Frankenstein was my favorite novel mainly because of the Creature and his development as a being since his conception. When we are given a few chapters when he tells his story to Victor from his point of view he is characterized and we get to see into his thoughts. When the creature is watching the De Lacey family and him learning everything from them, he refers to them as his only friends and protectors, and there is many pages of buildup with the creature wanting nothing but companionship. I also always make sure to do my assignments no matter how late I have to stay up which paid off in the end with the helpful bonus points on the final. My biggest struggle was usually with essays which mostly came down to just proofreading better and more times before submitting. I should have let others proofread my essays before I finished them, and also utilized extra help more often. I did use extra help for the research paper which I think paid off in the end with good criticism and insights into how to improve on the …show more content…
How did this experience change you as a student? When I began this course, I was overconfident in my writing abilities and when I submitted my first essays I did not expect to receive the grades that I did. This helped to open my eyes that my writing style was inadequate and that I need to improve in order to succeed in this class. I would improve through the use of consistent formatting and fixing missing or incorrect aspects of previous essays, such as in formatting. It would overall contribute to growing improvement over the year. What did you add to the class? I feel I added to the class discussions by answering questions and asking my own questions if I ever had any. Through the discussion boards, I think I was able to voice my opinion about a topic or propose arguments based on my research. I also think that I was able to help classmates by reading their responses and making constructive criticism if I saw anny errors in their

A first impression of Walton would be to say that he is extremely ambitious. He desires to go to the North Pole to "accomplish some great purpose". He has his own theories on what should be there, and will not rest until he has proved them. This is somewhat a 'Godlike' ambition, in that he wishes to be praised for discovering something new which will benefit everyone else in the world. The language used is also very much like Old Testament, Biblical; "Heaven shower down blessings on you". The image of Walton being 'Godlike' is enhanced by this.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Science fiction writing began in the early 1800’s as a reaction to the growth in science and technology. The genre is characterized by its intellectual excitement, high adventure, and its making of the fantastic possible. Due to the nature of science fiction, film has become an essential piece to its popularity. Science fiction films have been popular since the earliest silent clips because of the outlandish visuals and creative fictional story lines that capture an audience’s attention. Under the guise of this popular platform writers relay political, social and philosophical messages to their audience. The popular 1931 version of Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, depicts an anti-exploration and anti-intellectual philosophy. In Frankenstein there is criticisms for the immoral behavior that is involved with progresses, the natural tendency for humanity to attempt to be greater than God and the pursuit of knowledge.
Peering through the door, I saw a dark room lit by but one candle illuminating my master bent, slaving over what seemed to be a body draped in a pure white veil, while crimson liquid and dead corpses were scattered on the ground. As he moved to grab another butcher knife, I caught a glimpse of this body and the memories of my creation, the most wretched thing, came at me. The “strange multiplicity of sensations seized me” as the darkness of the night contrasted with the light from the candle next to my corpse (Shelley 68). These memories festered within me as well as the disgust of the action to yet be performed, yet I continued gazing towards my master. Step after careful step, I creeped closer to the veil and suddenly the realization dawned on me as a rush of emotions came upon me, he was trying to make a creature just like me. Will he complete this creature or will he just throw it away like he did with my beloved? He promised me one thing that a master ought to give to his creature, “to bestow on me the only benefit that [could] soften my heart” and “deliver into [my] hands a female who would accompany [me] into [my] exile” (Shelley 101).
Throughout Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, nature is a major theme that flows and effects the world she creates. Shelley utilizes this in order to influence the characters within her story. Everyone within this book is subject to the forces of nature. It holds the strength to manipulate their thoughts and emotions in both a negative and positive manner. This theme embraces the idea of romanticism which becomes an unrestrained emotional experience for the characters.
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein as a response to a contest put forth by Lord Byron and her husband, Percy Shelley. The challenge was to write a horror story. Fittingly, her novel was influenced by the discussion they were having regarding the nature of life, referring to Darwin’s theory of Evolution, and the possibility of creating a creature. As a result, she wrote about a curious minded individual, Victor Frankenstein, assembling a creature with human parts and giving it life. The creature is neglected and abandoned, eventually became a monster. Despite his essential goodness, he is hated, and so he can only hate mankind in return.
After taking this course, this has been a struggling journey. I did not find fun in this class due to the grade I have now as a result. My writing skills did not improve from high school, losing confidence in myself to create well-written, interesting papers. However, this class has given me ideas about new styles of writing. Having done these papers helped me to discern the qualifications to write a rhetorical analysis essay from a visual critique paper. Here is how my experience in College Writing went.
I improved on many aspects of my writing throughout the duration of this class, but there are still some things I need to refine. Over the course my writing skills have gotten better due to the instructor’s feedback, peer reviews, and just me learning. I enjoyed peer reviews because sometimes it is easier to relate to someone my own age. The overall structure and flow of my essays have improved, as well as the use of word choice and quotations. Throughout this course, I was able to apply critical thinking and reading skills to different texts, compose essays with appropriate content development and organization, use correct style by practicing the steps of the writing process, and reflect on my own development as a writer. However, I still need to work on demonstrating correctness, including punctuation, mechanics, and

Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
Throughout the course of the book we see gradual changes in the emotional state of Victor’s creation. With each interaction with humans, we see anything good left in the creature being shrouded by this cloak of darkness. Almost every development we see him go through is based solely on trial and error rather than naturally knowing what he should or shouldn’t do.
This course has helped me develop habits and practices that have improved my writing. I have learned to begin my writing process early to help avoid procrastination. This has allowed me to become more persistent with my writing. Being persistent has allowed me to generate my ideas by outlining and planning ahead of time before I begin drafting my thoughts and ideas so that I have a more clear and concise idea of my topic. I have also learned to ask for help. This course has allowed me to gain more confidence by asking for feedback on my work so that my final draft will be my best work. Sending drafts to my peers for feedback has been immensely helpful in regards to the way I conduct my writing. During our second paper, we were put into groups based on the topic we wanted to research and write about. Because it was a collaborative writing project, I was able to benefit from my peers based on the skills they already had so I improved by permitting my peers to teach and help me through the use of their skills that they already possessed. It has allowed me to understand ways that my peers conduct their writing and observe their habits which endorsed me to develop new habits/practices that will benefit me in the long run. These habits and practices have allowed me to improve in ways that have helped me shape who I am as a
