Food is an important topic around Wesleyan campus. Many students question whether the food fresh, what type of chemicals are on our vegetables, and, why is there not a variety of food available in the cafeteria? Also students want more healthy choices to choose from instead of choosing oily, fatty foods. My question is how can Wesleyan and Aramark fix this dilemma? While looking for ways to help please the students, I found that there are things we can do to accommodate the food situation. Catherine Kryjack, a first year student with a serious food allergy helped me gain an understanding of the needs and request regarding Wesleyan’s Cafeteria, while Christopher Crossing, a chef in Wesleyans cafeteria assisted with the search for common ground. Malae Fiaseu, another first year student stated her issues with the cafeteria food, she believes the cafeteria needs more fruits and less oily meals. Wesleyan Colleges’ cafeteria needs more variety of foods and beverages to accommodate the needs and desires of students.
The main issue Catherine Kryjack has with the cafeteria food is that there are not enough choices of vegetable and sugar free beverages to choose from. Catherine is allergic to sugars so she is on a strict diet to keep her body healthy. She has to eat 16 ounces of meat for breakfast and she has to eat 2 pounds of vegetable for lunch. She eats the same oily bacon or sausage patties and the same lettuce. She is eating the same foods daily which is making her sick, although the food she eat is within her dietary needs. She is breaking out with acne because she eats the same oily meats that are being served. There is no assortment of meats in the cafeteria. ...s, I requested that more jasmine rice and different rice other than white to be served. The following week, jasmine rice, yellow rice, and wild rice were served on different days of the week. More different fresh vegetables were served in the cafeteria also. The way to solve the issue with poor variety of food choices is to directly request them to the head direct of Aramark. Communication will solve most of the problems. The issue with the beverages is if Aramark gets a new contract with a different beverage distributor some of the popular drinks may not be available to other students who like them, this also goes with other food. If Aramark add certain food to the menu that student request, other foods may not be on the menu that other student like. Furthermore, requesting more healthy foods and more selections will help solve students’ desire for different food.
After a long day in school and studying, every student needs a night off to just relax and enjoy a meal at a restaurant. In this modern time, some aspects of a restaurant can be the deciding choice. Many choose their restaurant of choice based on either those they are with, their personal, cultural appetite, their routine eating habits or their mood. Some of these preferences are similar yet others are the deciding differences. Two common franchise restaurants that pose differences are Applebee’s and Olive Garden. These two restaurants present their differences in environmental and food options causing a choice between them.
...College students are the next generation of food consumers just starting to purchase and prepare their own food, setting purchasing habits that will follow them into their lives as they start their own careers. These habits will shape what food is in demand, and therefore what food is produced. Not only do college students hold financial power over the future economy, but they must make the decision of whether to become the next unhealthy generation, that will also indoctrinate their children to accept the level of food quality that is currently labeled as junk food as a standard level quality of food.
In today’s society Americans want everything quick and cheap, so the question stands what is a quick lunch and what is available for an economical price? Americans live in a world that surrounds us with fast food restaurants. Two of the most well known restaurants for fast food restaurants is McDonald 's and Checkers. In conclusion the moral of this story is simple- colleges should take more responsibility and initiative when it comes to the food choices and the health of their students. The college needs to offer better food choices in their dining areas. The hours of operation should be between normal eating hours so the option to eat at an unusual or indecent hour is obsolete, and proportions should be strictly regulated and enforced. While most would argue that it is the students fault for gaining weight, I believe the facts presented are obvious in pointing you in the other direction. The school has all of the power and needs to address this issue accordingly before the epidemic becomes bigger than what we can handle.

People rely on fast food, because it’s quicker and always very convenient for full-time workers or anyone in general who just want a quick meal. Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation argues that Americans should change their nutritional behaviors. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Students at Norwalk High School are not eating enough healthy foods. Norwalk high school needs to adopt a food court system. Why, we already have a cafeteria? A food court of judges like from the judiciary system with black robes and white powdered wigs. The people of the court will judge you on your decision of how you are going to eat based on what meal you get. They can implement this by educating the lunch employees from the cooking class teachers in the high school about healthy nutrition. With the general student population the lunch employees can educate them when they go through the line of the cafeteria, and through signs and posters. This is necessary because in high school home tech where you learn about food nutrition is not mandatory.
The deaths exceed thousands each year, almost as many as million lives, and behind this serious issue, there is a simple solution; the solution is school foods. I, and many others, extremely disagree with the current filthiness of school foods that are provided regularly; therefore, the food conditions must be improved.
The cafeteria is wasting a lot of food due to the fact that it doesn't look appealing. Neither the students nor the staff is not eating the food presented. Other students and I are looking for a good lunch. Serving only one meat as an entree is not acceptable. More than one entree would benefit everyone. Another problem is that the combination of entrees and vegetables do not combine together.
There is a global crisis arising from the poor eating habits which the majority develop at an early age, and stick to, for the rest of their lifetime. Every year, many individuals lose their lives from the complications related to poor eating lifestyle such as obesity. The schools are the foundation of every discipline and lifestyle that people adopt, and so for the nation to have a healthy lifestyle free from health related complications, the first and foremost step, is to avoid junk food in schools such as soda, candy, and cakes among others. So, thanks are to the 2012 mandate for changing the school menus from junk food to healthy foodstuffs including fruits and vegetables.
People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating.
