She knew that advocating change in the health care system was the only way to improve it. According to Mislead (2016), Involvement in policy decisions and political process is an integral part of the nursing role because of our history, practice, education, and professional organizations. To facilitate planning networking will be important .Key stakeholders, community partners , and leaders would include health professionals, local hospitals ,health departments both state and local , primary care associates , federally funded health programs , local businesses that are health advocates , major university hospitals with research programs, and people from the local communities ( MAPP, 2015) . An important step in the change process is to know how the change will affect the community and use this information to advocate changes for improvement. Networking with these resources will be needed to assist and set priorities to address these deficits in NC. It will also be necessary to tap into local resources such as the Society for Public Health Education ( SOPHE ) who dispenses information to public and health officials about preventing cardiovascular disease. One of these handouts is titled North Carolina Preventing Cardiovascular Disease. (Society for Public Health Education, 2015). This is but one of the ways I would get the information to the patients and stakeholders to help spread information to promote change. I would request funding from local communities, state and federal agencies and …show more content…
Other plans include coordinating a conference with our key stake holders and Laura, as guest speaker to provide information about the program called Healthy People 2020 Heart Disease and Stroke. I would utilize local news stations’ community service ads and attend local churches to educate the community on their own turf. I would also collaborate with other organizations with similar causes to keep momentum going and gain additional support. One of these programs would be the Raise the Voice campaign, a nurse led innovations for changing public policy, this organization include nurse led innovations that emphasis health promotion and wellness, and chronic care management and coordination. (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014). Other administrative duties would include basic operational duties, supplies, printing space, transportation etc. The slogan for our program would be “Changing the hearts of North Carolina “The next step is to set up a timeline for completion. Timeline • November –December 2015 –Create website to inform potential supporters about program. • Establish goals for

Following that, “Plan Health Education/Promotion” is the second responsibility that health educators must follow—Furthermore, educators must “Involve Priority Populations and Other Stakeholders in the Planning Process”(NCHEC, n.d., p. 2). This requires greater involvement of the population that the plan will impact the most, in addition,
Registered nurses work to contribute good health and prevent illness. They also treat patients and help go through there rehabilitation and also give support and advice to patients family. Nursing advocacy is a professional obligation and the standard of practice expected by the Ontario College of Nurses (CNO, 2009). The concept of advocacy is enshrined into the code of professional ethics that nurses “must promote the interests of clients in their care” (CNO 2009). To meet this standard the nurse must first ensure a deep understanding of advocacy and how it relates to the nursing profession. Advocacy in nursing is a concept that can be first seen in the early work of nursing theorist Florence Nightingale and her plight to protect the safety of patients through autonomous nursing actions (Goldie, 1987). Although the concept of advocacy had been presented in early nursing theory, the term “advocacy” had not been
Although our main mission is to provide great care to our patients, Florence Nightingale has taught us (Burkhardt & Nathaniel 2008, 3rd Ed. P18-19) that if we do not have legislative power many of our ideas can be oppressed therefore prevent the profession from thriving. To be well organized as a profession is very important, since many of the rules and regulation that govern us often come from a legislative process. According to Burckhardt and Nathaniel, we nurses, are nearly 3 million, ( Abood, S. January 2007). In addition to our caring skills we need to enact our lobbying and legislative skills to participate in the process and help protect the legitimacy of the profession. While many lawmakers may have advisers with some medical knowledge. However, many of these lawmakers have no background in the medical field particularly in the nursing field. We must get involved, let them feel our presence, not only through voting, but al...
Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines an advocate as “one that pleads the cause of another,” or “one that supports or promotes the interest of another” (2014). Bu and Jezewski expanded on this by developing a mid-range theory of patient advocacy to implement into nursing (2007). They describe a patient as being “vulnerable and powerless” when stricken with illness and without knowledge of health care systems (Bu & Jezewski, 2007). The goal of the theory was to give the patient a voice in circumstances where they weren’t able to speak up for themselves and to maintain the patient’s integrity (Bu & Jezewski, 2007). They found three core attributes to what would make up
In Nursing, there will always be instances where the patient's nurse needs to advocate for their patient. There are numerous reasons why a nurse would advocate for their patient ranging from getting the doctor to change the patient’s orders, helping the patient’s treatment team understand what it is the patient is requiring for the day, to expressing the patient’s last wishes before death. In every situation, the nurse should do what is in the patient’s best interest. Tomajan (2012), “Advocacy skills are the ability to successfully support a cause or interest on one’s own behalf or that of another. Advocacy requires a set of skills that include problem solving, communication, influence, and collaboration”(p. 2). With those skills, the nursing staff will be able to work together to advocate for their patients. Along with those skills, nurses need to keep in mind the three core attributes that are: safeguarding patients’ autonomy; acting on behalf of patients; and championing social justice in the provision of health care. (Bu & Jezewski, 2006)
Nurses are active, they see policies as what they can restructure or change, instead of taking it as what has been imposed on them. They are involved in policy development as well as working together as one profession. As nurses, they participating in decision making regarding health policies, as well as taking part in implementations associated with changes in health care. Currently, nurses are serving “on advisory committees, commissions, and boards” (Cohen, M. & Walker, A. 2010). Policies and decisions in these areas will help to advance patient care in health

As someone who has many aspirations in life, I understand having both long and short-term goals is important. One of my long-term professional objectives includes being a community service manager at a health center. With this I am hoping to work with many other healthcare professionals to coordinate health programs and initiatives to improve the health of communities. Having a background in health promotion alongside the leadership and management skills and the real world experience that I intended to gain from this program will give me all I need to make this
Florence Nightingale played a large role in establishing modern day nursing. She wanted to help the sick and the elderly as a child and grew up to become a very successful nurse. Nightingale cemented nursing as a respectable profession and went on to train in nursing against her family’s wishes. She contributed politically in the Crimean war tending to wounded soldiers along with dozens of other trained nurses. Florence Nightingale made significant contributions to the nursing profession, most notable are her effects on modern day nursing and political effects on society. The contributions she made were very rebellious for the time, because nursing was considered a poor job and she was from a very wealthy family. Before her, people did not train to become a nurse it was based on trial and error. This was a very flawed plan because people would die from curable illnesses.

There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
