Many people waste food because they do not think it is edible or it is not the freshed. Stores waste a lot of food each year.The problem related to food waste in stores is they throw away food due to sell by dates, freshness and they overstock their shelves to look full. Store food waste is a problem because they throw away perfectly good food because of sell by dates. The majority of people waste food on a daily basis. In fact, in the U.S. alone there is an estimate that over half of the food produced goes uneaten; meanwhile there are people who are in need of food, and it ultimately goes to waste (Dockterman). For example, in his essay, “On Dumpster Diving,” author Lars Eighner writes about his experiences of dumpster diving with his pet dog, during his years of homelessness. According to Eighner, much of the food and materials he came across in the dumpsters were in usable shape, and many items were new. Clearly there needs to be a change in American food waste, in current and, hopefully not so much in, future generations.
However, he says from time to time he would able to find somewhat reasonable amount of beef in good condition. Even though he is very careful in his collection of foods, he is still get stomach age once a month. Therefore, he also stays away from ethnic foods. He mentions the area where he loitered has a lot of rich college students’ dome. These students throw out a lot of goods including good foods such as half a jar of peanut butter, yogurt, cheese, sour cream and canned goods. When I first heard about dumpster diving for food, it seemed a bit gross and thought of getting food from dumpsters is not the most sanitary idea. So I wondered, “is all the food in the dumpster rotten or expired?”. Many individuals believe the food in the dumpster is not edible. I also was one of them but I changed my mind after I visited Trader Joe’s trash bins.
