There are two different mindsets: fixed, and mindset. People with fixed mindsets don’t try hard and like Carol Dweck said “Now they have a choice: work hard and feel dumb or don’t work hard and act smart.” This has to do with fixed mind set and how they rather look smart than do the work to make them smart. She also said “Act as though you could do well if you wanted to you just don’t care to.” Another quote for a fixed mindset, that shows they rather appear lazy then do the work. A growth mind set is different they try to get better and they keep working on school. Carol Dweck said “The harder you work at something the better you will be at it.” This quote shows a growth mindset, and how they a willing to work at something to get better at it. They will keep working even if they fail as perfectly explained by Carol Dweck “They may be very disappointed by a poor performance but they deal with it directly.” Another way a growth mindset is different from a fixed mindset, when they do a bad job on something they will work on it to fix what they did wrong. I hate making mistakes, it makes me feel like I cannot get the essay right, and so I should just give up. I believe that if people knew I made a mistake, they would judge me, and that someone is always going to be better than me, so why try? If I do something to the best of what I can do, I will always be judged on what someone else did. No matter how hard I work at something it will never be perfect. People will always find something to fix. When I make a mistake and I am told to fix it, and I do it will still not be right. I don’t usually ask what I can do to fix something, and when I do ask what I did wrong, I will have no idea how to fix it. Even with this mind set I got through high school, but I did have friends that helped me when I was too lazy to do it
It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
People with growth mind-sets often believe that one can succeed simply by trying and having the motivation to do so. On the other hand, those with fixed mind-sets believe they are either good or bad at something, while attempting something for the first time. If one can easily do math while another can’t, the one who can’t accepts it and doesn’t feel the need to try succeeding further because they’re just not good at it in the first place.
These students come in with a fixed mindset in what it will be a class about just reading and writing on boring topics and that they will neither understand the readings or develop a well-written paper. Yet, there are those that see it as a way of being introduced to new material and hearing the different point of views from peers and instructor. What can harness the development of a growth mindset in a class? Well for starters we can start Dweck recommends taking careful consideration of the words given to the students (p.4). Dweck also says to not to praise their intelligence but the effort of the student. For instance, by replacing the word “fail” to “learn” it can have two different outcomes. It can be used in a term as if falling short on a goal; it is not that they “fail” but they “learn” from what kept them from reaching that goal. What does it mean to be a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset? In the book Mindset – The New Psychology of Success author Carol Dweck breaks down the meanings of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person sees their failures as being an unsuccessful person. These fixed mindsets do not aim to challenge themselves due to the possibility of not succeeding or being seen dumb. They are discouraged by failing and hold back in life. Carol Dweck describes this has unhappiness. A growth mindset is a person who welcomes failures and takes these failures as a challenge to grow from their mistakes. As far as I can remember, I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time, I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology”. In it, Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are those with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge, an opportunity to learn something new.
There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.
A fixed mindset is when people set barriers to themselves and believe they won’t be able to do or learn what they want to do. Marina Krakovsky writes about fixed mind set in her article “The Effort Effect”. In her article a business professor explains how grading systems make people think negatively about their potential, “Business School professor Jeffrey Pfeffer says Dweck’s research has implications for the more workaday problem of performance management. He faults businesses for spending too much time in rank-and-yank mode, grading and evaluating people instead of developing their skills” (Krakovsky). In other words Krakovsky points out how in our society we focus too much on our failures and mistakes.
Many of life's lessons are learned through failure. To grow as an individual, a person must accept their failures and use them as learned tools to improve. My personal obstacle has been writing quality essays. Throughout my high school career, I struggled with writing papers. Perfecting my writing skills to years of practice and multiple failed attempts at writing. Failing High School paper helped me become a better writer and allowed me to learn myself.

Many high schoolers drop out every year because they lack the grit to keep going. Much is not known about building grit, except for one idea created at Stanford University by Dr.Dweck called "growth mindset." The belief that learning isn't fixed and it can change with your effort. In this case we must expand our horizons and discover more ways to build grit in this generation and the future.
This same mindset also helped me through middle school and high school. I watched many of my friends begin to do drugs and give up on school. My goal was to get into college, thus I gave my best effort into getting respectable grades and maintaining a high GPA. However, this mindset does not just apply to school. When meeting people who have different outlooks on life, I also give my best effort to try and understand where they are coming
These mindsets have a large impact in our lives including my own! Even though a growth mindset is the ideal mindset, I consider myself to have more of a fixed mindset than a growth mindset.
Using the fixed and growth mindset practice tool at work, I discovered I had a fixed mindset in 2016. I was taken back by the results because I was positive I had more of a growth mindset. As I reflected on the scores, I became painfully aware of the damaging effects of this mindset. I had missed so many opportunities in my personal life because I avoid anything that would challenge my abilities or skill set.

Sometimes students are fixed mindset tempted to do some learning, but at the end attended to do the same as before. Also worry about how much different they are from other students. Growth mindsets believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. Students are ready for the challenges they receive. The confidence of a growing student has its untouchable willing to learn more and
