In Computing, optical disc drives are described by Wikipedia as a disk drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs. Some optical disc drives can only read from discs, but recent drives are able to both read and record, also called burners or writers. These drives are very commonly used in computers to read software and consumer media distributed on disc, and to record discs for archival and data exchange purposes. (Wikipedia)
An optical disc is a flat, round portable metal disc with a plastic covering. The most common of these are CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. Nearly every computer these days has an optical disc drive installed. Many different formats for the optical disc exist. The format of the disc specifies whether a user can read from the disc, write on the disc, or do both read and write.
These different types of discs are categorized as follows: A CD-ROM (compact disc read-only memory) is an optical disc that users can read but not write. I guess that’s why the genius named it read-only! Next is a CD-R (or compact disc recordable) this is an optical on which users can write, but not erase. There are also optical discs called a CD-RW (compact disc rewritable) this is an erasable multisession disc you can write on multiple times. To write on a CD-RW disc you must have optical disc burning software and a CD-RW drive. Another type of optical disc is a DVD-ROM (digital versatile disk-read-only memory or digital video disc-read-only memory) which is a high-capacity optical disc which users can only read, they are unable to write or erase. Another feature that is a first in the console industry is Xbox’s internal 8-Gigabyte (Gb) Hard-Drive or Hard Disk Drive (Hdd). This contributes too much of Xbox’s weight, but gives many features. With this you don’t have a need for a memory card to save your game files, you save them right to the hard-drive. This is a very nice feature on the Xbox, because it saves you money.

A Worldwide Problem Software piracy is defined as the illegal copying of software for commercial or personal gain. Software companies have tried many methods to prevent piracy, with varying degrees of success. Several agencies like the Software Publishers Association and the Business Software Alliance have been formed to combat both worldwide and domestic piracy. Software piracy is an unresolved, worldwide problem, costing millions of dollars in lost revenue. Software companies have used many different copy protection schemes. The most annoying form of copy protection is the use of a key disk. This type of copy protection requires the user to insert the original disk every time the program is run. It can be quite difficult to keep up with disks that are years old. The most common technique of copy protection requires the user to look up a word or phrase in the program's manual. This method is less annoying than other forms of copy protection, but it can be a nuisance having to locate the manual every time. Software pirates usually have no trouble "cracking" the program, which permanently removes the copy protection. After the invention of CD-ROM, which until lately was uncopyable, most software companies stopped placing copy protection in their programs. Instead, the companies are trying new methods of disc impression. 3M recently developed a new technology of disc impression which allows companies to imprint an image on the read side of a CD-ROM. This technology would not prevent pirates from copying the CD, but it would make a "bootleg" copy differ from the original and make the copy traceable by law enforcement officials (Estes 89). Sometimes, when a person uses a pirated program, there is a "virus" attached to the program. Viruses are self-replicating programs that, when activated, can damage a computer. These viruses are most commonly found on pirated computer games, placed there by some malignant computer programmer. In his January 1993 article, Chris O' Malley points out that if piracy was wiped out viruses would eventually disappear (O' Malley 60). There are ways that a thrifty consumer can save money on software without resorting to piracy. Computer companies often offer discounts on new software if a person has previously purchased an earlier version of the software. Competition between companies also drives prices low and keeps the number of pirated copies down (Morgan 45). People eventually tire or outgrow their software and decide to sell it.
Knowledge is rarely considered permanent, because it is constantly changing and adapting as time passes and new discoveries are made. This title roughly translates into the question: to what extent is knowledge provisional? In other words, to what extent does knowledge exist for the present, possibly to be changed in the future? At first glance, one’s mind would immediately stray to the natural sciences, and how theories are constantly being challenged, disproven, and discarded. Because of this, one might be under the impression that knowledge is always provisional because there is always room for improvement; however, there are some cases in which this is not true. There are plenty of ideas and theories that have withstood the test of time, but on the other end of the spectrum there are many that have not. This essay will evaluate the extent to which knowledge is provisional in the areas of the human sciences and history.
So if you’re a photographer or someone that is looking for storage, the best option would be to get yourself a hard disk drive, it might be slow, but you’re paying far less than a solid state drive and getting a lot more storage. The more gigabytes the solid state drive, the more it will cost as they are the new technology, and to get the newest technology, you have to pay the big bucks. On August 15, 2015, Samsung developed and released the world’s largest hard drive at 16TB, and it’s a solid state drive… I wonder how much that is going for. A storage device is the system where your computer stores and retrieves your data. Storage devices can be a hard disk drive, DVD, CD drives, Blu-Ray drives or flash drives. A computer can retrieve the data by being “commanded” to retrieve it from the storage area and retrieve it to your RAM. The RAM of the computer is your temporary memory where your data is inputted, and then processed and stored onto a storage device for permanent placement.
Before understanding the physics principles, one must understand the physical design that induces them. A magnetic disk is a flat, circular, rigid sheet of aluminum coated with a layer of magnetic material (can be double sided). The material usually is a form of iron oxide with various other elements added. The disk rotates upon a central axis and a movable read/write head writes information along concentric tracks (circular paths traced out by motion of the disk) on it. Multiple disks can be stacked to store more information. Typically (1985) 11 disks with 22 surfaces, of which 20 are used (minus top/bottom), are manipulated to read/write data.
