Forbidden Fruit in Holy Feast and Holy Fast and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
The forbidden fruit, its properties, and its affects, has vast ramifications within the ethics of the women in Holy Feast and Holy Fast. as well as those of the characters portrayed in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 2. Perhaps the connection is less obvious with Gawain. It must be realized that this story contains multi-leveled metaphors which approach modern literature in their complexity. Argument will be made that Gawain betrays an isomorphism with Eden's tale. The author's attitude toward the fruit and perhaps toward fasting will become evident. Bynum's incisive argument has been extremely helpful in this analysis of Gawain; but, with respect to medieval women she has surprisingly little to say about Eve and the Tree. Although this neglect is regrettable, it is not fatal. This paper will tend to support the major theses of Holy Fast. The people described by these authors did not dwell inordinately on any essential weakness of women. It is hoped that this refocusing on the forbidden fruit will help us to see more clearly their perspectives.
The isomorphism of Gawain with the story of Eden can be demonstrated only after the stage is set. It may be helpful to think of this isomorphism as a kind of image or reflection. This puts it squarely within the realm of neoplatonic forms. Medieval nobility, often well versed in neoplatonic thought, would be quick to point out that Arthur, the king is a lesser image of God and that his court is a reflection of the heavenly host. By seducing Gawain with spontaneity and passion, Lady Bertilak strips Gawain of this control over primal urges. While Gawain attempts to resist these urges that contradict his courtly ways, his submission to kiss lady Bertilak and eventually accept her chastity belt reveals that he has submitted to his natural feelings. With such an orderly and distinguished knight proving vulnerable to his emotion and temptation the author imposes the idea that perfection in terms of morality and way of life is unattainable as feelings cannot be controlled. Lady Bertilak further clarifies the intent of her relationship with Gawain by shaming him for “refusing to love a lady”(1779-1780). This shame is clearly unwarranted as Lady Bertilak is breaching moral statues herself by being unfaithful to her husband; however, the claim does succeed in connecting her seduction of Gawain to the ideas of empathy and genuine affection, revealing the statement as selfish manipulation motivated by the lady’s desire to expose Gawain’s most natural emotions. When Arthur's court was challenged by the Green Knight, Gawain alone offered to take the cup from Arthur's hands. He showed pride and courage greater than all - by coming forward. The poem is filled with opportunities in which Gawain inevitably was forced to face difficult decisions. During his travels he had every opportunity to turn around, especially when the rain and cold and desolation became fierce. Gawain, however, continued on his way. Three times did the lady tempt him and twice he managed to neither offend her with discourteousness nor accept her amorous advances and defile his chastity.
In the final scenes of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain’s encounter with Sir Bertilak allows Gawain to perceive his own flaws, manifested in his acceptance of the Green Girdle. The court’s reaction to his personal guilt highlights the disconnect between him and the other knights of the Round Table. Gawain’s behavior throughout the poem has been most noteworthy; his understanding of his sin, one that many of us would dismiss since it was propelled by his love of life, enhances his stature as a paragon of chivalry.
Though often extensive detail may be condemned as mere flowery language, in understanding Sir Gawain and the Green Knight one must make special emphasis on it. In color and imagery itself, the unknown author paints the very fibers of this work, allowing Sir Gawain to discern the nuances of ritualistic chivalry and truth. His quest after the Green Knight is as simple as ones quest toward himself. Through acute awareness of the physical world he encounters Gawain comes to an understanding of the world beyond chivalry, a connection to G-d, the source of truth. He learns, chivalry, like a machine, will always function properly, but in order to derive meaning from its product he must allow nature to affect him.
The Green Knight begins to mock the court; and then boldly, King Arthur accepts his challenge. Sir Gawain realizes that this should not be the king’s responsibility for there are others present worthy of the challenge including him. Symbolically, this scene can be seen as a Christian standing up for what he believes in. Gawain says, “I am the weakest, well I know, and of wit feeblest;/ And the loss of my life would be least of any; (354-355). Here, Gawain humbles himself before his lord, just as a Christian should in prayer to God.

Although Sir Gawain fails to maintain his virtues throughout the story, his continuous attempts to return to virtuous decisions makes him a virtuous person.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an anonymous fourteenth-century poet in Northern dialect, combines two plots: "the beheading contest, in which two parties agree to an exchange of the blows with a sword or ax, and the temptation, an attempted seduction of the hero by a lady" (Norton p.200). Sir Gawain’s encounter with the Green Knight and his wife is a test of his faith and morals. As Gawain is tempted and seduced however as long as he trusted in God and his faith remained strong he was safe. It wasn’t until his faith in God waivered and he took the Girdle from the lord’s wife, trusting mystical powers to save him did Gawain suffer. This biblical like parable, was meant as a teaching tool to show people of that time that turning to old pagan habits (like trusting in anything or one other than God) would end in pain. Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights can be considered a Gothic romance or an essay on the human relationship. Their misfortunes, recklessness, willpower, and destructive passion are unable to penetrate the eternal love they share.
