Fluorine In the Water When people brush their teeth, they always consume a slight amount of fluoride. Fluoride, being the simplest anion of the element fluorine, is used for dental hygiene purposes, mainly in toothpaste. However, the substance has been added to water supply in the United States and other parts of the world in order to improve overall dental health of the population just from water consumption. Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Fluoridated water contains fluoride at a level that is effective for preventing cavities; this can occur naturally or by adding fluoride. However, it is not particularly healthy to consume large amounts of fluoride like this, …show more content…
Fluoride is a substance that contains salts, minerals, and chemical reagents. On top of that, it is an inorganic anion derived from the element fluorine on the periodic table. That is definitely something that people should not put directly into their bodies. “Fluoride is a highly toxic substance. Consider, -- the poison warning that the FDA now requires on all fluoride toothpastes sold in the U.S. or the tens of millions of people throughout China and India who now suffer serious crippling bone diseases from drinking water with elevated levels of fluoride (Fluoride Action Network).” Even though fluoride is good for your dental health and bones, too much of it is unhealthy. The chronic health risks associated with the fluoridation of water is off the charts, as the exposure from drinking water is quite unreasonable. Hypothetically, if somebody consumes a harmless amount of sodium every day, the effects should not be so negative and potent. However, if a lethal dose of sodium was consumed every day, then a toxicity would occur, putting the individual at risk for hypertension . The same applies to every other substance including fluoride. Too much of anything is not healthy for the human body. Elevated levels of a chemical that is meant to be consumed in moderation, or not at all, will lead to unsafe results health wise. If countries …show more content…
Acute fluoride poisoning, meaning that even a small dose can have negative repercussions, causes a range of “clinical syndrome characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and paresthesias” (NEJM Group). In 1992, an Alaskan village suffered from fluoride poisoning because of excess amount in the water supply. The researchers “surveyed residents, measured their urinary fluoride concentrations, and analyzed their serum-chemistry profiles. A case of fluoride poisoning was defined as an illness consisting of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or numbness or tingling of the face or extremities that began between May 21 and 23” (NEJM Group). Resulting from the conducted tests were accounts of 1 death out of nearly 300 people who were poisoned. When the water was tested, it was shown to contain a whopping 150 mg/L, and one sample containing 1.1 mg/L, only 110th of a mg more than the set 1 mg recommendation for water fluoridation in the United States. The researchers concluded that “inspection of public water systems and monitoring of [all] fluoride concentrations are needed to prevent outbreaks of fluoride poisoning” (NEJM Group). If there are water sources in the country that result in even one death, and even health repercussion from tiny amounts of fluoride in the water, then man-made fluoridation
Thesis Statement: Concerns for water fluoridation stem from the toxicity of fluoride, the dangers fluoride pose to the body, and equal declining tooth decay seen for fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries.
This experiment was conduct to investigate the fluorescent behaviour of Leucophor PAF and to investigate the quenching of QBS with NaCl. It was found that the Leucophor PAF indeed satisfied the characteristic to act as whitening agent. It was also found that the quenching of QBS with NaCl was a diffusion-controlled collision process.
My first argument for the fluoridation of water is that everyone in society should have equal opportunities for dental health improvements; water fluoridation achieves this as it promotes equity within society by making increased fluoride accessible to everyone. The principle of equity aims to ensure resources within society are distributed in a way that results in everyone their minimum requirements met (Reid & Robson, 2007). Public water fluoridation therefore creates equity for dental health improvements by making some level of preventative care available to everyone (Awofeso, 2012). This builds on the idea...
In order to separate the mixture of fluorene, o-toluic acid, and 1, 4-dibromobenzene, the previously learned techniques of extraction and crystallization are needed to perform the experiment. First, 10.0 mL of diethyl ether would be added to the mixture in a centrifuge tube (1) and shaken until the mixture completely dissolved (2). Diethyl ether is the best solvent for dissolving the mixture, because though it is a polar molecule, its ethyl groups make it a nonpolar solvent. The compounds, fluorene and 1, 4-dibromobenzene, are also nonpolar; therefore, it would be easier for it to be dissolved in this organic solvent.
