Bravery of All Kinds
The definition of bravery is in an ambiguous state. “The quality of being brave”(Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary)as the dictionary references, gives no sense of what bravery truly is. The range for this quality is broad and has many different meanings to different people. Bravery is the determination to carry out deeds of courage, both great and small, while seeking no recompense. Bravery is a trait that can be seen in literature, throughout history, and in the real world.
Bravery is a quality that can be recognized throughout the Psalms. The narrator of Psalms shows bravery when he says, “Though I walk through darkness; I fear no harm, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff comfort me”(Psalms 22:4). He
is brave enough to put his life in the hands of God. He has enough faith and bravery to trust God so much that he “fears no harm” whilst walking through darkness(Psalms 22:4). This kind of bravery may not seem very important but perhaps, it is the most important. The Patriots during the revolutionary war also showed a lot of bravery. This war was the war that established an independent America, and the Patriots were the ones who stood up for that. They went against the royalist beliefs and stood for what they believed in. That takes a great amount of courage, yet while also standing up for their beliefs they also put their lives and their families’ lives on the line. Throughout history, there has been many great deeds and acts of bravery but standing up for what one believes in is very hard, and to also fight for it, is very brave. This trait is a characteristic that is present every day. At school, being brave can mean many different things. Standing up to the bully who harasses the younger children takes courage. Overcoming personal fears such as public speaking is brave, whether many people have this common fear or not. Participating in class by presenting new ideas or opinions takes courage and is labeled as brave. Bravery is the ability to step out of one’s comfort zone to show great courage on a grand or personal scale. Everyone has the ability to be brave. Bravery is found from deep within and it is a trait that many people have or work for. The ability to be brave is admirable and it helps with self realization. Without bravery, goals could never be achieved, risks could never be taken. Bravery is a key element needed everyday to overcome problems whether they may be small or large.
Bravery isn't having no fear; it is accepting and welcoming your fears and getting past
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
The Red Badge of Courage is not a war novel. It is a novel about life. This novel illustrates the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Stephen Crane uses the war as a comparison to everyday life. He is semi-saying that life is like a war. It is a struggle of warriors—the every day people—against the odds. In these battles of everyday life, people can change. In The Red Badge of Courage, the main character, Henry Fleming, undergoes a character change that shows how people must overcome their fears and the invisible barriers that hold them back from being the best people—warriors, in the sense that life is war—they can be. Henry has a character change that represents how all humans have general sense of fear of the unknown that must be overcome.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
What do all heroes have? Courage! The. Rosa Parks, Monuments Men, and the International Women of Courage are all the definitions of courage. Being courageous means having strength, bravery, and determination in your beliefs.
Bravery is a trait that every young boy wishes to have. It is a desire that is embedded into each human being. It is only whether or not he or she acts on this desire to be brave that matter s. Aristotle writes, “{Bravery} courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees the others.” When Beowulf heard of the atrocities that Grendle was committing to the people of Herot, it was bravery that brought him there as their savor, and without fear he would
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
Bravery today has changed from that of Anglo-Saxon times. In the poem, Beowulf uses his bare hands to defeat the evil, monstrous Grendel. He believes that it would be braver and mightier if he were to defeat Grendel without use of a weapon. “My lord Higlac/ Might thing less of me if I let my sword/ Go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid/ Behind some broad linen shield: my hands/ Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life/ Against the monster (15).” However, in modern times, bravery is associated and accompanied by weaponry.
The definition of bravery in the Standard College Dictionary Canadian Edition is, "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness, calmness, and firmness." Bravery is a quality that is shown by many of the characters in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters are brave in their effort to protect physical well-being, personal values, their reputation and sanity. In the novel the characters exhibit genuine bravery in order to guard the things important to them.
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
According to Meriam-Webster dictionary, bravery means the quality that allows someone to do things that are dangerous or frightening. Living in this world, people need to have bravery, but unfortunately it is hard to achieve. When people do not know how dangerous a situation is, they are not afraid of it. In certain situations, people are so unaware of how dire that situation is that they are foolish and reckless. In these situations, people are more reckless than brave, but still contain a bit of bravery. Children are often the most brave and reckless people; they are simply too naïve to see the danger in a situation. For the most part, Bruno, like many children, is brave and reckless but sometimes shows fear; he is not afraid to disobey authority and befriend someone from the other side of the fence. (106-115) Crawling under the fence, Bruno proves his hard to achieve bravery. (206)
In the opening stage of battle bravery is seen from the leader. The leader is trying to instill the warriors with bravery so that they will be able to fight and conquer the opposing enemy when the time for battle comes. When the actual battle takes place bravery is seen abundantly from all the warriors as they fight side by side with one another in an attempt to win the battle against their foes. Bravery is also seen at the end of the battle when the two leaders come together to form a treaty between the two sides. Within the fraternity system one can see bravery take place during the initiation or hazing aspect of the fraternity. Within the story of Beowulf the main character Beowulf must show bravery when he fights Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and the dragon. When Beowulf fights Grendel, he is showing bravery by fighting for his kingdom and getting rid of the monster that attacks his village with spite. “…Beowulf was granted/ the glory of winning; Grendel was driven/under the fen-banks, fatally hurt, /to his desolate lair” (Beowulf, lines 817-820). Beowulf showed no fear in defeating his foe. Beowulf shows another sign of bravery when he fights Grendel’s mom under water. “Beowulf got ready, / donned his war-gear, indifferent to death: / his mighty, hand-forged, fine-webbed mail / would soon meet with the menace underwater” (Beowulf, lines1441-1444). In this passage the words indifferent to
However, I think it shows great character when you are selfless and not just in it for yourself. I’m beginning to think that it's not just bravery in it of itself, but it is also selflessness, which shows a person's inner motives. Another idea I have is perspective. For example at the beginning of page 458 Tris says that bravery also has to do with perspective.
In this essay I will be describing the virtue of bravery. I will first define what
