I think public officials should never lie and that they should always tell real facts. It is important to consider the context for sharing “truths”, there may be times when sharing the truth or withholding it, may be a matter of legal affairs. But that does not mean that they have a special place that allows to behave in a way that is unethical. Unfortunately, what is ethical or unethical seems to be have been forgotten by some people in government. The case of the Fort Lee bridge lane closure scandal comes to mind.

What is honor? Honor coins an individual’s nature. A principle that exists on the purpose of perception, a martyr willing to conform and accomplish. Honor can be defined by how one holds them in the public eye. Others may say that honor is how you live your life when none can see your actions. However defined honor can play major roles in how a person will act in a given situation. Those in the field of politics, government and public corporations have an added obligation to the society to be honest. The elected representatives in the federal government or the state government have a tremendous burden to maintain a very high standard of character and to honor that. When millions of citizens have placed their trust in them for running the government, it is very important for them not to deceive the American people. The universal claim is that all presidents lie. The fact of the matter is that it is so deeply embedded into our society we have almost come to accept it.
Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.

Reward comes for those at the top whose honor does not diminish, while a false or fleeting honor of a lesser mortal causes destruction. Exploring and discussing how to act honorably toward each other is a place to start.The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. How can you be a person of integrity? First, figure out what integrity (honor) is. My mother used to say to treat others the way you wanted to be treated. Does anyone do that these days? Well, I know that I don't want to be cut off in traffic, or yelled at, or bumped into rudely at the grocery store, or left picking up garbage all over my yard from the street. So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
In ethics values form the basis for understanding. Values that are needed in all law enforcement employees are honesty, kindness, hard work, empathy, integrity, compassion, bravery, and justice. All of these values will help police officers to make the right decisions in their day to day work. Values and ethics are placed as the most important part of a police officer’s work from the very first days of their police academy ("Mission, Values, & Law Enforcement Code of Ethics", 2014). As mentioned earlier they first must agree to uphold the oath of office. The oath of office lays the groundwork for all officers in instilling ethical behavior. The code of ethics requires that all officers are not only prepared to enforce the law but also to follow it. Officers should be examples to all of society and they should always demonstrate the right way to conduct yourself, rather than to act entitled because they do have a badge. An officer’s badge should be a symbol of the public trust and not a symbol of a person that is entitled to
In conclusion, lying in politics is hard to define because it has to do with point of view and exposure to correct information. Politicians should try to be as truthful as possible to make our society run better and that will make people have more trust in our government. Subjects when it comes to polities should be researched and understood before a citizen votes for or against it. This will help dilute the false information if given by a politician or media.
