A third theory thinks that the colonists died from diseases and an epidemic. During this time smallpox was popular. Smallpox is a contagious disease spread by a virus. This disease killed over half of the native population. This theory was later forgotten because when John White returned there was nothing left not even the houses. The fourth theory that people believe is that the colonists lived with the Indians.
