Free Agent Nation opened my eyes to new possibilities. I always thought it would almost be impossible to work on my own or be my own boss. Free Agent Nation showed me that working for myself is something I can do. One of the first things the book did for me was that it describes the key to understanding the social and economic climate of the United States of America. It also describes what a free agent is, a worker who works on their own terms without anyone controlling what the person does. Free agents are changing the way America approaches jobs. It used to be car, computer, shipping companies had the most employees. Now it’s the temp agencies that have the most man power. The full time job has become the thing of the pass. Free agents still work a lot, but they get to choose when they work. Doing this gives a free agent the ability to control their schedule. Which this can cause a very unstable life. Most free agents don’t work alone though, they work in groups. Some free agents meet up to exchange information and offer support. There are many different types of these groups. There is confederations which are casual meetings of free agents. Then there is entreprenetworks which are groups of small entrepreneurs who pay a fee to be in the meetings. There is also alumni associations which are groups of free agents who came from the same company. The purpose of these groups are to keep the community together. Connections is one of the most important things for a free agent. A free agent’s connections are need to be more firm and almost friendly. What keeps a free agent going is the great saying “I scratch your back, you scratch my back.” This is pretty much saying that if I help you, I expect you to help me. One of the ways it changed is that a free agent’s knowledge and talent is now the resource that a client pays for instead of a company’s service. Another way it has changed is that it is more personal, you don’t have to contact some faceless organization. In the past, work usually meant separating the job and family into two different categories. Now free agents are putting them into the same category. People used to have to balance work and family. Free agents are blending the two together. There are not many laws pertaining to the free agent. Especially in health insurance, taxes, and zoning laws. There is no dedicated health insurance for a free agent. Most free agents either have to pay for their own health insurance, which is expensive, or they go without health insurance all together. Taxes are also a problem because the US tax code almost penalizes free agents by making them pay more for their taxes because they don’t have a traditional job.
