Many people in show business are viewed as role models in our society. Many of these people are just regular men and women that are placed high on a pedestal simply because they can sing or act, hence, becoming all the more famous. Although he was famous and popular in the entertainment world for almost four decades, Frank Sinatra was a singer and actor that had a side to him that not everyone knew. He hid behind the facade of an entirely happy, successful performer, when, in reality, he had many problems that the public was not even aware of. Some of these problems are the same that the average person faces day to day, but many went far deeper than trivial troubles. Some of these specific quandaries had to do with hidden aspects of his personal relationships, hidden connections with criminal elements, and other unknown aspects of his life.
Before even attempting to understand any of this, however, some background information on Sinatra and his family would be helpful. Sinatra came from a family of orthodox Italian heritage. His mother and father were the first of his family to move from Sicily to America and settle down in the “land of the free';. After arriving in the United States, they ended up making their home in Hoboken, New Jersey, a very poor area where people resided with those of their own ethnic background. Their history was very important to the Sinatra family, and good moral values, as well as the importance of a good education, were instilled in all their children. Frank’s parents could barely read or write; that’s why good schooling was a priority to them. Sinatra’s parents looked down on the entertainment business, and with little success, did everything to lure Frank away from his attraction to the glitz and glamour of show business (Sinatra 15).
Sinatra’s early years were spent in Hoboken, dreaming of a “better life';. Francis A. Sinatra was born on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey. Being members of the Catholic faith, he was not baptized until April 2, 1916. He faced adversity as soon as he was born, nearly dying of birth complications that left him scarred for three months after he was conceived. As, a result of this, he was often bantered by members of his class and children of his neighborhood, who called ...

...e of tribulations throughout life, dealing with his personal relationships, his involvement with criminals, and other aspects of his personal life. Whether he had moral values and good ethics is still debated, but where he is now is not for us to say. He may have had a rough life, one that was not completely honorable to God, but people are not the ones that should be judging Sinatra; that is His job. All sin is the same in the eyes of God, and everyone has the chance to repent and be baptized and forgiven of those sins. Whether or not Sinatra was a Christian, no one really knows, except for God. Sinatra did represent a strong role model to those that thought that they were too poor to become successful in show business. Much to everyone’s belief, he beat the odds and came out on top. He was in the entertainment industry for over forty years, and survived the changes that came and went with the times. He was called “The Voice';, “Chairman of the Board';, and “Ol’ Blue Eyes';. People of America dubbed him a legend, and that’s the way he will remain in the hearts and minds of those who appreciated his extraordinary talents.
Sinatra was not just a singer he was also an actor, television and radio personality, and on occasion a producer, direct, and conductor. (Pond, n.d) “Sinatra earned three Oscars, three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, ten personal Grammy's (and a total of 20 for his albums), an Emmy, a Peabody, and the Kennedy Center Honors Award in 1983. A generous charitable contributor, he was honored with the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.” (Pond, n.d) Sinatra was named by some as the top entertainer of the twentieth Century. As a person Sinatra was known as a philanthropist he would donate over a billion dollars to charities around the world through his life time. He would also contribute to civil rights for African Americans through his work with Count Basie and appearing in the movie “From Here to Eternity” which denounced rac...
Fame, flashing lights, screaming fans. Poverty, neglectful parents, no real feeling of having a home. Even though these words paint two very different pictures, they both have one thing in common, a story of resilience. In the autobiography Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It by Nick Carter and Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle, Carter and Walls both have internal and external factors that are the basis of their struggles, but their mental and emotional resilience helps them to overcome their hardships in an unfavorable environment.
Sonny is initially characterized as a nuisance with no regard for the future, others, or his own well being, Sonny’s dream is to be a musician, but his caretakers, Isabel’s family, find out that he has been ditching school to spend more time with musicians. The narrator recalls Isabel’s mother’s reaction as “This scared her and she started to scream at him and what came up, once she began...was what sacrifices they were making to give Sonny a decent home and how little he appreciated it” (13). Typically, an unwavering drive to strive for one’s dream is highly respected and appreciated, but this ideal has been perverted by Sonny’s disregard for others. Despite Sonny’s scolding, the reader’s response is more of an agreement that Sonny has gone too far in his endeavors to attempt to become a jazz musician. This, in addition to his drug addiction, characterizes Sonny as a blind dreamer.
Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong was one of the most popular musicians of his time. Upon initiating my research, I was surprised to find conflicting dates as to when he was born. Encarta Africa said he was born in 1901, 1001 things to know about African American history-1898, regular Encarta --1900, "Little Louis and the jazz band" by Angela Shelf Medearis says his date of birth is August 4, 1901. The book "Jazz Stars" by Richard Rennert states that Louis Armstrong was born in 1899, the book "Louis Armstrong" by Sam Tanenhaus says he was born on July 4, 1900. The reason why they have so many different dates is due to the fact that he probably wasn't born in a hastpital and they did not use to keep good records of black people's birthdays. So for accuracy sake, we can say he was born in the end of the 1800's, or the beginning of the 1900's.
Aretha Louise Franklin also known as the Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. She is known for being a solo singer, and also a very talented pianist. Soul, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel are genres that she sings. Throughout her career she signed with Colombia Records, along with some others, and has released many popular singles that would now be considered classical. Up until this day Aretha is still alive living at age seventy-two and has won many Grammy awards and is considered one of the most honored artist.
The first reason why they support gun control is because all types of firearms result in accidental shootings. The evidence they provide is that in the year of 2010 alone, firearms have taken the lives of 31,076 people. The next reason is that firearms cause an increase in emotional killings. Emotional killings can happen at anytime, especially if an individual owns or carries a gun at all times. This is dangerous because if one is suffering from a recent loss of a loved one, lost their job, or a disease they will release their anger on people they do not know. The final reason is that guns create an increased risk to public safety. Public safety is one of the most crucial departments that protect the society from crimes and disasters. Public safety personnel already put their lives on the line to protect and rescue civilians, and guns in the possession of unauthorized civilians will worsen the situation due to their inability to use a
When it comes to human trafficking the one thing we know is that trafficking for sexual exploitation is a huge issue all around the world. What we are not fully aware of is how big of a problem it actually is. Due to the illegality of human trafficking for the purpose of sex it is extremely difficult to truly appreciate the scope of the matter. Many differing estimates have been made to suggest the number of people that could be involved in this terrible trade, but these numbers do not explain the concealed activity of sex trafficking. They are only considered to be good estimates determined by the data collected. The prostitution industry is the key driver of sex trafficking because of its money making potential. Due to prostitution, sex trafficking is getting more and more out of hand. To address this subject buying sex should be a considered a criminalized act, and selling sex should be decriminalized. Doing this on a worldwide basis could help drive demand in the sex industry down, and could encourage women and girls in captivity to come forward without fear of persecution.
Music has been said to affect a persons brain in many ways. It is said to change someone's mood in an instant. It has also been known to influence someone's lifestyle and attitude just by listening to one song. Music is universal and there is a style for everyone no matter how different people maybe. It is an outlet for creativity and motivation. Music moves people in so many ways and can help people through anything. Almost everyone enjoys music and it is a force that brings people together. A song can reach out to anyone in any situation and the person connects with the notes and lyrics. If someone is sad they can listen to a sad song and know that someone else understands them and that they will turn out alright just like the singer. Sometimes if a person is happy they can listen to a song that expresses just how they feel and they become even happier when listening to this song. A simple melody can do so much and i began to wonder why. The human brain is a very complex and fascinating topic especially with music involved. After a bit of research i began to notice that I had no idea how music works with the brain on a physical level. So i looked into how music is able to be heard by the human ear and how the brain can process this information. It is a simple task that many take for granted however, it is amazing that the brain can change sound waves into different sounds that humans hear. Eventually the topic that fascinated my mind was how music really affects the brain physically and emotionally.
