If you ask someone who is not from America what an Americans three favorite things are, you will most likely hear Freedom, Cheeseburgers and most importantly football. Coming from a sport whose biggest stage, the super bowl is viewed by over 115 million viewers worldwide and whose annual revenue totals over 17 billion dollars between the Professional and collegiate level (which is more than the NHL, Premier League, and NBA combined), it is safe to say that the sport of Football plays an important role in the United States. Despite the recent studies and research on the negative effects and injuries that can occur to players bodies in football sustained in football, people are still flocking to watch and play it from the youth levels all the …show more content…
way up to the professional levels. Aside from its mass popularity and revenue generation in the United States, football is the ultimate sport because it is enjoyable to play, teaches many important life lessons and has established its own unique culture. From my personal experience I can say that it is both an enjoyable and fun sport to play. In no other sport (except for boxing) are you allowed to hit somebody as hard as you can and not be penalized for it. I believe this is what draws so many people to the game is the big hits, the big tough guys and the seemingly superhuman abilities that they possess on the field. I have played the game six years now competitively at the recreational, high school and now collegiate level and it seems that the more I play it and am able to learn about it the more fun I am able to have doing it. Football in my opinion is the ultimate team sport because if one person out of the 11 messes up or does bad on a play the whole play is screwed up so in football especially the team element is emphasized heavily and is crucial to a team's success when it comes to winning a game. If you are someone who feels they have a lot of pent up energy and you have some athletic ability, football might be the perfect sport for you. A unique thing about football is that unlike sports like soccer where you almost have to be skinny and fast to play, you can be a big and slow person and be a dominant force for your team, these kind of players are called lineman and it is their job to protect their teammate from getting hit. Whereas football does not discriminate by size if you can play or not, it does take a special kind of individual to excel and continue to play the game. In order to play the game of football you must be very mentally tough because you will get knocked down and if you are not mentally strong enough to pick yourself up when you get knocked down, the game of football is probably not for you. The game of football has not only taught me many important life lessons but it has also taught me about myself and what my potential is. When playing the game of football at times you will get knocked down as I was referring to earlier in my paper, but you can also say the same thing about life, it will knock you down and you will feel like giving up but it is all about how you respond to that adversity and football is a great sport to be able to learn that lesson in. Perhaps Rocky Balboa says it best “It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” I owe great thanks to this game for what it has been able to bring out of me, a specific example of this was during my senior year I had to change positions because it would benefit the team. I had always been a cornerback (because of my short and small stature) but the coaches saw that it would help the team more if I stepped up and played linebacker. I was originally scared to play this position because that meant I would have to be going up against guys who were literally twice my size and I figured I would get crushed. But I worked up enough courage to play linebacker for the whole season and I excelled at it. Needless to say, this taught me that you should always push yourself to your limits because you never know what you can do or accomplish until you try it, this is the most important lesson this game has taught me. The game of football is unique to all other sports because it has its own unique culture around the game that no other sport resembles.
If you go to almost any college campus on a saturday in the fall you will see something extraordinary, thousands of people gathering in one stadium to see a football game. But the events and festivities do not just stop there, typically you will see many people tailgating and having cookouts with their friends decked out in their teams memorabilia and colors all around the stadium. I find this to be cool especially from a player’s perspective because to me that shows how dedicated they are to their team and they feel as if they are still a part of the game. Also if you ever go to a football game you will notice several things...Big flood lights overlooking the stadium, bands playing their music in the background, cheerleaders dancing and cheering their cheers, the echo of the loud PA speakers and last but not least the roar of the crowd. No other sport has the same combination of these and I think all of those different elements contribute to what makes the game so exciting and fun to be at, it is all because of the atmosphere. Because football games are only played once a week it gives each game that is played a little bit more importance thus making each moment a little more
exciting. My hope is that whether you know a lot about football, grew up around it or know nothing at all about it is that you will be able to inform yourself about the impact that football has on the United States of America. Even if you do not particularly like the game of football itself it offers many different positive experiences such as socializing with friends, free food at tailgates and being a part of something that is ever growing. I encourage everyone to go to a game and experience for themselves and develop their own opinion of the game. I would love for this game to have the same impact on someone’s life that it did on mine because I truly believe that I would not be where I am today if it were not for this beautiful game.
Despite a dominant 40-10 win against the San Fransisco 49ers, it is not all good news for the Dallas Cowboys looking back on Sunday evening’s showing. The Dallas Cowboy’s lost All-Pro kicker, Dan Bailey, mid game, due to a groin strain in his kicking leg. It was announced this morning that Bailey could be out for several weeks while recovering.
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
“Maybe I´m stupid or whatever, but to me if I got a concussion, if I could see straight and carry a football, then I´m not telling anybody”, Ricky Williams, NFL Football player. The argument about whether kids should play football or not is an important topic to argue. People need to understand that the concussions and other injuries are more serious with young kids. The problem is that many people think that it could be stopped by not allowing kids to play at all. Although parents can reduce risk of injury by not allowing their kids to play football, parents should let their children play football because it lets kids follow their dreams, it helps kids become more mature and independant, and if kids use proper technique they can reduce injuries.
