France is one of the world's richest nations. Industrialization began at the end of the 18th century. Unlike England and the rest of Europe, France failed to maintain the momentum of its early industrial start and was still an agricultural nation at the end of the 19th century. Most growth has occurred since the end of World War II. France now ranks among the world's most economically advanced nations.
A distinctive feature of the postwar French economy has been national economic development plans. The first, the Monnet plans named after Jean Monnet who thought of it. Railways were nationalized in 1937, and many other sectors of the economy, including the coal, natural gas, electricity, banking, and transportation came under state control shortly after World War II. Other major industries were nationalized in the early 1980s.
In the early 1990s, manufacturing employed between 20% and 25% of the labor force. Many French business enterprises are small to moderate in size, although the competitive business climate created by membership in the EC has forced many companies to be restructured and combined to form powerful corporations.
The leading manufacturing industries are metallurgy, mechanical and electrical engineering, chemicals, and textiles. In 1986, France ranked third in Europe in steel production, with an output of 14.8 million metric tons and second in aluminum output. These and imported metals are fabricated into a wide range of mechanical and electrical equipment marketed throughout the world. French locomotives, turbines, electronics equipment, nuclear power plants and submarines, and television systems are famous for their innovative design, as are French automobiles, such as Citroen, Peugeot, Simca, and Renault, and French aircraft, such as Mirage, Concorde, and Airbus. In 1985, France ranked fourth in the world in production of passenger cars and third in output of commercial vehicles. A wide range of chemicals, including perfumes, pharmaceuticals, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and fertilizers, are also produced. The French textile and garment industry has long been known for its high fashion, although in recent years the industry has lost many former markets to lower-priced imports from countries with lower labor costs.
Less than 1% of the labor force is engaged in mining. In 1988 coal production was 14.5 million metric tons. Most of it from two principal coalfields the Lorraine coalfield near METZ, which is an extension into France of the Saar coalfield and the Nord-Pas de Calais coalfield around Lille, which is an extension into France of Belgium's Sambre-Meuse coalfields and is similarly thin-seamed, faulted, and difficult to work.
France has had a presence in North America since long before the birth of the United States. Most American history looks back at France's presence on the continent largely from the British side of events that occurred. W. J. Eccles' France In America introduces readers to French history in North America drawing largely from the french side of events. Eccles begins the book around the year 1500 with early french exploration and the events that eventually lead to colonization. France In America details the events that took place in France and french colonies from colonial beginnings to the years following the American Revolution.
The French Revolution was a period of political upheaval that occurred in France during the latter half of the 18th century. This revolution marked an end to the system of feudalism and the monarchy in France and a rise to democracy and new Enlightenment ideas. By 1789, when the revolution began, France was in a deep financial crisis due to the debt they had obtained over many years of reckless spending and France was nearly bankrupt. These financial issues fell almost completely on the bottom social class or the Third Estate which made up a majority of the country. Because of this financial trouble the common people were heavily taxed leaving many of them in poverty. In addition to the economic issues, France also held an Estate System that led to heavy
Much of Western Europe quickly industrialized after Great Britain. If they did not, they were immediately outclassed by the British in trade and military strength. Industrialization made good use of the natural resources in a state. Some nations industrialized a while after Great Britain and were falling behind. Two of these states were Russia and Japan. These countries experienced change in governments, economic power, and social structure as a result of industrialization. Yet, these states went through their industrializations in very different ways than each other.
France wasn’t an exception, just like many other countries it changed its form of government in order to make the nation stronger and thus became more democratic. There are many reasons why the French Revolution have played a big role in the political change of France during the 1800’s. Firstly, the monarchy was abolished after the fall of the monarchy and the execution of Louis XVI has set the ground of the new more modern government. Secondly, the people started to change their positions in the government the nobility was liquidated and everybody was fighting for the power and rights. Finally, with the fall of the old dictatorial government, the people of France finally gained their human rights with the protection of the new modern
Have you ever thought about when a producer makes a movie out from a well- known novel, how many scene will actually stick to the original story? It has been a trend that the movie industries tend to dismiss many details from the original book in order to gain more rating or revenue from the movie. On the other hand, many viewer will argue or dislike the fact that the movie industries disrespect the author of the book. Recently I got the chance to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and watch the 2013 version’s movie. While the book and the film are pretty similar; there is one major different between the book itself and the movie.
