Historical Background The history on adding fluoride to the drinking water is shaped by lies. It was insisted by the government that addition of fluoride to drinking water is safe and that it is necessary. However research conducted by many scientists’ shows that it is not safe to consume fluoride. Surveys have shown that areas where people consume fluoridated water have shown to pose serious health implications. The main reasons for adding fluoride to water is because of the pressure from industries like aluminum and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Addition of fluoride to water continues and it has become hard to go against these actions. This practice has been controversial right from the beginning. It was first added to water in 1940 by Grand rapid, mich to avoid dental cavities. Due to the same reason fluoridated toothpastes are being used. In 1969 world health organization advertised fluoridation, since then all the countries started adding fluoride to water. The American dental association, the world health organization and the British government emphasized that addition of fluoride to water will reduce the tooth decay and does not pose any threat to health. There are numerous flaws in all the evidences that support fluoride addition to water. Scientists who try to speak against the fluoridation are pressurized to change their findings. Even minute concentrations of fluoride are associated with bone disorders and dental problems. Fluoride also removes the lead coatings of the drinking water pipes due to which toxic concentrations of lead is also present in drinking water. This is caused by the excessive consumption of drugs that contain fluoride. This leads to the failure of urine concentration which causes polyuria. It also causes vasodilation. Teeth: Excess fluoride will alter the development of teeth in children. Thyroid: When the iodine levels are deficient in body fluoride suppresses the thyroid gland. Studies show that effects still remain unclear. Routes of exposure Fluoride can be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after ingestion, Inhalation, Skin. In areas where fluoride rich coal is used for heating and food preparation. Soluble forms of fluoride, such as those added to fluoridate water, have been found to be absorbed at an efficiency of 90 percent or greater. Of the ingested fluoride that remains in the body, 99 percent of it will get incorporated into bones and teeth.
