Imagery in Ghost House
Robert Lee Frost was born on Mars 26th 1874 in San Francisco and he died in Boston, January 29th 1963. Frost was greatly influenced by his move to New England at the age of 11, his move to England when he was 37, and then his return to New Hampshire a couple of years later. These periods can be seen in his poetry. His poems about life and death made him one of the best-known poets of 20th century and he won many literary prizes, including four Pulitzer Prizes. Frost wrote poems whose philosophical dimensions transcend any region. Although his verse forms are traditional, he was a pioneer in the interplay of rhythm and in the poetic use of the vocabulary and inflections of everyday speech. His poetry is both traditional and experimental, regional and universal.
The main reason why I chose Robert Frost’s poem is because his poems are pretty simple and easy to understand. The poem I picked for this analysis, “Ghost House”, is an extremely descriptive poem illustrating an old haunted house. The imagery in “Ghost House” is marvelous. This poem allows the reader to see the house as if they were standing on the front porch.
You can picture an old decrepit house, covered with vines and wild raspberries. There is a dying tree in the front yard with only one live branch on it. Underneath the tree there are two gravestones so covered in moss that the names cannot be deciphered. Right next to the gravestones is a ghostly couple standing middle of mist absolutely still and silent. On the front porch the current owner stands frozen, half by fear and half by curiosity.
The poem is told through the eyes of the current resident of the house. The owner scared of his uninvited company. However, the owner’s opinion of the couple seems to change towards the end of the poem.
The theme of “Ghost House” seems to be that love can survive anything, even when the body does not. Although the couple has passed away they still remain together. Another theme in this poem could be not to judge a book by its cover. At first the house’s owner seems to fear the ghosts, but he eventually comes to respect the bond that they still share.
“Abandoned Farmhouse” and “Ode to Family Photographs” both capture the theme, essence of family. However, one poem highlights turbulent times and the other emphasizes flaws that add to the memory of family in a positive way. The mood of “Abandoned Farmhouse” is dark and lonesome, whereas the mood of “Ode to Family Photographs” is fatuous and nostalgic. Each poem shows evidence of a mood which contributes to the overall meaning of the poem.
Anne Stevenson created a tragically beautiful scene by comparing a home to a relationship. Her use of metaphors and tone is striking to the sense of emotion, however that emotion fades easily when the poem is picked apart for what it really is. The reader is
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. His parents, who were actors, died when Poe was a small child. Poe was then adopted and raised by John Allan, a tobacco exporter, and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia (Magill, 1640). Poe was sent to the best schools because of Allan’s job. When Poe was six years old he was sent to private school. Poe kept studying and went to the University of Virginia for one year. After one year in the University Poe quit school because Allan refused to pay his debts, and he did not have money to pay for Poe’s education. Later, Poe left Boston in 1827 where he enlisted in the army. Poe served two years in the military after he quit school. After two years in the military Poe was dismissed for neglect of duty. His foster father then disowned him permanently. He stayed very little time there because Allan, once again, refused to send Poe any money. (Hoffman, Daniel)
It describes how the conservative farmer follows traditions blindly and the isolated life followed by him. It reflects how people overcome physical barriers and that later in life come to their social life too. Where a neighbor with a pine tree, believes that this separation is needed as it is essential for their privacy and personal life. The poem explores a paradox in human nature. The first few lines reflect demolition of the wall,?Something there is that doesn?t reflect love a wall?
Craft beer sales saw significant growth between the years of 2009-2012 and they are expected to continue the upward trend. Interestingly, the economic downturn did not seem to affect the craft beer market despite the higher price of craft beer over mass-marketed domestic beer. In fact, craft beer is experiencing growth in sales that other beer categories are not. (Clarke, 2012; Pierre, 2013) This growth has been attributed primarily to millennials. Millennials (born between 1981- 1995) have been described as conscious of affordability and quality in their product choices but also seek to express themselves through their choices. (Rigik, 2012) According to the Brewer’s Association, 46% of new craft beer drinkers are millenials (Clarke, 2012).
Robert Frost's work was originally published in England and later would be published in the US. He was also considered one of the most popular and respected poets of his century. Robert Frost created countless poems and plays, many of them containing similar themes. Some of the most popular themes found in his poems encompass isolation, death and everyday life. Robert Frost wrote many poems; however, one of his most popular themes involved isolation.
Robert Frost, an infamous poet best known for his original poetic technique, displays a reoccurring idea or theme of loneliness and isolation throughout many of his published works. The ways in which Frost represents and symbolizes ideas of solitude and desolation in poems are somehow slightly or very different. Loneliness and isolation are illustrated through Frost’s use of the dark night as well as depression in “Acquainted With the Night”, the objects the speaker encounters in “Waiting”, and the sense of abandonment and death in “Ghost House.”
Typically when readers hear the word “ haunted house,” they think of an abondoned manson that is generally multistoried with broken or boarded out windows (Grider, 147). The house is commonly found on the top of a hill, isolated by a high borken fence covered with leafless vines (Grider, 147). A haunted house generally gains its repution souliy based on its appearances that closely resemble the apperences of a typical haunted house. Eel Marsh House, in the story “ The Women In Black” puts fourth some of these aspects by its odd and eary apparence. The house is described as its own little island seperatted by the nine lives causeway. Eel Marsh house then becomes imposible to get to once the tide comes in. With the house being isolated, we can begin to wonder why its isolated and how it being isolated is significant to the effects it produces to the readers. The house is large, with a rather ominus burial ground, enclosed by walls, loacted outside of the house. Susan Hill describes the burial grounds as “ fifty old gravestone, most of them leaning over or completly fallen, covered in patches of greenish yellow lichen and moss, scoured plae by the salt wind, and stained by years of driven rain (61). The burial ground gives readers a sience of uneasyness beofre the narrotor even steps foot inside the house. Eel Marsh House’s isloation by the causeway and its eerie
The poem “Ghost House” by Robert Frost is a work that highlights the speaker, and possibly the author’s feelings towards death. This is achieved through the use of an eerie mood via word choice, implications of death, and imagery of a happy, yet ghostly, couple. Thus, the poem progresses in moods from first ominous, then shocking, and finally a slightly perturbing contentedness.