As the case with most “Novel to Movie” adaptations, screenwriters for films will make minor, and sometimes drastic, adjustments to the original text in order to increase drama and to reach modern audiences. Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film interpretation of The Great Gatsby followed the 1925 classic great plot quite accurately, with minor deviations. However, Luhrmann made some notable differences to the characters and settings of The Great Gatsby in order for the story to relate to the current generation and to intensity the plot
It was not as harsh as legalism, and was more culturally accepted, unlike Daoism. Confucianism ways of thinking changed how people of the Chinese society behaved. It was expected of superior parties in China’s social hierarchy to govern by the moral norms of Confucian values. Confucius believed that “If they be led by virtue, and uniformity sought to be given them by the rules of propriety, they will have the sense of shame, and moreover will become good” (James 2). His teachings, and beliefs changed the whole dynamic of the Chinese culture, and the perspective of how they value family and political life. Out of all the solutions created for this time period, this one was the most influential to the Chinese
Compared to other countries, France’s economy is the fourth largest in the world. France is a very industrialized nation, yet it has kept some of the cultural characteristics that contribute to its old-world charm. The economy is “exceptionally diversified” (“Economic Structure”, 1). It produces everything from aircrafts to pharmaceuticals.
The automobile sector is a prime example of the increase in franchises in France, representing 11.2 percent of franchises in France in 2003, an increase of 10.2% over 2002. Out of the 34 automotive companies in France with franchises, seven of them (or 20.6 percent) have an international presence. French franchises have not only survived the repeated economic crises of recent years, but have even become economic models in their performance and success. It is apparent that everybody needs transportation, and that transportation needs to be maintained. The growing market in the automobile sector demonstrates positive signs that a facility like Jiffy Lube would be able to acquire business.
We have said that at the time when industrialization was underway that resources and capital were cheap; that being said capital refers in this situation to both money being circulated and held as well as the assets of the people themselves (Griffin). After the Enlightenment, the time period leading up to the Industrial Revolution, in both France and England their peoples had become well versed and well equipped profound thinkers that inspired inventions that shape our world even today. There is one subtle difference between the two that makes them not so evenly match; though France at the time was the center of profound and new thinking during the turn of the eighteenth century, Britain contained that same thinking and but was itself alone in possessing a sufficient number of crafters and smiths who were able to take on the entrepreneurial challenge of the ideas that arrived to them (Griffin). Highly contrasting the French who did not posses the skills needed to make their advances a reality that created a very large setback for France in advancing its
...owerful countries in the world due to the consequences of scientific advances and technological innovation. As previously mentioned, the coming together of many factors had made Britain so special that they could outride other countries for the first industrial revolution to take place. On the other hand, France also had a powerful economy and political environment because of its large geographical size, however the conservative government and churches and limited amount of coal reserves had forced France to delay their industrial development. In general, it can be summarized that previous centuries of development, abundant coal reserves, increasing population and urbanization, British innovativeness, political imperialism and intellectual climate and trading power were the main factors that contribute to the first industrial revolution to take place in Britain.
These qualities make The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald’s most influential novel. No wonder it is dubbed “The great American novel” (Yardley). From its use of characters like Daisy representing greed, Nick an observer, and Gatsby as a typical 1920’s man chasing the American dream, to its parallels to Fitzgerald’s life (Lantz) and its historical context (Caldwell). , The Great Gatsby is no doubt one of Fitzgerald’s best and most influential works. In fact, it was even adapted into films twice. The one with the most similarities and accurate representation of characters is the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. There is more than enough proof to show that one piece of work, such as The Great Gatsby, can have an impact on so many people over many years.
Confucianism is a religion derived from Daoism by the great Chinese sage Confucius (551–478 B.C.E.). It began as philosophical and ethical thought and was conceived in a society undergoing social turmoil. Confucianism is a newer religion that came to be around the same time as Buddhism. Its values and morals have had an enormous impact on the culture of many countries in Eastern Asia. All of Confucius’ teachings are recorded in the Analects, one of the four main texts of Confucianism. China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are only a handful of the countries that have been influenced by Confucianism. Personally, I come from a culture who does not practice Confucianism. However, its concepts, such as being respectful to your elders and mentoring your younger siblings were prevalent in my childhood. Studying this religion more in depth gives me a better understanding of the philosophy that my family embraces. Of the eight elements discussed in Molloy, the two that interest me the most in this context are ethics and the belief system.
... The Bank of England was nationalized in 1946, followed in 1947 by the coal mines, an industry that was unprofitable in recent years that even the owners are pleased to receive payment in compensation. The railways had recently relied heavily on public subsidy, and the gas and electricity companies had in many cases developed as municipal undertakings. They seem of proper national concern. The iron and steel industry proved more controversial, being denationalized and renationalized in subsequent years.
“The Great Gatsby” isn’t a classic novel anymore.“The Great Gatsby" is a superficially alluring film, capturing little to none of the depth created in the original novel by, Scott f. Fitzgerald. Don’t get me wrong, Baz Luhrmann’s take on “The Great Gatsby” isn’t an abomination. Every single scene is sincere and candid. However I would stop and consider what Fitzgerald, whose prose contained so much grace, controlled with such elegance, would have thought of the film: the way in which Luhrmann exerted so much energy along with time on visual effects and use of 3D, completely distracted the watcher from the book and films true core: the feelings and relationships between the characters.
