The Scarlet Letter: Hidden Sin People often keep secrets in an effort to hide their sins from others. This is a risky since secrets have a way of manifesting themselves externally, and thus, letting everyone know of their owner’s sins. Hidden sin is a prominent theme in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter. Names like Chillingworth and Dimmesdale let the reader know how, in reality, these characters are, before ever really encountering them. Characters whom the reader will encounter in this novel are going through some type of dilemma on the inside, which begins to show itself in the exterior of the particular individual. In The Scarlet Letter, two studious individuals, Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale, two of the main characters in the novel, each possess their own sins which begin to show themselves in their outermost features, each brought apon themselves for their own respective reasons. Roger Chillingworth's features begin to display his inward deformities externally as the novel progresses due to his attempts at finding the man who violated his marriage. When he is first seen in the novel, "there was a remarkable intelligence in his features, as of a person who had so cultivated his mental part that it could not fail to mould the physical to itself and become manifest by unmistakable tokens." He also has a left shoulder which is slightly higher than the right originally, which only gets more ugly and misshapen with the rest of his body. Chillingworth then takes up residence with Dimmesdale and begins his quest to punish the minister and find out the true identity of this man. After he begins his quest the townspeople observe "something ugly and evil in his face which they had not previously noticed, and which grew still the more obvious to sight, the oftener they looked upon him.” Soon his wife, Hester, finds "the former aspect of an intellectual and studious man, calm and quiet, which was what she best remembered in him, had altogether vanished and been succeeded by an eager searching, almost fierce, yet carefully guarded look." Chillingworth, the injured husband, seeks no revenge against Hester, but he is determined to find the man who has violated his marrige: “He bears no letter of infamy wrought into his garment, and thou dost; but I shall read it on his heart.” Chillingworth comments: “Believe me, Hester, there are few things.
When the reader first meets Roger Chillingworth standing watching Hester on the scaffold, he says that he wishes the father could be on the scaffold with her. “‘It irks me, nevertheless, that the partner of her iniquity should not, at least, stand on the scaffold by her side” (46). At this point, Chillingworth wishes that Mr. Dimmesdale was also receiving the sort of shame Hester is being put through. Throughout the first few chapters of the novel, however, Chillingworth’s motives become more and more malicious. By the time Chillingworth meets Hester in her prison cell, he has decided to go after Mr. Dimmesdale’s soul. Chillingworth turns to this goal because Mr. Dimmesdale did not endure Hester’s shame on the scaffold. Had Mr. Dimmesdale chosen to reveal himself at the time of Hester’s shame, he would not have had to endure the pain of Roger Chillingworth’s tortures of his soul.
The story centers around Rocky Graziano and his transition from rags to riches. Rocky starts off as a criminal, being involved in a street gang and participating in criminal activities such as stealing material objects to sell off for money. The police finally catch him with stolen money; Rocky says that he got it from his father, Nick Barbella. Nick doesn’t provide him with an alibi, and Rocky is sent to prison, but is soon transported to a work camp after misbehaving. Frankie Peppo sees his amazing fighting skills after taking down a guard and asks for Rocky to use those skills for boxing; Rocky refuses the offer. Rocky is sent to Riker’s Island, and is released years later only to find that he is being drafted into the Army. Rocky knocks out his commanding officer, and runs off in order to earn some money to cover up the issue. Rocky goes into boxing and is hired, winning fight after fight under his alias, Rocky Graziano.
One reason is because it helps parents have a sense of security with knowing where their children are at all times. For example, if your child goes to a friends house, a cell phone could be handy if in any case there is an emergency, you are able to contact your child right away or vise versa. Also, if a child moves from one place to another and his/her parent goes looking for them at the place he/she
Cheetahs are amazing animals, that are known for their amazing speed and their gorgeous fur, and who have adapted themselves to life in the dry plains of the Serengeti. Despite all of the adaptation s that they have made the population of the cheetah is declining. With the extinction of the cheetah comes damage to all the other animals that the cheetah interacts with. The ecosystem of the Serengeti along with the niche of many different plants and animals would be in danger with the extinction of the cheetah. Cheetahs are animals that need our help in being saved because they have not evolved enough to keep themselves alive with out outside help. Even though it would be costly to save them, it would be more costly to lose them. Without the cheetah we would be depriving the world of a magnificent animal, therefore it can and should be saved.
On the first day of Chillingworth’ arrival, he witnesses Hester and the young babe at the Scaffold. Now it is really from that moment forward that something stirs up inside of this man. He confronts Hester and makes it very clear that he will find out who, along with Hester, is responsible for what has happened. Waggoner describes his changing of a personality as, becoming a blacker and more twisted person as he becomes more evil (Waggoner 75). In the case of Chillingworth, he really does not need to forgive Hester, what she did was not very forgivable at all, through his side of the situation. Though there was the possibility of him being dead, which changed some of that said situation. But it is the fact that he allows his hatred and anger and all his mixed up emotions, drove him to become an obsessive man. And, once he does get insight into whether or not it is Dimmesdale, who is the second partner in the scandal of the birth of young Pearl, he does not rest with it. His moral values go down dramatically as he continues on with his revenge (Waggoner 74). Over the period of time in the novel, Chillingworth really does not interact with Hester, so much as he does with Dimmesdale when he takes on the position of caring for him in his home when he becomes ill. He takes this opportunity to reinforce his revenge on Dimmesdale. By dropping subtle hints and

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is a study of the effects of sin on the hearts and minds of the main characters, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth. Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Sin strengthens Hester, humanizes Dimmesdale, and turns Chillingworth into a demon.
