According to the article what to slave is Fourth of July? Frederick Douglass is a publisher and was a well-known man who speeches about “what the Fourth of July means for America's black population”. Douglass published his speech as a booklet and was presented in Rochester, New York, on July 5, 1852. Frederick Douglass speech is one of the most powerful anti-slavery formal speeches ever delivered. Douglass dedicated his life to fight for justice for African- Americans. Frederick Douglass was once slavery but later became the leading African-American voice. In his speech, he talked about why slavery is treated differently and questioned how slavery is wrong and the Declaration of Independence is a call in action. Douglass believes that whites get away with a lot of things and that is not fair with black Americans because everyone should be treated equally and not by race. Fourth of July is the independence day and for everyone to have fun and be treated equally. In conclusion, at the end of Douglass speech, he asked the audience “What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer a day that reveals to him more than all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim” (Douglass 589). People don’t see it but I know that it changes the way African Americans see Fourth of July because they view it in different way. Americans should not be a country that is divided by race, and we should celebrate the Independence Day because it is freedom in America.
