Environmental Essay Both videos Food Inc. and Fresh were very interesting in fact I learned a lot from them, because they taught me many things. Some of the things I learned are how healthy the food I eat is, the process meat goes while being purified, how are chickens treated, and the agriculture of the farmers life. The movie food Inc. described and showed a lot on how chickens are treated, and what the farmers has to go through to raise them healthy and strong for the society to eat. One fact on how chickens are treated than how they used to be is, “farmers wait forty-nine days to hatch, they feed them a lot for them to grow twice as big, and for them to have bigger breast as well”(Food Inc.).A lot people think oh well I’m eating chicken
Food Inc. is a documentary displaying the United States food industry in a negative light by revealing the inhumane, eye opening, worst case scenario processes of commercial farming for large corporate food manufacturing companies. Food Inc. discusses, at length, the changes that society and the audience at home can make to their grocery shopping habits to enable a more sustainable future for all involved.
Documentary films have become very popular in the last few years, with the success of Michael Moore’s films fueling interest in learning while being entertained. Two filmmakers have benefited from this new interest in the non-fiction film movement, including directors Morgan Spurlock and Lee Fulkerson. The two filmmakers both made documentaries regarding healthy eating, or the lack thereof, in North America. Spurlock’s film, Super Size Me, was about a healthy man who wanted to see what would happen to his body if he ate nothing but items from McDonalds for an entire month. On the other hand, Fulkerson’s Forks Over Knives is about a man on a quest to improve his health by consuming a plant and whole food based diet.
I really enjoyed this video. It's crazy the amount of informaton that gets packed into a three minute video. I think the cartoon and music that accompanies it helps because you're being entertained as well as informed. I think it's easier for me to remember a fun fact from the video versus reading a whole chapter from a book.
The information is presented in an efficient manner as it correlates and appeals with viewers existing knowledge and lifestyle. The documentary begins with a lethargic women who appears to lack motivation due to following an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. This example, that continues throughout the whole documentary,
One subject that came up in this documentary was that of Broiler Chicken houses. Food.Inc made it seem as if these houses were cruel, and were bad for the chickens. The one chicken house owner they did interview, made it seem as if this job were terrible and that the regulations that they had were causing harm to the chickens. When they videoed them taking the chickens away to get processed, they made it seem as if they were abusing the chickens.
Chickens have to endure suffering that no living thing should have to go through. The egg laying chickens have to be forced into tiny cages without enough room to stretch their wings. Up to 8 hens are crammed in to a cage that is the size of a folded newspaper, about 11"-14". Stress from the confinement leads to severe feather loss so the chicken will be almost completely bald in the cold cages. When the chickens are of egg-laying age, there beaks are cut off without any pain killers to ease the pain, they do this so the chickens don’t break their own eggs and eat them because the chickens are hungry.
The things I have learned from this class are very informative. The Diet Analysis project has taught me a lot about my eating habits and has gotten me to change them in order to live a healthier lifestyle. Probably the biggest change I will make after completing this project is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables will give me a lot of fiber in my diet. I will have to limit my fat intake, especially saturated fats from animals. I plan to pass the information I have learned in this course to friends and family to hopefully keep them aware that they should also watch what they eat.
The chicken is no longer simply viewed as food and is instead seen as someone or something that cares about the family due to her new role as a mother. This is depicted through the words of the daughter as she states, “Mama, Mama, don’t kill the chicken anymore, she laid an egg! She cares about us!” (129). Thus, it can be interpreted
The way that our society has been able to produce food has changed in the last fifty years that the several thousand years beforehand. Robert Kenner addresses problems of our society’s food system and how there is only a handful of large corporations that have basically taken over the food system in the United States in the film Food, Inc. Large businesses have been able to significantly produce vast amounts of food and set low prices for consumers, usually because of government subsidies, which results in enormous profit and greater control of the food supply sources. This leads to negative health, safety, and economic consequences. This documentary examines the exercises of the few large food corporations from the start of production
Poultry industry is a large an important part of the food sector. Poultry industry include the production of eggs, chicken turkey meats. Poultry is one of the most important source of protein for mankind. Production of chicken meat had been increasing due to the proposed nutritional value of chicken as compare to other type of meats. Poultry meat are considerably cheaper compare to other type meat as well. The increased in poultry consumption can be accredited to the big poultry company for their innovation in supplying different type of poultry products. For example chicken nuggets, chicken sausages and etc. The raise of popular fast food restaurant that serve chicken such as KFC also contributed to the ever increasing demand for poultry meat. Table below summarize the production and
One reason most have them is for the eggs, chickens produce about 1 egg a day depending on the breed. When you raise your own chickens you control what they eat and they give you wonderful eggs in return. Most people think it is the same as a egg we buy at the market, well it isn’t. If you have ever had a farm fresh egg you will not want to buy store eggs again. The eggs that you buy at the market are from farms, but mass production farmers. These poor chickens are bred just to provide eggs; they usually are in a box/cage or a room with many, many other chickens. Feed only a mix that is usually the cheapest, no bugs, no grass. I mean the eggs are “normal”. They get shipped to a warehouse where they sit and wait to be shipped to markets all over. They have a expiration date because FDA requires it. Fresh eggs can sit on the counter without refrigeration for weeks, as long as they are not fertilized. A chicken that has access to a run with bugs, worms, grass, treats they get a little extra, so they produce an egg that has a deep yellow/orange yolk. It is so much tastier than a store bought egg. Chickens can also be considered a pet, me I picture myself with a cup of tea sitting outside near my garden with the hens roaming around. Like I would my dogs or cats, they will come up to you; kids can even pick them up

This book is a life changing book. It was inspirational, informative and gave you insight about the things we do not know about the food we eat. The documentary was graphic and detailed, informing you of the process from the farm or the fields, to the manufactures, to the labeling and packaging companies. It informed me, about the school lunches, how some of the meals at school are made, to the politics behind it. This book is also a collectible.
Although today, the vast majority would argue that eating healthier foods would be more advantageous to one’s health, the question is whether it is conducive to the faster pace lifestyle of today’s individual and family?
More and more fast food restaurants are opening door in small cities also in big cities. The food industry in being taken over by not allowing local business to progress. Cites should limit the number of fast food restaurants to allow local restaurants so costumers could buy more local. Buying more local could bring more money to the community. Trying to start a business is not that easy it takes a good mind to know what he is doing. The local restaurants are growing little by little but yet it is not enough. Cities are allowing more and more fast food restaurants to enter their cities. They are not allowing for small business to progress if at every corner you see a fast food restaurant facing each other. Communities
