Florence Nightingale’s Influence on the Art and Science of Nursing
To this day, the most admired person in nursing history would be Florence Nightingale. She will forever be an influential figure in the world of nursing due to her perseverance and critical thinking skills that saved so many lives during the Crimean War. There is no way to tell how long it could have taken nursing to evolve without the help of Nightingale. In her book, Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, Nightingale described a multitude of factors that must be considered when helping the ill to recover and to have the healthy maintain their well-being (Nightingale, 1860/1969). Both are essential elements that complement each other while cooperating within the scope of nursing practice and the definition of nursing. In addition, Meehan (2009) states her definition of nursing, “modern nursing is a dynamic career, providing an incredibly board range of opportunities and a real chance to have an interesting successful career that makes a real difference to other people’s lives” (p.1). Meehan’s definition of nursing talks about having the ability to have a real difference in someone’s life that is exactly where the nursing art and science aspect comes in. In reference to Jasmine (2009) who is able to provide support on why nursing can be viewed as an art, a science, and the combination of the two. Nursing is described as a “complex union of art and science” (Jasmine, 2009, p. 415). All through Nightingale’s chapters of her book she integrated the arts and science of nursing; for example back in chapter two there were five aspects of keeping a clean home. The aspects would be the science part. When something requires the attention to be cleaned is when the art aspect comes in. The nurse taking care of the patients wants her patient to get better. Take precautions and keeping the rooms clean up to Nightingale’s standard. There is no exact clear-cut definition of what the integration of art and nursing is in every situation, however it is there and present in all
notices to patients and their families, schedule and lead the meetings. Wishing to be actively involved in the process, I represented nursing along with the charge nurse of the unit and the charge aide.

Nursing as a profession dates back for at least several centuries. Those first truly recognized as nurses were wet nurses, or those who cared for the child when the mother was unable to. However, as with most modern jobs, nursing has progressed with the passage of time. Throughout history, there were many influential nurses, such as Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. Moreover, one nurse known to many to have contributed greatly to the field of nursing is Florence Nightingale.
Registered nurses work to contribute good health and prevent illness. They also treat patients and help go through there rehabilitation and also give support and advice to patients family. Registered nurses are general-duty nurses who focus in the achievement of caring for their patients. They are under the supervision of a doctor. As I researched this career It brought more questions to my life. It became a big interest that soon I would have an opportunity to answer my own questions obviously with the help of others.
Florence Nightingale is a very prominent person in the medical field. She had a strong desire to devote her life to helping others. She is known as the founder of modern medicine. The Nightingale Pledge is taken by new nurses and was named in her honor. The annual International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday. Without her contributions healthcare would not be what it is today.
Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy. Her parents named her after the city she was born in. She was born on May 12, 1980, she was raised mostly in Derbyshire, England. Many people when they hear Florence Nightingale think about her as a nurse and her fight for better hospital care. Florence did a lot more in her life than achieve better hospital conditions, and become a nurse.
Advocacy in Population Health One only has to look back at the history of nursing to see why advocacy in the area of health for the population is so important. Florence Nightingale fought for change in nursing. Her advocacy for improving health care ultimately changed how nurses were viewed in our country and in the world. She knew that advocating change in the health care system was the only way to improve it. According to Mislead (2016), Involvement in policy decisions and political process is an integral part of the nursing role because of our history, practice, education, and professional organizations.
Nursing theory is, “the principle that underpin practice and help to generate further nursing knowledge” (Colley, 2003, p. 33). Nursing theory is important in nursing practice. The two theorists that are relevant to my nursing practice are Florence Nightingale and Hildegard Peplau. Florence Nightingale theory was about the patient having a clean and healing environment (Smith & Park, 2015, p. 51). The theory that Hildegard Peplau created was the importance of nurse-patient relationships (Smith & Park, 2015, p. 68). Both of these theories put the patient’s safety and care first. When I am at work I try to form a healthy and healing relationship with all my patients. I also make sure the environment that they are in is conducive to healing, it is hard to do that sometime working in the emergency room. Sometimes it is the little things that a nurse can do for a patient that will make all the difference. Taking both of these theories into

Before the modernization and reform of their profession in the mid-1800s, nurses were believed to perform “women’s work”, which implied menial duties, unskilled service, and an overall lack of skill (Garey, "Sentimental women need not apply"). This mentality was substantiated by the “untrained attendants, [including] past patients, vagrants, and prostitutes,” that performed a variety of nursing tasks (Garey). Florence Nightingale’s nursing experiences during the Crimean War, her subsequent publication of Notes on Nursing, and her work to build up professionalism within the field transformed the way that the world and society viewed nursing. She introduced invigorating ideas of patient care, nursing roles and responsibilities, and was a strong proponent of nursing education. A theory I can relate to is Nightingales theory, I found her theory to be extremely interesting. A patient health is affected by the environment that they are in, whether it is at the hospital or at their house. Once a patient is discharged the nurse should be aware of the patient home environment, what they have access to, and what they don’t have.
Florence Nightingale played a large role in establishing modern day nursing. She wanted to help the sick and the elderly as a child and grew up to become a very successful nurse. Nightingale cemented nursing as a respectable profession and went on to train in nursing against her family’s wishes. She contributed politically in the Crimean war tending to wounded soldiers along with dozens of other trained nurses. Florence Nightingale made significant contributions to the nursing profession, most notable are her effects on modern day nursing and political effects on society. The contributions she made were very rebellious for the time, because nursing was considered a poor job and she was from a very wealthy family. Before her, people did not train to become a nurse it was based on trial and error. This was a very flawed plan because people would die from curable illnesses.
If I were to go back in time, the Number One person I would want to speak with is Florence Nightingale. I remember in my 5th grade social studies class when we watched an animation based on Florence Nightingale; It was the first time I was told about her and she instantly became my hero. After I watched the animation, I went home and researched more information about her. I was so intrigued by the story I even ended up writing a research paper on her life. What caught my interest was when I learned she got her calling to become a nurse from God. Knowing that was very inspiring for me because I also believe I that I have a calling from God to become a doctor, so I immediately connected with her.
One of the theorist I connect with is Florence Nightingale. As a nurse I believe your care should always be centered around the patient. We are there to serve no one else but the patient. And that is my number one priority. Many things impact recovery. Nightingale’s Environmental Theory (as cited in Blais & Hayes, 2011) is centered to “utilize the environment of the patient to assist in recovery.”
