Freak the Mighty

In the story, Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick tells the story of two unlikely friends, came along. He encouraged Max to read and write more often. Max had always sat in the “down both with unique imperfections. With Freak’s (Kevin’s) brain and Max’s size, the extraordinary friendship creates “Freak the Mighty”. Max was never too fond of reading or writing until Freak under” (the basement) reading comics, but then Freak had helped him come out of his shell. The author illustrates how someone can impact another one’s life.

During the story, Freak and Max demonstrate friendship when Max carries Freak on his shoulders. 1) Max demonstrates compassion by carrying Freak because he has a physical disability and he has trouble walking, and Freak demonstrates compassion by showing Max that he is smarter than he thinks he is. Together the friends survive attacks by Tony D., his gang, and their classmates. They join forces to go on quests slaying dragons and helping damsels in distress. 2) On page 78, the author states,”I’m standing there with Freak high above me and it feels right, makes me feel strong and smart.” This shows that not matter what you look like or what you know, a friendship will always happen.

Furthermore, Freak helped Max build his confidence.

Freak thought Max that there is more to the world than his basement and comic books. Max likes to read comic books because there are more pictures than words. 1) The author quotes,”I never had a brain until Freak came along, and let me borrow his.” This shows that Freak helped Max build his knowledge of the world. 2) Freak gave Max his own dictionary so Max could lean on his free time. Max was never sharing his full potential to Freak until he helped Max to open up and show his full

potential.

In Freak’s life, Max proved that Freak means the world to him. When Freak was in the hospital Max, snuck out of his basement to go confort Freak in his time of need. 1) On page 86, the author states, ”He can’t talk, all that he can do is look at me and try to say with his eyes, and then 1I’m running to get the nurse.” Max cares deeply for Freak and doesn’t want any harm to come to him. Freak also knew that he was a big part in Max’s life. 1) You can infer that since Freak knew he wasn’t going to live a very long life, he wanted Max to have fun with him while it lasted. These are just some of the reasons why Max proved that Freak means the world to him.

Throughout the book, the author states many reasons why friendship can be an important role in someone's life. The text has shown that Freak and Max demonstrate friendship when Max carries Freak on his shoulders, Freak helped Max build his confidence, and Max proved that Freak means the world to him. The theme of the book that is backed up by evidence is friendship. Overtime as Freak and Max began to know each other, a strong bond is created. The text also shows that loss of a friendship can impact someone deeply. Having a friendship or companionship can have a major role in someone’s life, especially in a scenario like Freak the Mighty.
