Education, to me means the ability to obtain knowledge about the world and finding yourself through each learning experience. Through the media and the walls of a class room I have found myself being more educated in society and my self surrounds. Education is a chance for a brighter future and finding a better You. Frank Bruni’s opening question in his New York Times “Op-Ed” piece, “College’s Priceless Value: Higher Education, Liberal Arts and Shakespeare,” and James Baldwin’s “A Talk to Teachers” both relate to my own experiences in different ways. Bruni’s article gave me a goal on what I want to become and Baldwin’s passage gave a more thorough explanation on what I have learned and achieving an identity through the questions about society. that I like the choices I have made. Media, especially social media is becoming the main source for people to advertise, meet new people, and learn. This generation is mostly consumed in technology and social media sites.
It is easier to examine the society and learn about social norms and the economy. I have gained a lot of knowledge through sites such as Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube and learned to find out what kind of person I want to be through each of the sites. Tumblr is a blogging website that an individual can create a post for discussions and share opinions with each other. For example, I have read a lot about feminism and gender roles through Tumblr and Twitter and been informed in the issues that would have not crossed my mind before. My younger self has not thought about the topic of gender equality as much as my current self has. Scrolling online, I came across a post mentioning how a little boy wore pink boots to school and was bullied for wearing “girl shoes.” That single post frustrated me a lot because colors should not define gender. Girls and boys should be able to wear and play with whatever that please and not have to be labeled as something else. Social media educated be a lot and shaped me into the individual that is not effected by the color of someone’s skin, sexuality, race, or gender. It made me realize who I
am as a person and also who I want to become. In a class room, not many people will realize when they are being stereotypical towards feminine traits and that their teaching styles may be causing problems. Teachers unconsciously expect the male in the classroom to be more loud and less focus than the females. They usually provide more attention to the boys than girls even though for some, the attention is unwanted. Today most teachers are more educated in these issues, but growing up the majority of the ones that taught me weren’t. I hope to be a future educator and to inform the future generation about issues I have learned. Bladwin’s quote “that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated..” gave me more of an opened view on how I achieved my identity and understood more about society through my experiences. I have become more socially aware about the gender equality and treating others the same and how it would affect someone if you don’t. I believe that I improved as a person through learning and being educated about issues on social media. In Bruni’s expert, he explained how his professor, Anne Hall made himself a better citizen through her teachings. I some what can relate to Bruni because through the years of high school I had many great teachers that educated me and changed my views about certain topics. Sitting in a class room and observing my teachers being passionate about their jobs opened my eyes on a carrier in life. I want to become a teacher because I want to make a positive difference in someone’s life. To be able to stimulate the future generations’ mind and hopefully implanting import values in their head can be such an achievement. During my three years of high school, I was in the child development program where I got to teach a variety of four and five year olds. It was amazing to see how teaching lessons like recycling can change a child’s view on the world and how they treat it. Just a small lesson can make a difference on the environment. Education is such an important value to obtain. Someday, I hope be the Anne Hall for a Bruni. I think that Frank Bruni was lucky to have met a teacher that changed his life and I hope to become that teacher for someone else one day. Fredrick Douglass’s experienced on how he learned to read in write transformed himself into a more aware individual. Although through the difficult challenges of being a slave, it did not stop his hopefulness of achieving to read and write. Education gives us the opportunity to identify ourselves and become the person we want to be. “I have often wished myself a beast. I preferred the condition of the meanest reptile to my own…There was no getting rid of it” (Douglass). He knew there was no getting rid of himself because a slave is who he is but toward the end Douglass looked at the positive and used his free time to learn to read and write. Douglass and I both had an educational lesson about society in opposite ways. Through my educational experience I knew I wanted to become a teacher and educate the children’s minds. Douglass unfortunately did not have the opportunity to have a teacher. I have gain knowledge from my experience and I hope to become a person someone looks up to. “Problem-posing education bases itself on creativity and stimulates true reflections and action upon reality, thereby responding to the vocation of persons as beings only when engaged in inquiry and creative information” (Freire). Paulo Freire explain an important aspect when explaining the consequences of the banking education. He mentions that creativity is destroyed along with dialogue through banking. This limits the student’s chance to think for themselves and explore their own creativity. Freire states that if only the teacher-student dialogue can be overcome, then students won’t be not sitting down waiting for the information to be implanted in their minds for them. To resolve this conflict, the teachers should face the students with more challenges and critical thinking. Freire’s words empowered me more into the mindset of being a future educator and providing good teaching that will not only change a students’ life but also stimulate their creativity. In conclusion, education is important to me because it made me realize who I want to be as a person and also what I want to do in the future. Through the power of social media, I have learned a lot certain issues that made a major impact on my life. Today I find myself being very passionate on gender equality; everyone should be treated as an equal and that does not just include gender, but race, nationality, and sexuality. I hope to be in front of a class room one day and have an effect on someone’s life and to make sure everyone is treated the same. Bruni’s article gave me more of a motivation to obtain my goals and Baldwin helped me understand what I have learned throughout the years. Douglass and Freire gave me an insight on what I should do to improve myself as and educator and tips on things that I should avoid.
