Food marketing and advertising has had a direct impacts on the childhood obesity epidemic. There are many different ways that the food marketing business has addressed kids to their product. Food marketing and advertising has reached out to kids through their commercials, celebrities, health claims, internet, and packaging. These ways of food marketing and advertising has made a long term effect on children today. Peyton Manning earned 10 million for signing contracts to advertise for John’s, Gatorade, Oreo and Wheaties. These sport stars all signed contracts with different unhealthy food companies. Advertisements on television has many celebrities promoting their product which draw in children. Theses celebrities are drawing in children because many children look up to celebrities. Children want to just be just like many celebrities so for celebrities to promote unhealthy foods they are just encouraging kids to eat the unhealthy foods they are promoting Food advertising and marketing is not only limited to television. Food advertising is all over social media and the internet. Children today spend a lot of time on the internet whether it is through computer or a table. Many fast food chains have apps where children can download and play games. Social media sites like Facebook also are filled with games where you can run your own food business which consist of unhealthy foods. Children don’t always understand that the advertisements that they are seeing on the computer and television are not always true. Many children believe what they see so they believe everything they see on television to be true. Overall food marketing has a negative effect on children’s health. The way that fast food chain and companies are advertising today are unethical. These companies are implying unethical messages to children about their product. The food marketer’s main purpose is to make money. One on the best ways for their company to make money is through the children’s parents. Food companies are enticing children to want their product and the only way for the kid to have it is to ask their parents for it. This puts parents also at fault for the reason children are suffering from childhood
From cartoon and sports to having the toys in meals in a huge display and lowered. There are even advertisements that trick adults. They are convincing, but it can all be stopped with just simple reminders that it’s not real or it’s not good to have this in your body. These reminders can help America become less obese and more health conscious and can even affect the way children think as they grow up surrounded by them. The United States is slowly increasing its awareness of the condition that it is in by companies improving foods and people paying more attention to the nutrition’s in foods. Also many food companies have died down on television advertising for kids, but it is still found in other expressed ways. While it is okay to advertise the question of is it okay to advertise to children is still not answered. It all depends on the consumers what is right and wrong and how to approach each product. Obesity from these products can be cured by hard exercise, but this is not recommended for children. It is more efficient for children to just eat healthy as they are still growing each day. So the next time an ad pops up on the screen and that little girl or boy is focused on it try to explain to them by reading the ingredients or the nutrition label why they should not eat it often. Common believers are right that parents should be responsible for their child’s expenditures, but they seem to be on more dubious ground then they claim that is only the parents fault. I believe that the consumer, even if may be a kid, should be responsible for what they are putting in their bodies. Obesity in the United States, which the media has labeled a national crisis, has also been connected to poverty rates. Big fast food industry’s target poor communities, and spend millions of dollars each year to create advertising that appeals to these specific areas. These industry’s also target naïve children when advertising because they know that eating habits developed in childhood are usually carried into adulthood. Children who are exposed to television advertisements for unhealthy food and who are not educated well enough on good nutrition will grow up and feed their families the same unhealthy foods they ate as kids. Ironically, the marketing is harming young children through various medical issues. There are studies shown that there is an increase in bipolar disorder, as well as ADHD. As more children begin to cease playing outside, there is a surge in childhood obesity. Children are not being marketed to play outside. The advertisements on TVs show children inside and lazy. One way that fast food effects obesity is by advertising their products to children (Miller). In her article Food Advertising Contributes to Obesity, Patti Miller explains that the fast food companies are targeting kids and teenagers by advertising on television. The fast food advertisements are promoting unhealthy products as acceptable food which influences children to choose those meals. America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
Throughout the world fast food has made a tremendous impact on the marketing world and the people that are consuming the food. Marketing has been directed towards the children and adolescents throughout the world and has benefited but also harmed the fast food companies that are using these marketing techniques. The use of toys and catchy tunes attract these young people to want to buy the food from that company. But the examination of the healthiness of the food has also harmed the profit margin for these companies. As a little girl I loved watching television shows on Saturday mornings. I’d get upset when a show would proceed to commercial. That is until I watched the shiny new toy being played with by the girl my age and of course the cool new one that came into the happy meal, then I’d forget. After seeing the appealing commercial I’d run to my mom and try to slickly mention it. “You know McDonalds has a new Monster’s Inc. toy in their happy meal. Isn’t that great? “Now I realize that back then I was targeted by big companies to beg my parents for things that I didn’t need or that wasn’t good for me in order to make money. Advertising today is affecting the health of today’s children because they eat the unhealthy foods advertised to them on: television, the internet, and even at school. Therefore, an impassioned discussion of possible solutions has been brewing.