It has become less and less arguable that the American football is one of the most violent sports there is to play and it is by far the most violent out of the popular sports played today. When we speak of physical culture, our understanding is contextually bound. In other words, physical culture to one person may not be the same as the next, given different situations. This is why we have ongoing debates on which activities should be classified as a “sport” and which ones shouldn’t. However, it seems pretty unanimous that American football fits the stereotypical context of physical culture since the active body is constantly used in a way beyond average human ability. This all ties into the push of physical culture in American football because it is its largest selling point to the fans. Most fans come to the games and watch it on television for the bone chilling tackles and electrifying runs. If you were to turn on Sports Center during football season, the most played highlights of each game will be the biggest hits and longest runs. Further using the physical culture of football to draw more viewers, in hopes of them witnessing what will be a “top ten play” the following day. When I think of this as a large selling point, three examples come to
Everyone feels the need to belong. Some people find the answer to fulfill that need in sports. In the United States, the go-to sport is football. Following one’s hometown team or childhood NFL team through the regular season, playoffs, and hopefully, the Super Bowl has become a staple for today’s culture. Whether or not their favorite team makes it to the big Super Bowl game, they still find themselves cheering on one of the teams competing. T...
In the modern day United States the sport American football has become not only entertainment but also a tradition whether it’s watching the BCS college championship or watching the super bowl with the family. The sport of American football is unique to the United States and has grown and became iconic over the years and has become a part of many Americans lives. American Football was made in 1869 and was modeled after the sport of rugby. They took the basics of rugby and changed it to make it fit better for them. The game has changed over the years but it also affected many Americans as the tradition of Monday Night football has begun. The game has had problems with the United States government as it was said to be too dangerous to play, this lead to an upgrade in the equipment and they tried very hard to make the equipment well ensuring player safety throughout the sport.
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Should kids play football? In recent years parents and grandparents are worrying more and more every day about letting their children or grandchildren play football now than in the past. Roughly four times the number of young football players died from head and spine injuries from 1965 to 1974 compared to 2005-2014, according to previous reports from the University of North Carolina. After careful research on the effects of concussions, it is clear that children should just play and enjoy sports because football is a great way to improve concentration, become better conditioned and gain strength, and improves health overall. There are many benefits of playing with concentration being towards the top of the list.
Soccer the most popular sport in the world, since is the sport with more active players with around 270 million athletes. By having registered so many players, it’s not surprising that this sport has more fans than any other sport worldwide. Every team looks for a player that moves the ball, and that creates plays to score. This means a person that pass the ball through the entire game. To pass the ball in a proper way is one of the main skills a player needs to play soccer. Passing the ball, keeps the game going. Without being able to pass the ball accurately to your teammates, more than likely your team won’t be able to score a goal. The key for passing is to keep things simple. This means passing the ball to your nearest teammate that is not marked by an opponent.
Approximately 13 months ago, Colin Kaepernick, who played quarterback for the 49ers, started doing something that seemed totally harmless, but ended up causing total chaos. He started kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. He said, ““I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”. Since then, many other players have started following his example and started kneeling, locking arms with their teammates, and skipping the anthem all together. This has created a huge buzz in social media. With mixed feelings about the whole thing, many people have started arguing. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has even gotten involved, tweeting, “The NFL has decided that it will not force players to stand for the playing of our National
One of the most storied franchises in all of professional sports the Pittsburgh Steelers have put this steel town on the map as the city of champions. “The Chief” Art Rooney a southwestern Pennsylvania native founded the Steelers in 1933. However, the team would be named “Pirates” at first and would be the 10th team to join the NFL.
College football is the most exciting, and most watched sport in American society today. Most Americans in the nation have a favorite college football team that they root for. In some households, the house is divided because both parents have their own separate team that they root for. An example of this would be in the state of Alabama where there are two big teams like the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Both of these teams are in Alabama and are much hated rivals. This could cause a problem between a married couple, with one being an Auburn fan and the other being an Alabama fan. Because football is the biggest sport in America, it tends to bring in a ton of revenue. Although the college players are the main reason for all the fans coming to the game, the players get zero percent of the money that is made from the games and promotions. The NCAA has specific rules that say that the players cannot take any money from anyone who offers it, or the action will result in a permanent suspension from college football. Many fans believe this rule should be altered, so that the NCAA should create a trust
Football has been around for decades, and in that time changes have been made to make the game safer, but still captivating. The recent controversies about concussions have brought up some debates about the safety, and future of football.
There are many critics that say football at the high school level is too dangerous. For example, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has published an article that’s cited statistics regarding student player injuries. If a high school athlete is going to undertake the risk of playing football, he should know the possible injuries that he may possibly face while playing football.
American Football is not merely a sport, its a culture. In the south football is in some ways a lifestyle. From the rivalries to the championships its truly one of the most exciting sports to have ever been created. This is why I love it so much, it is much more than just a game it has a much deeper meaning to it. From the outside looking in, many people do not fully realize the impact it has on each and every player throughout its history. Football has made me who I am today.
