My character is Fortunato. In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Fortunato is shown as anxious, disrespectful, and careless. Fortunato is shown to be careless when he starts coughing and doesn’t want to go back because he said that the cough will not kill him. “The cough is a mere nothing it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough” (Poe 375). This quote shows that Fortunato is careless because during this part, he is not concerned about his health when he starts coughing and it is only because he drinks all the time and doesn’t care what other people think about him. During the story, Fortunato is also shown to be anxious when he starts wondering if they are ever going ti find the Amontillado. He shows that he is anxious
Mariet Mankiev English IV Ms.Ellis September 16,2015 1. “Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever”,(Doerr 48–49) When Jutta and Werner are sitting by the radio, the Frenchman ends his forecast by saying this. Werner tries to escape the real world with Hitler’s influence by listening to the radio that he and his sister found. This quote is a reoccurring theme throughout the story.
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson. That quote is my favorite because it shows you that everyone is the same ,but there is some people that stand out more than others like my hero Fernando Valenzuela.
Being an immigrant, you have to leave your old life behind, and you have to leave all your memories behind. In the book Esperanza Rising Pam Munoz Ryan, she and her family were forced to move to California, and she had to leave all the memories from Papa and her home in Mexico behind. Although Esperanza faced many different challenges, the hardest ones were dealing with Mama having valley fever and fighting with Marta and the other strikers.
In the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, it follows a Olympian named Louie Zamperini, and his journey. Louie Zamperini was born in Olean, New York, his family later then moved to Torrance, California. Louie is: rebellious, resourceful, among many other things. Louie is who he is because of how he grew up, and the obstacles he overcame. Louie Zamperini shows rebellious and resourceful characteristic traits through his actions.
For example, Montresor expresses concern about Fortunato and says, "Come, I said, with this decision, we will go back; your health is precious. Montresor does not want Fortunato to die from anything other than his own plan of slow death by asphyxiation. Symbolism in "The Cask of Amontillado" This story by Poe has numerous examples of symbolism. For example, the manner in which Fortunato is dressed is ironic for a man with societal prominence. Fortunato is a man of stature who is “rich, respected, admired” (Baym).
Thinking too much of oneself can blind a person of their wrongdoings until it is too late. For instance, Armand found out after the departure of his wife and son that it was he that was not white while purging all things that reminded Armand of his family, “…Armand will never know that his mother… belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery” he reads from a stray letter found in his dresser from his mom to his father (Chopin). Fortunato was lustful to death for Amontillado, despite the series of warnings concerning his health. For prime example, “In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered” although Montresor guided him it was his greed that steered him to his demise (Poe). Both characters faced the harsh reality that their narcissistic ways ultimately ended with the presence of
Edgar Allan Poe published in The Cask of Amontillado in 1846. He is known for his gothic and dark writing style. In The Cask of Amontillado, the main character Montresor seeks revenge on Fortunato. The story follows Montresor’s plan for revenge and ends with the murder of Fortunato. Montresor’s actions are bizarre and uncalled for, especially after he never explains the motive for the murder. After analyzing Montresor’s actions and examining his mental state, and the crime he committed, I have concluded that he suffered from Antisocial Personality Disorder. “A personality disorder that is characterized by antisocial behavior exhibiting pervasive disregard for and violation of the rights, feelings, and safety of others starting in childhood
Paragraph 2: Another important factor that made survival possible for salva is perseverance. In chapter 9 on page 52 it says, “After only a few minutes Salva had to kick off the flapping shreds and continue barefoot.” That shows perseverance because despite the fact that the sand was scorching. Salva didn’t give up and instead of complaining through the hike across the desert. He endured his pain from the thorns stabbing his feet and stubbing his bare toe on the rock which resulted in his whole toenail coming off. On top of that, the hardest thing Salva had ever done, was taking tiny sips when his body sobbed for huge gulps of thirst- quenching water.
“The Cask of Amontillado” starts out with the narrator, later discovered to be Montresor, positioning himself as a victim of Fortunato. In the opening line, he states, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could” (714). Instantaneously one feels sympathetic towards a person that has withstood a thousand inflictions. Montresor goes on to tell a parable of sorts about vengeance, and “when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong” (715) he has lost. In this instance Poe has set Montresor apart from being at the least an unsuspecting
“Sobeknefru” is about a women forced to be a farrell because there were no more boys.”Sobeknefru” shows that any women can do anything. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is about a kid half blooded and gets blamed for stealing something and he has to get it back. The Lightning thief shows that anyone can be a hero. Ancient cultures continue to shape our world. These stories from Greece and Ancient prove that it changed this world because anyone can be anything.
To begin, one can evaluate the character of Chamberlain Ventresca. First, he is a calm and peaceful man. To illustrate, Ventresca maintains his composure when it is conveyed to him that an explosive antimatter specimen has been embedded inside Vatican City. The Chamberlain is the temporary Pope of the Vatican, and so bears full responsibility for its protection. Yet, when a powerful explosive device threatens security, Ventresca remains cool in his head. As stated in the novel, “Calm and efficient. He listened to her request, bewildered” (Brown 160). The quote shapes that Ventresca fully understands the situation. He realizes that panicking will only deteriorate the situation further and set fear into others’ minds. Indeed, Ventresca knows it is apropos
The Holocaust is a time in history that is well know for millions of Jews and other people being sent to concentration camps to be killed by people thought as evil. Many families were murderer in concentration camps including the Franks and The Van Daans. Anne Frank was Jewish along with her family but she said: “In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart.” Anne’s family has had many troubles from not only the Nazis but from the people in hiding with them. From reading the play based on Anne’s real diary, I would have to disagree with this quote. I think this way because of when Mr. Van Daan constantly took things to get the things that he wanted like when he stole the bread or sold his wife’s sentimental coat to get cigarettes. Since there are two sides in an argument, someone might disagree with me based on Anne’s actions when she gave everyone gifts
He first mentions alcohol when the narrator confesses that the disease that torments him is alcohol (2). At this point, it is clear that the cause of the narrator’s change in temper is because of the alcohol when, “[o]ne night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town, [he] fancied that the cat avoided [his] presence. [he] seized him” (2). The thoughts of harm were alway in the narrator’s mind, but after intoxication, he “knew [him]self no longer” (2). Especially as the narrator’s mental state deteriorates, his interactions towards his wife and cat show the strain of suppressing his instincts. Including alcohol as a mental impairment in this story does not relate to the alcohol itself, but supplies a symbol of vulnerability in humans that can open up dark parts of a person’s soul. Poe suggests that alcohol plays a role in the narrator’s routine consistently throughout the story, and it leads to the rash decisions he later
In Hemingway’s The old man and the sea, Santiago was a “code hero” who exemplified the admirable quality of perseverance through his actions. Santiago was an example of perseverance when he fights the marlin for three days. Santiago went out to the sea as far as he could to catch a big fish. On his first day, he adjusts the line on his fishing pole so everything is perfect. Then, he sees a dolphin and a bird compete for food. Next, Santiago feels something pulling on the line, and he knows it is a big fish. The fish starts to pull the boat against the current. Santiago wishes the boy was with him to help him and so he can teach him how to catch a fish. On the first night, the marlin pulls the boat very far and Santiago can’t see land
"Enough," he said; "the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough." "True-true," I replied. This is one of the most prominent uses of suspense in the story because Poe using his eerie symbolism and his references to sickness has already revealed that Fortunato will die by the end of the story. And dialogue like this just adds more suspense to the situation and wants to make you continue
