Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with the population of 4.6 million people. It is one of the most food productive area in Victoria. As the size of Melbourne has grown, so does the demand for food. Due to the growth of urbanization, its productive land is also decreasing which is creating shortage of food supply in the region.

As of 2011, around 12,600 people were employed mainly working in agricultural industries. Among them, 9200 people were working on farm. The population of Melbourne is expected to grow over 7 million until the year 2050.This will result in scarcity in food supply as land will be used more for shelter purpose rather than agricultural purpose. This contribution of agriculture helped to strengthen the economic condition of Melbourne. Not only this, it also provided a lot of job opportunities the people living in Melbourne that helped to run their lives smoothly. Talking about the contribution of foodbowl only in the region’s economy, $957 million was generated by providing employment to 7,687 people on FTE basis. $742 million per was it’s indirect contribution and $756 million by food produced within foodbowl. The economy of Victoria mainly depends on production of vegetables. So, by retaining the land for agricultural purposes, the living standard of the people living in the rural areas will also improve. The food and vegetables produced within the region are in high demand as they are healthier than those which are imported. With the increase in demand of locally grown food, this has motivated the workers working in the foodbowl to produce more food with good quality. Not only foodbowl is one of the major sources of regional economy, it has also helped to create a sustainable and equal urbanization throughout the region.
