapon used to promote his idea of independence from Britain. In order to prove that seeking independence was necessary at this time in history, Paine wrote about the relationship between society and government, his opinions about the British monarchy and the King, and the freedoms he believed had been stolen from the colonists. Thomas Paine anonymously wrote “Common Sense”, a pamphlet discussing the ideas of independence from Britain. This helped the colonists put their frustrations with their government into words. Paine wrote it so simply that anyone could understand his ideas, and it was quite persuasive. He says, “The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth.” (Baym 326) Essentially, Thomas Paine explains how independence from the monarchy would be a really wonderful thing, and he ultimately explains that this independence is inevitable. He talks about how Britain is the parent of America. He compares America to a child growing independent of its parents. Although at one point, America was “flourish[ing] under her former connection with Great Britain”, he says that now it is time for America to grow independent. He uses the example of a child who has been raised on milk never moving on to eating meat. Although the child grew a lot on milk, that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t continue to grow by eating meat, by gaining more independence. (Baym 326) And he says that while Britain is their parent country, parents shouldn’t “devour their young,” or “make war upon their families.” (Baym 327) He’s using this extended parent example to show that America really doesn’t need a parent country anymore. People are unable to do simple tasks like putting on clothes, going to the restroom without assistance, eat on our own, and sometimes even breathe without the help of a machine. Today, medical interventions have made it possible to save or prolong lives, but should the process of dying be left to nature? (Brogden, 2001). Phrases such as, “killing is always considered murder,” and “while life is present, so is hope” are not enough to contract with the present medical knowledge in the Canadian health care system, which is proficient of giving injured patients a chance to live, which in the past would not have been possible (Brogden, 2001). According to Brogden, a number of economic and ethical questions arise concerning the increasing elderly population. This is the reason why the Canadian society ought to endeavor to come to a decision on what is right and ethical when it comes to facing death. Uhlmann (1998) mentions that individuals’ attitudes towards euthanasia differ. From a utilitarianism point of view – holding that an action is judged as good or bad in relation to the consequence, outcome, or end result that is derived from it, and people choosing actions that will, in a given circumstance, increase the overall good (Lum, 2010) - euthanasia could become a means of health care cost containment, and also, with specific safeguards and in certain circumstances the taking of a human life is merciful and that all of us are entitled to end our lives when we see fit.
Poems sometimes are used to express feelings on society at that time or reflections on what has happened in the past. Sherman Alexia in Evolution reveals his frustration on early American settlers. He reflects on the history of American settlers and what they did to the Indians to make themselves feel good. In the poem Evolution a settler opens a pawn shop on a reservation right across the street from a liquor store. He has the Indians come to the pawn shop and pawn everything that they have. He not only takes everything they have but he also supports their habit of drinking. His main purpose to open the pawn shop was to have the Indians sell their belongings, so eventually he could open up a Native American museum to exploit their culture. Sherman Alexia reveals how American settlers in history took over Indian reservations and forced their own beliefs on Indian cultures, therefore making them feel helpless and taken advantage of.
“Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” (I-10). Ending a life is a big step in the wrong direction for most. Suicide is the killing of oneself. Suicide happens every day, and everyday a family’s life is changed. Something needs to be done to raise awareness of that startling fact. Suicide is a much bigger problem than society will admit; the causes, methods, and prevention need to be discussed more openly.
