DELOITTE’S REPORT ON ‘THE ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF MELBOURNE’S FOODBOWL
Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with the population of 4.6 million people. It is one of the most food productive area in Victoria. As the size of Melbourne has grown, so does the demand for food. Due to the growth of urbanization, its productive land is also decreasing which is creating shortage of food supply in the region.

As of 2011, around 12,600 people were employed mainly working in agricultural industries. Among them, 9200 people were working on farm. The population of Melbourne is expected to grow over 7 million until the year 2050.This will result in scarcity in food supply as land will be used more for shelter purpose rather than agricultural purpose. This contribution of agriculture helped to strengthen the economic condition of Melbourne. Not only this, it also provided a lot of job opportunities the people living in Melbourne that helped to run their lives smoothly. Talking about the contribution of foodbowl only in the region’s economy, $957 million was generated by providing employment to 7,687 people on FTE basis. $742 million per was it’s indirect contribution and $756 million by food produced within foodbowl. The economy of Victoria mainly depends on production of vegetables. So, by retaining the land for agricultural purposes, the living standard of the people living in the rural areas will also improve. The food and vegetables produced within the region are in high demand as they are healthier than those which are imported. With the increase in demand of locally grown food, this has motivated the workers working in the foodbowl to produce more food with good quality. Not only foodbowl is one of the major sources of regional economy, it has also helped to create a sustainable and equal urbanization throughout the region. American society has grown so accustomed to receiving their food right away and in large quantities. Only in the past few decades has factory farming come into existence that has made consuming food a non guilt-free action. What originally was a hamburger with slaughtered cow meat is now slaughtered cow meat that’s filled with harmful chemicals. Not only that, the corn that that cow was fed with is also filled with chemicals to make them grow at a faster rate to get that hamburger on a dinner plate as quickly as possible. Bryan Walsh, a staff writer for Time Magazine specializing in environmental issues discusses in his article “America’s Food Crisis” how our food is not only bad for us but dangerous as well. The word dangerous could apply to many different things though. Our food is dangerous to the consumer, the workers and farmers, the animals and the environment. Walsh gives examples of each of these in his article that leads back to the main point of how dangerous the food we are consuming every day really is. He goes into detail on each of them but focuses his information on the consumer.
The Australia Dietary Guidelines gives advice for healthy eating and wellbeing. The Australian Dietary Guidelines informs you about the amount of health food that you should be consuming. The Australian Dietary Guidelines are there to help people reduce the risk of food related conditions such as diabetes type two, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity.
The Australian wine industry exports approximately 750 million litres a year valued at approximately $2.8 billion a year. In 2011 it was the fourth largest exporter in the world. The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Australian national state and local economies though production, employment, exporting and tourism. If you are the average American, the answer will most likely be “in a couple of hours”; however, there is a good chance that you might also be one of the fifty million Americans that would most likely answer “I don’t know… whenever I can afford it, I guess.” Roughly every one in six Americans would have some sort of response like the one presented because that is how many are considered food insecure. This is obviously one of the most important social problems afflicting America in modern times, but what can be done about it? The United States Department of Agriculture defines food unsecurity as the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food, is limited or uncertain for a household. Food insecurity also does not always mean that the household has nothing to eat. More simply stated it is the struggle to provide nutritional food for ones family and/or self. The people that suffer from food insecurity are not all living below the poverty line. In 2012 49.0 million people were considered food insecure in the United States of those 46.5 million were in poverty (Hunger & Poverty Statistics, 2012). For some individual’s food insecurity is only a temporary situation for others it maybe for extended period. Food insecurity due temporary situation such as unemployment, divorce, major medical or illness can be become more long term. The vast majority of these are families with children.

Over the years many have studied about the exisene of “Food deserts”. The major concern about food deserets is that there may be insuffienct quanity and quality of food or systematically higher food prices in certain geographic areas. For example, Lewis, Sloane, et al. (2005) find that there are fewer healthy restaurant options in poor Los Angeles neighborhoods when compared to more affluent Los Angeles neighborhoods. Powell, Slater, et al. (2007), using national data, find that poor and minority neighborhoods have fewer chain supermarkets than do more affluent, whiter neighborhoods. Rose and Richards (2004) find that food stamp recipients who live closer to supermarkets consume more fruit and vegetables. White (2007) reviews numerous studies that examine whether food deserts exist in the United Kingdom (UK).
In land area, Australia is the sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is one of the world’s most urbanized countries, with about 70 per cent of the population living in the 10 largest cities. Most of the population is concentrated along the eastern seaboard and the southeastern corner of the continent.
Interstate migration of 75,000 persons attributed to QLD highest growth in population in 2004-05 (ABS, 2006). The population of Brisbane has shown an increase of 2.3% from November 2005 to October 2006. Therefore this population increase is of benefit to Hanndia Pest Control Services, as the population arrives many more properties will be built and rented out to accommodate the growing demand for accommodation, and the need for ongoing protection from white ant infestation.
In order for us to maintain our lives, we need to consume food to supply nutrient-needs for our bodies. As the global population increased, the demand for food also increased. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. On other hand, in developed and developing countries, people are overfed and suffering from obesity. In addition, the current methods of industrial farming destroy the environment. These problems raised a question to our global food system. Will it be able to sustain our increasing global population and the earth? With this question in my mind, I decided to investigate the sustainability of our current global food system.

As agriculture has become more intensive, farmers have become capable of producing higher yields using less labour and less land. Growth of the agriculture has not, however, been an unmixed blessing. It, like every other thing, has its pros and cons. Topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, continued neglect of the living and working conditions for farm labourers, increasing costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. These are the cons of the new improved agriculture.

One of the most complex issues in the world today concerns human population. The number of people living off the earth’s resources and stressing its ecosystem has doubled in just forty years. In 1960 there were 3 billion of us; today there are 6 billion. We have no idea what maximum number of people the earth will support. Therefore, the very first question that comes into people’s mind is that are there enough food for all of us in the future? There is no answer for that. Food shortage has become a serious problem among many countries around the world. There are many different reasons why people are starving all over the world. The lack of economic justice and water shortages are just merely two examples out of them all.