Today education has an endless amount of definitions which are correct in certain aspects of society, but most leave out the one part of education that is truly vital. That is the concept of real life experiences. The debate on what it means to be educated has been going on for centuries, yet the answer isn’t esoteric at all! The right and privilege to higher education in today’s society teeters like the scales of justice. In reading Andrew Delbanco’s, “College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be, it is apparent that Delbanco believes that the main role of college is to accommodate that needs of all students in providing opportunities to discover individual passions and dreams while furthering and enhancing the economic strength of the nation. Additionally, Delbanco also views college as more than just a time to prepare for a job in the future but a way in which students and young adults can prepare for their future lives so they are meaningful and purposeful. Even more important is the role that college will play in helping and guiding students to learn how to accept alternate point of views and the importance that differing views play in a democratic society. With that said, the issue is not the importance that higher education plays in society, but exactly who should pay the costly price tag of higher education is a raging debate in all social classes, cultures, socioeconomic groups and races.
In recent years, many have debated whether or not a college education is a necessary requirement to succeed in the field of a persons’ choice and become an outstanding person in society. On one hand, some say college is very important because one must contribute to society. The essay Three Reasons College Still Matters by Andrew Delbanco shows three main reasons that students should receive their bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, many question the point of wasting millions of dollars on four years or maybe more to fight for highly competitive jobs that one might not get. Louis Menand wrote an article based on education titled Re-Imagining Liberal Education. This article challenges the main thought many americans have after receiving a secondary education. Louis Menand better illustrates the reasons why a student should rethink receiving a post secondary education better than Andrew Delbanco’s three reasons to continue a person’s education.
In society, independent learners are those who seek to further their education to the next level. In the article, “Why We Are Looking at the ‘Value’ of College All Wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Christopher B. Nelson argues that people can’t compare economics with receiving a higher education. Individuals who look at college from an economic lens are viewing education the wrong way. Instead, individuals should look at the bigger picture which is gaining an education and taking in the knowledge. When having an education, people grow and expand their knowledge. Academic excellence is the primary desire of every parent and student. However, there are varying perceptions of the role of education in the life of and individual. According to the survey carried out on the perception of the role of education in the life of an individual, it was established that eight out of ten students were of the view that they pursued education for the purpose of economic gains. Additionally, six out of ten students viewed education as serving the purpose of broadening their view and perceptions in life. Studying a university degree is one of the biggest achievements of many individuals around the world. But, according to Mark Edmunson, a diploma in America does not mean necessarily studying and working hard. Getting a diploma in the United States implies managing with external factors that go in the opposite direction with the real purpose of education. The welcome speech that most of us listen to when we started college, is the initial prank used by the author to state the American education system is not converging in a well-shaped society. Relating events in a sarcastic way is the tone that the author uses to explain many of his arguments. Mark Edmunson uses emotional appeals to deliver an essay to the people that have attended College any time in their life or those who have been involved with the American education system.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. "The more we know the world around us, the more successful we will be." This quote, from the introduction of my high school chemistry book, was my driving force as a teenager to attend college. My expectations of college were to gain insight into a world that I had not yet discovered. I had high aspirations of receiving a good education and obtaining a good job when I graduated. But four years later when graduation day arrived, I felt unfulfilled. In evaluating my education, I realized that I learned how to get good, but not great grades. I learned how to study to make the most of my time. The focus I shared with many of my peers was not always to appreciate the information received, but rather, to value the counsel from someone else who previously took that professor's class and maybe to be lucky enough to get a hold of last semester's examinations. Basically, I acquired useful skills for any job: to follow directions, to give the boss what he or she was asking of me, and to network and gain insight from other colleagues. It was still disturbing to me that after four years of schooling, I felt I had not received the education I initially expected. Overall, college does not bring out the full academic potential of the students who invest the time and money into an education. Teachers need to set aside their biases and restructure and develop curriculum, as well as student-teacher relationships, in order to truly develop college students into freethinking, exploratory people.
Higher education is optional, but to enter a respectable career, one must continue their education in order to achieve his financial and/or personal goals. Teenagers who attend college use their extended schooling to further obtain knowledge. The primary objective of higher education is to enhance one’s abilities for his future. A student can learn from school in numerous ways, but liberal education is not a way to attract students into further and higher education. However, students can learn a lot more through experiences that have affected their personal lives. I agree with author Mike Rose’s theory that education needs are reached to obtain a higher academic level by teaching students information that can be related to their personal experiences and mentality.
Our subjectivity is heavily influenced by the amount of education that we receive. The effort that people contribute to enhancing academic excellence today is what makes learning possible and effective. Through the proper use of our academic knowledge we can construct society together. Schooling is an evident pathway toward generating social change and it is important that education is properly enforced and easily accessed by all people. Because education enables a person to grasp an understanding of his or her society, we as educated people have a crucial responsibility for contributing to social advancement.

The idea of education has been a big part of each and every culture on earth. However, as we all know, there are many questions on what it means to be educated in the form of higher education: questions we, as students, must face sooner or later. Here I am, my junior year in college. In a couple of years, I will be either prolonging my education or out in the real world trying to make a living. I must ask myself these questions: What is the purpose of my higher education? What exactly am I learning? Is the education I am receiving here at the University of Arkansas going to be good enough for a future employer? If I am educated does that mean I am trained to do only one thing? Am I one-dimensional?
