Fraternities are organizations which base their beliefs on Greek culture. In fact, fraternity names are usually made up of Greek letters (Baquilid 1). Its members get to form connections with other college students. However, some people have negative impressions on these organizations because of the controversies they get involved with such as hazing. Hazing is a practice in fraternities which involves creating discomfort or pain for its new recruits. It is also an act which establishes the dominance of the leader (Gibbs 10). This has an effect on the behavior of its members such as being more receptive to different kinds of people or being secretive (Joyce 85, 88). Furthermore, one can still have issues in joining a fraternity and that is completely fine. Some of these are managing finances and dealing with negative stereotypes (Cioch, Gutierrez, Scanlan 2, 21) such as being perceived as drunkards and narcissists (Daggs 8). However, there are actually several benefits that one can get in joining a fraternity such as making connections, receiving help in academics, and developing leadership qualities. Academics is one of the most, if not the most, significant aspect of a student’s life. When Arsenio Unajan Baquilid, DM was a student at Central Mindanao University and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, he said that his fraternity brothers inspired him to always excel in academics (5). This can be achieved through collaboration within the fraternity (Gibbs 25). Since fraternity members are also college students, they should balance their schoolwork together with their other tasks. Managing tasks can be overwhelming, especially for a college student. Because of this, coordination with fellow students can be instrumental in trying to handle the tasks and challenges which one can face in their college
