Frederick Douglass was the author of the narrative of his own life. He titled this work “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave”. Frederick Douglass is definitely a reliable authority for this topic because he wrote it about his own life. That makes his work both a primary document and first handed. The book focuses on Douglass’s journey as a slave. He was born into slavery as Frederick Bailey, and he loses his mom shortly after birth because of this. Considering that he lived through these experiences, I do not believe that I would be one to question the evidence he provides. The book is not written solely on his opinions on white slave owners nor his opposition to slavery. He provides us with his experiences to help us try and see where he is coming from. During his experience with Mr.Covey (the man who was made to “break” slaves), he tells us about what happened rather than to only mention how crushed he was during those first six months. “I had been at my new home but one week before Mr. Covey gave me a very severe whipping, cutting my back. . .” (pg. 51). These experiences he provides help one see why he would be bitter towards whites as opposed to only showing his bitterness towards whites. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave is a book that is well worth reading. The personal experiences shared by Douglass really help one see how life for a slave was during this time period. Even though the book may be hard to relate to solely because of the time period difference, it is not hard to see the struggle that was existent during Douglass’s lifetime. This book is very educational and easy to understand which is why I would recommend it to anyone searching for a book to write a 10th grade history paper
