Freak the Mighty In the book, “Freak the Mighty,” by Rodman Philbrick, the book is taken place in new hampshire. An overly big kid named Max always thinks low of himself. But that all changed when he found a new kid in town named Freak, who has Morquio's syndrome, which means that he’s growing on the inside, but not the outside. As time passes, the two become very good friends, and they go on various adventures. One adventure was them going to the hospital, where freak is getting fitted to get a new bionic body. Another adventure led to the place that Max’s grandmother didn’t want Max to go near, called the testaments, where biker gangs go and live, to return a lost purse belonging to Loretta Lee, who lives with Iggy Lee who knows Max’s …show more content…
father who was convicted of murdering Max’s mother, which caused everyone to fear him, even Max’s family.
But when Max’s grandpa tells him that his dad is on parole, Max freaks out. One night, Max’s dad kidnaps Max, and tries to convince Max that he was wrongly accused, and swears he did not do anything, but Max still shows some doubt. So, Max’s dad ties him up to a chair in an old building. Loretta finds Max, and tries to help him out. But Max’s dad finds her unleashing Max, so Max’s dad strangles Loretta. Max tries to fight back but then he also gets choked. Then, out of nowhere, Freak approaches Max’s dad with a squirt gun saying that there's sulfuric acid in the gun, even though there is just soap, curry powder, and vinegar in the gun. After Freak shoots Max’s dad in the eyes, they manage to run away, and the police arrest Max’s dad. A little bit later, Max throws a birthday party, which Freak has a seizure later at the party and gets rushed to the hospital, which he late passes away, and Freak was just told that he was going to get a bionic body to give him …show more content…
something to live for. Throughout the book, Max went through many changes.
Before he met Freak, he was miserable. He got bad grades, and was called kicker because whoever did something to him, he would reward them with a powerful and painful kick. He also had a very low self esteem, and would just stay in his basement would rarely go out of the house because he literally had no friends, and many enemies. But that was until he met freak. He admired him for all of his intelligence, and would go outside more. He looked up at Freak for having the will to live, although he had many disadvantages. If Max had never given Freak a chance at showing who he is, then Max’s dad would have gotten away with 2 more deaths (Max, an Loretta), and Max never would have made a positive change. But the biggest change that Max made ever since he met Freak, was that he put things into perspective, and didn’t just recklessly do stuff that would get him into trouble. That's why Freak was one of the most important things that came into Max’s life, which caused him to change throughout the
book. The change that Max went through because of Freak does relate to me, because some of my friends helped me change. Not completely like Freak did to Max, but my friends did change me positively and negatively. When we are all young, we feel like we are the only living organisms in the world, and we rule over everything. But our friends and parents teach us that other people exist as well, and that we need to treat others the way you want to be treated. Even though I didn’t change drastically like Max did, I can still relate to him, because my friends can’t fully control me, but they can influence me to make the right choice.
Wait Till Next Year is a book written by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Wait Till Next Year is a book written in Goodwin’s point of view set in Rockville Center, New York. The book begins with Goodwin’s father teaching her the scorekeeping rules of baseball in the summer of 1949. After her father taught her how to properly record a baseball game she would sit in front of the radio and listen to the game every day and would record everything each player did during that game. Then when her father would arrive home from work she would relay to him all that had happened during the game of that day. As Goodwin looks back on this in her book she begins to think that it is because of these times with her father that she has a love for history and for storytelling.
An example of their adventures is when Kevin mouths at Tony D. and his gang, defending Max and himself; after of which he discovers that Max could not have fought Tony and incredulously questions, “You mean you couldn’t take him and I was giving him lip?” (31). Kevin’s words reveal his trust in Max. He incited Tony, believing Max would be able to protect the both of them. The boys’ next conflict, an encounter with Iggy, the head of a troublemaking motorcycle gang, and Loretta, his wife, show Max’s concern for Kevin and his wanting to keep Kevin safe: “I feel real bad for Freak because he hated it when people try to rub his head for luck, but I don’t say a word, I just run us home, thumping the short way back around the pond, and my big feet never trip me up because I’m on automatic, I’m this running machine” (72). Max is very attuned and sensitive to Kevin’s feelings, an important quality in a friendship. Also, his desire to protect Kevin and keep him away from Iggy and Loretta prevent his clumsiness from impeding his speedy progress to home. The conflicts Freak the Mighty encounter prove the boys’ undeniable teamwork and

On the contrary, these good traits could have came from Max’s caretakers, Grim and Gram. These were the same people that raised his mother, and it could have been that both mother and son had such positive character traits because of their parentage. The only hole in this point is that, as described by Max, before Max ‘rescued’ Freak at the fourth of July firework show, Grim and Gram didn’t pay much attention to him, or weren’t exactly well-warmed toward him. I can assume that throughout his childhood, he didn’t interact too heavily with his grandparents, and not much nurturing had occurred. This decreases the overall impact of Grim and Gram’s parenting, and strongly suggests that the capacity to be a good person, just like his mother, must have

It is evident that Max tries to escape his reality and get lost in a world where he can find freedom from his complex troubles, much like every other child in the world today whom does not know how to deal with such chaotic and complicated thoughts. Max, unknowingly comes face to face with all his emotions through the lives of others, helping him to come to an understanding in his escape. In the film “Where the Wild Things Are” Max’s sister ignores him, he feels his mothers new boyfriend is taking her from him and he is overall portrayed as a lonely, lost character. Max is told by his mother that he has gone out of control, which essentially is the last straw in initiating him to run away to where he eventually ends up where the wild things are. According to the article “Fantasy - Necessary for Sanity and Morality” in order for proper development, “A child needs to understand what is going on within his conscious self so that he can cope with that which goes on within his unconscious.” This can be attained by daydreaming through stories and scenarios to ...
