Introduction
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and also the seventh largest in the solar system. The month “March” was derived from its name. Mars has been known and observed since the ancient times. It is many times called the Red Planet. It is believed that people associated Mars’ red color with bloodshed and war; thus giving the reason behind its name. People have been studying this planet for centuries and have always been intrigued by Earth’s closest celestial neighbor.
In 877, Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos were discovered by Asaph Hall. It wasn’t until 1965 though, that the first close up photos were taken when NASA sent the Mariner 4 to visit the Red Planet. These photographs were the world’s first pictures taken of a planet besides Earth. It wasn’t long after that, in 1976, that NASA sent space crafts to actually land on Mars. They sent two, the Viking 1 and 2. Next, in 1977, the first wheeled rover explored it. Many observations were made and valuable information was discovered, which only increased scientists’ curiosity about Mars and its past. Visits and studies starting in 2002 have been dedicated to analyzing the frozen water found on Mars. Strong evidence was found by the Mars Expedition Rovers that there was once liquid on its surface that probably formed the canals and canyons that have been observed. Many other studies and explorations have also been performed to determine its characteristics, interactions with the rest of the solar system, and possible life on the Red Planet.

The story of The Martian focuses on the obstacles botanist and astronaut Mark Watney must overcome to survive on the planet Mars. His adventure is filled with fictional and non-fictional elements that are most likely difficult for the normal individual to identify what is actually realistic and what is simply fantasy. After taking a closer look, this film contains a lot more realism to actual science and space travel today. This paper will closely analyze and discuss three accuracies and inaccuracies of the film in relation to the content discussed in ESS 102 lectures, labs, and assignments.
“All the facts about Mars are accurate, as well as the physics of space travel the story presents. I even calculated the various orbital paths involved in the story, which required me to write my own software to track constant-thrust trajectories,” Andy Weir on the scientific and mathematical attention to the book The Martian. There is no doubting Andy’s attention to detail. He used his dreams to create a story and backed it up with hard facts. Drew Goddard’s film adaptation, however, lacked a moral judgement in keeping the ending honest. He failed to incorporate the facts which Mark Watney clearly explained in the novel. Finally, the emotions towards the main character, Mark Watney, was somewhat clouded in the film. Moreover, the movie version of The Martian by Andy Weir is an unacceptable adaptation, because the conflicting purposes caused intense changes to the story.

The authors, Sally Ride & Tam O'Shaughnessy, wrote an expository text , The Mystery of Mars. In the text we learned about the atmosphere’s thin air, the martian soil, and the landing of the spacecrafts.

This personal account by the author, Steven Squyres, shares his story of passion toward being able to play a hand in the exploration of mars. The account shares many valuable lessons that we can learn for the scientific process and trend that appear in most scientific discovery. In my Genius Hour Project, I researched long-term colonization of Mars. I chose this topic because I have always been fascinated by other planets and space. What we cannot see has always made me wonder. I pursued my interests in this project. I set a goal to learn about Mars. This experience has made me much more knowledgeable and curious about other planets.

Venus, the second planet closest to the Sun and Earth’s closest neighbor, is known for its many wonders and harsh conditions. Venus is possibly the first planet discovered by humans and is said to have been first discovered in 17 B.C. by Babylonian astronomers. With a field as large as space is, metaphorically and literally, there is no end to all the advantages that can come of exploring the magnificent cosmos. One of the major questions we face currently is the possibility of life on other planets. “NASA's biggest ambition is the hunt for life and a habitat that can support life. Several planned or prepared missions will specifically explore the question of whether or not life exists, or once existed, elsewhere in out solar system” (Folger 3). That's exactly what we plan on using the Curiosity rover for. Mars is a very similar planet to earth in relation to size and atmosphere. Therefore it seemed like the most likely place to search for life. At the end of the 19th century, an American named Percival Lowell built himself an observatory so that it was possible for him to study Mars in intimate detail when its orbit was closest to Earth. At this time it had recently been suggested that the planet had a system of channels on the surface, present from the evaporation of flowing water. Looking through his telescope Lowell became convinced he could see a network of artificial canals. This led him to believe that there were intelligent beings on Mars who had built these canals. However, spacecraft have now visited Mars and found that there is no evidence of water at all. It is now thought that the lines he could see were the combination of Lowell's overactive imagination, and scratches on the lens of his telescope. We are now searching one of Jupiter's moons, Europa, as this seems to be the next likely place to hold life.