Sex trafficking is essentially systemic rape for profit. Force, fraud and coercion are used to control the victim’s behavior which may secure the appearance of consent to please the buyer (or john). Behind every transaction is violence or the threat of violence (Axtell par. 4). Just a decade ago, only a third of the countries studied by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime had legislation against human trafficking. (Darker Side, par.1) Women, children, and even men are taken from their homes, and off of the streets and are brought into a life that is almost impossible to get out of. This life is not one of choice, it is in most times by force. UNODC estimates that the total international human trafficking is a $32-billion-per-year business, and that 79% of this activity comprises sexual exploitation. As many as 2 million children a year are victims of commercial sexual exploitation, according the the U.S. State Department.-- Cynthia G. Wagner. (Darker Side, par. 4) The words prostitute, pimp, escort, and stripper tend to be way too common in the American everyday vocabulary. People use these words in a joking manner, but sex trafficking is far from a joke. Everyday, from all different countries, people are bought and sold either by force or false promises. Some are kidnapped and others come to America with dreams of a dream life and job. The buyers involved in the trade will do anything to purchase an innocent life just to sell for their own selfish profit. Many people wouldn’t think of a human body to be something you can buy in the back room of a business or even online. But those plus the streets are where people are sold most often. There are many reasons and causes for sex trafficking. The factors behind sex traffic...

His first professional gig was at the Rustic Cabin roadhouse in Englewood Cliffs, where Sinatra sang, told jokes and emceed when he wasn't waiting tables. At the request of his mother Frank enrolled in Hoboken's Stevens Institute of Technology , but he soon dropped out after 1½ semesters.

Roy Kelton Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas, the middle son of Orbie Lee Orbison (1913–1984), an oil well driller and car mechanic, and Nadine Vesta Shults (July 25, 1913 – May 28, 1992), a nurse. Both of his parents were unemployed during the Great Depression and, searching for work, moved the family to Forth Worth, when Roy was a child. All the Orbison children were afflicted with poor eyesight; Roy used thick corrective lenses from an early age. He was not confident about his appearance and began dyeing his nearly-white hair black when he was still young. He was quiet, self-effacing, and remarkably polite and obliging.
When Brittany Murphy died, when Lindsay Lohan was jailed, when Britney Spears shaved off her hair, the question was asked – what have we done to these kids? We all love rags to riches stories, but it seems that the people are almost as fond of riches to rags – or let’s say, stardom to failure. What happens when a successful young performer becomes a has-been star? The high-profile troubles of celebs like Michael Jackson and Gary Coleman reinforces the truth that nearly every kid who has worked in the entertainment industry has struggled as an adult. Although some may argue that several child stars have gone on to have stable and successful careers as adults, our contention here is that a lot of celebrities who were exposed to the limelight at a young age become scarred for life by their early success and fame and tend to compensate for the childhood they were deprived of during their later years in life.
Firstly, music has an influence on our brains. When we listen to a song, frontal lobe, and temporal lobe are affected. There are nerve cells involved in this process, take on different functions (such as receptor tone, frequency, etc.). Then, the part of the brain related to memory, imagination, and language are also affected. Sometimes we do not notice that we are mentally according to one familiar song, and recall our memories associated with the song we are listening to. That is because that song has specialized part of the brain awakens memory and our language. Knowing how music affects the brain can help we choose the right music for each moment and enjoy the wonders that music brings to us.
Albert Einstein once said, “War cannot be humanized. It can only be abolished.” While war can sometimes be used as a way to deal with problems, this comes at the cost of thousands of casualties. Bob Dylan wrote and performed “Blowin’ in the Wind” in 1962, just as antiwar conception about the US’s involvement in Vietnam began to spread. At the same time, unrest due to racial tensions simultaneously led to the Civil Rights movement. This song provides a deeper view of humanity and questions the necessity of the war. By using a variety of literary techniques — symbolism, repetition, and metaphorical language — Dylan depicts the cruelty of man, both in war and in the phenomenon of social inequality, and ultimately issues a