There were many areas that I saw being used in this service learning event that we have been taught in psychology. We used classical conditioning which is the type of learning in which a response naturally elicited by one stimulus comes to be elicited by a different, formerly neutral, stimulus. Every time a person would walk into the room where we were serving food we would automatically start preparing our food and being ready to serve them when they got into line. We were being conditioned to serve food every time someone new entered the room. This would also be known as a conditioned response. James Frye and Tabitha Farley, the ones who helped with the event, were our reinforcers. Reinforcers are a stimuli that follows a behavior and increases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated. Whenever we were doing a good job, they would complement us and tell us to keep up our good work. This made us want to work harder and do better.
This essay will discuss music events by demonstrating specific examples of the supply, demand and challenges of the music events industry. The supply of music events enlarges day by day. There are many types of these events and also a large number of kinds of music genres. Festivals have been a cultural phenomenom for hundreds of years. The reasons why the first festivals started were religious celebrations. Later on the festivals took part for reaffirming and rivaving a local culture or tradition of the town. The history of very first music festivals go back to years before the century. According to historian, they took place in Ancient Egypt around 4500 B.C. But the first well known music festival was in Dublin, Ireland in 1897 and it is known as the Irish Music Festival. The festivals and cultural events play an important role in the urban regeneration process. The music festivals have become very popular, mostly in young age generation. Festivals or rock concerts usually have a larger audience comparing to other high arts such as ballet, opera or classical concerts. The main reason of this is people are often attracted to see such a performance only because their are motivated by the social status of the attending. Another thing is the performance spaces for doing a festival are much less demanding in terms of renting a building such as concert halls or opera houses since the festivals take place external so that makes it an enviromental performance and not hermetically sealed. Besides it is much easier to get tickets for festivals than for a concert mainly due to the fact that the capacity is not limited. Additionaly people tend to purchase the tickets rather when they are on holidays than back home althought the prices are ...
The Industrial Revolution had a huge affect on today’s society. Practically every aspect of our lives and its mass production of goods stem from those 50 odd years in the mid to late 19th century. It was a period during which mostly rural areas in Europe and America became industrial and urban. (Spielvogel 603) Industrialization brought an increase in volume and varieties of manufactured goods. For some people it improved the standard of living, but it also resulted in often horrible employment and living conditions for the poor working classes. The industrial revolution was a turning point in history as it paved the way for many advancements, however such improvements caused many negative aspects to occur and it was not until such grievances arose that serious change
I am going to tell you some basic facts about the cheetah. The cheetah lives in Africa mostly in the bottom of Africa there is around 7,000 cheetahs there. The cheetah is a mammal which means they eat animals. The cheetah is a carnivore it means they eat animals such like gazelles; wildebeest calves, impalas, and smaller hooted in their habitat. The cheetah’s fur helps the cheetah camouflage which helps allot by catching his prey. The species is now at parts of eastern, central, and South Africa with small populations found in southwest Asia. The cheetah is the fastest animal in the world; cheetahs could go up to 70 to 75 miles per hour in a small
In chapter 4, Chillingworth reveals one of his earliest signs of malevolence. After his delayed travel, Hester’s husband arrives in Boston to find Hester publicly disciplined on a scaffold for her conviction of adultery. Ashamed by his wife, he goes incognito as a doctor, taking the name “Rodger Chillingworth”. Now, it is the first opportunity Hester and Chillingworth have had to have a face to face communication with each other in two years. He visits her in prison to provide her with medical assistance, where he also construes his vengeance for the man his wife committed the affair with. He tells her, “Never, sayest thou?” rejoined he, with a smile of dark and self-relying intelligence. “Never know him! Believe me Hester, there are few things—whether in the outward world, or, to a certain depth, in the invisible sphere of thought—few things hidden from the man who devotes hi...
After working on this project, I came to conclusion that typical students and special needs student should come together because our differences can be beneficial to one and other. I really enjoyed this project, I felt that I did not only argue for special needs students to be in typical classrooms, but I also made an argument for students with differences coming together.
People live with lies every day. Everyone from the President of the United States to the poorest beggar in New York City has told a lie. White lies, gray lies, and plain old dirty fat lies are strewn forth every day like water from a fountain. The only true difference between them is the amount of guilt they place on the liar. If they feel guilt, then they suffer greatly throughout their lives, from lots of small indiscretions or just one large one. The majority of the people in this world have the ability to alleviate their guilt through some kind of penance, but for some that is not enough. Nothing they do can erase the feeling of guilt and the knowledge they did something wrong. People like this make themselves sick with worry and regret, and they often die of their disease: depression. Those people who do manage to drop their guilt become productive members of society again because they have reconnected with the rest of the human race. They dont deny their guilt or their crimes, they just acknowledge there are some things they cannot change, they can just try to make up for them. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the decision of the characters to either admit or hide the truth determines the quality of their lives. While Hester Pryne admits her sins and resolves them over time through her charity work, Arthur Dimmsdale bottles up his sins and, even though he physically tortures himself, cannot resolve his great misdeeds.
Hester was certainly not the only person affected in all of this. Roger Chillingworth had a "slight deformity of the figure" which later reflected the transformation his soul would make (56). In the first meeting of Hester and Chillingworth, Hester asks, "Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?" and Chillingworth replies, "Not thy soul. No, not thine!" (70). Chillingworth's plan becomes obvious at this point in the novel. He is planning to get revenge on Pearl's secret father, Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is always around tormenting Dimmesdale, reminding him of what he had done. Chillingworth knows he is becoming devilish. During a meeting between him and Hester, he tells her to "let the black flower blossom as it may" (152). He accepts the change and doesn't want to be back to normal. His soul purpose in life was to torture others, but in the end Dimmesdale had died. Roger Chillingworth died not too long after Dimmesdale.