We often say how lucky we are to live in a place where we have access to safe water at any time but what if that was questioned? What if our water isn’t safe; it’s just that now we can’t see the dangers? Throughout the world 25 first world countries fluoridate some amount of their water artificially; almost half of these countries have the majority of their population drinking this chemically enhanced liquid every single day. In the UK 11% of us only have access to fluoridated water [70% in Ireland], and in the USA its 60%. After a quick browse on Google, the information about fluoride that can be learned from the NHS is mainly about teeth and tooth decay as fluoride is put in our toothpaste due to its claimed abilities to help tooth enamel fight attack [nothing has ever alluded to supporting this claim]. What can’t be seen at
Few object to the therapeutic use of fluoride to stop tooth decay, but fluoridation, the addition of fluoride to the public water supply, can spark avid controversy. Most dentists, medical groups, and government officials argue that fluoridation is a cheap and risk-free venture that doubles cavity prevention. In contrast, a small minority of dentists and conservative political groups argue that fluoride is a hazardous, poisonous substance that should not be consumed. Some antifluoridationists even claim that fluoridation is an untrustworthy form of socialized medicine. But rather than just attacking fluoridation as socialized medicine, opponents originally claimed that it was a conspiracy to poison or brainwash Americans through the water supply. This theory arose in the 1940s when the scientific community refused to endorse or reject fluoridation, thus allowing the debate to expand into the social sphere. While fluoridation opposition may be subconsciously inspired by naturalism, the social development of fluoridation into a Communist or fascist conspiracy resulted from a conscious effort by conservatives to suppress a growing government.
Fluoride is being overused in the United States and there needs to be a stop to it. With all the problems it is causing, the limit being used should be something everyone should worry about. Many think fluoride is good for you because it whitens your teeth, and dentist offer it every time you go there, but clearly it is not. Fluoride does help with a lot of things like mottling of teeth and whitening teeth, but health problems are occurring, and it needs to come to a stop. Department of Health and Human Services have recommended a level of 0.7 milligrams per liter as a optimal for fluoride in drinking water throughout the United States. (State of Washington) Clearly, they are using more than normal that is it starting to cause a lot of health problems. To finalize, fluoride is being overused in the US, and there needs to be a stop to
As the above definition suggests, water fluoridation is the process by which municipal water supplies are treated with fluoride based elements as a counter-measure to dental issues. This has become a health and social issue; it is a form of ‘mass medicine’ that has found to be the cause of a variety of health concerns.
Fluoride is considered a drug by the Food and Drug Administration therefore a type of mediation which is why I made the claim of mass medication, which I believe is unethical to put in a public goods such as water. That is one of the reason other developed nations like Europe decided to stop this practice (FluorideAlert). Fluoride is already found in items such as toothpaste and other like items, putting it in the water just farther leads to over dosing the set limit of fluoride before the FDA declares it unsafe which is 2.4mg per liter of water (FluorideAlert). It can be clearly proven that this limits are surpassed daily for the average person and one sign is that more children are being affected by dental fluorosis, a condition that causes white or brown discoloration or spots on the enamel, or tooth surface that only occurs from to much fluoride and this should not be much of surprise if you include the fact that on top of water having anywhere from 0.7-1.4mg of fluoride, toothpaste is 94% fluoride, processed beverages also contain it, and many other products we would not think of like tea. While its just considered more of a cosmetic issue, it is also an indictor or red flag of over exposure on the rest of the
Fluoride added in our waters would also add other toxics. “The CDC admits that that 43% of fluoridation chemicals tested from contain arsenic, 2% contain lead and 3%contain copper” (12 Reasons). How is that supposed to help our bodies or decrease tooth decay? Scientist say, that the level of them are too low to do any damage. The Environmental Protection Agency however, states that arsenic and lead have increased IQ deficit risks and cancer (12 Rea...
In conclusion, its recommended that patients brush two-three times a day two minutes long to insure that most of the bacteria is removed from the teeth, gums, and tongue also. Flossing after every meal should also be done regularly because of left foods that get stuck between the teeth. There are many kinds of toothpaste, but not all contain fluorine. Its important that you chose on that does have fluorine because it rebuild tooth enamel and strengthen the tooth too.
Floridium, also known as Fd, is a new element with currently the highest atomic number of 173 and a mass of 486.9 g. Floridium is a part of the P-block and a superactinide , falling right after Neodymium (Nd). It is also highly nonpolar with Neodymium. Because it is a p orbital, it has a dumbbell shaped orbital with three possible orientations. In addition, it has an orange-brown color, is ductile and malleable, and has a boiling point of -57.8 Celsius. The element is quite rare, only found in the Southeast United States. As of 2016, Floridium has been recognized by scientists as an element.
However since fluorine-18 is unstable it must decay to form a positive beta particle (or positron) and an oxygen-18. This is done inside the human body as the Fluorine and pharmaceutical accumulate in the tumour.
Would you drink water that contained cancer-causing chemicals? Would you let someone medicate you without your consent? Would you ingest something that was fed to concentration camp victims? No matter what the answer to those questions was, it is most likely happening anyways. The fluoride added to the United States water systems is extremely detrimental to human health. It is also a complete violation of human rights and consent. And because of its history and biological effects, it may be used in order to keep citizens easy to manipulate. Adding fluoride to water systems should be illegal as the government can employ it to control our minds.
After some internet research, I realized quickly that he did not look so good that .... Although naturally present in the human body, do not overload our bodies with and consume less than 0.05 mg / day.
