Football In The Big Time By Tim Green

Fall, football and lots of fun. I love football as does Troy White the star quarterback of the book I choose The Big Time, written by Tim Green. What we learn from football goes far more than plays and the championships, its the risk and chances we take in life that occur on the field in in real life. Its how we react with those chances and risks we take in life and on the field. Taking the risk as a quarterback is a question we have to ask of every quarterback and along with it comes the chance - whose ready?

Football has been played for hundreds of years. We all love to watch football, I am lucky enough to be able to play football and have many of the same dreams as Troy. Troy the twelve year old boy in the book is a stud, he is the star quarterback. Dreaming to play at his favorite college and get it paid for is a plus for him as is a career in the NFL. He’d love to help support his mother who is the only support in his family, maybe buy her a car someday and better yet a house. He has never met his father, although he thinks and dreams of the fun times he'd have with his father talking about the “game” and hunting and maybe fishing. For twelve years his father had never come around until one day a Drew came knocking on the door.

Drew and Troy begin to know each other and actually enjoy each other, but Troy can feel his mother is a but uneasy about the situation.

Troy can tell that his dad - Drew isn’t the nice father he had always wanted. He finds out he must be in trouble with the law and has many people who he is trying to avoid and hide from. The Federal Bureau of Investigation notices that Drew is hanging around with this new kid and offer to help Troy get into college if he can help them go against his

father.

This is a dangerous time and is Troy willing to take the risk associated with this new relationship with his father. Being in the middle of the field knowing what call to make to get his team to the championship was similar to the changes he was asked to take against his father. Risks are taken and with most risk we all that includes exposure to some type of danger. A star quarterback knows he has to stay out of danger.

I love taking chances, if you don’t take chances in life how will you ever know if it will work. In my own life I took the chance of loosing my starting position in football. I decided to choose a different position on the line, thank god this past year it worked to my advantage. If i didn’t take the chance and put the risk out there i may have had an unhappy season and wouldn’t learn to do something more challenging. I feel like Troy does many times in this novel, should he step up and take the next step or sit back and watch the show. Tim Green does a great job in this novel by letting Troy express his opinion and feelings. Sometimes letting go is the best way to express your feelings.

How should Troy or myself prepare for the big game, Green offers many tips. Eating lightly, getting sleep, staying calm and having a routine. Will this alway mean a “W” or a win for the team, probably not every time, but you don’t need a “W” every time for it to be considered a win. Troy is taught this throughout the season and even with the help of his worthless dad.

There will not be glory every time we step out onto the field or into the classroom. Putting the fun in the work is always a plus and will usually end in glorified success. Maybe even get a little luck along the way. You have to always remember someone or somebody is working harder than you. If you fail to follow the dream or take the chance or risk you will never score.
