The relationship between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett is defined by the title of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth must overcome obstacles in their relationship to possess a happily ever after. Relationships often have surmountable obstructions. These obstructions are often frequently caused by misunderstandings and hindrances from family and peers. Elizabeth’s and Fitzwilliam’s relationship was plagued with bad first impressions, arrogance, and a prideful attitude.

Darcy’s rude and arrogant attitude is the cause for Elizabeth’s continuing contempt of him. As Elizabeth and Miss Lucas discuss the arrogant nature of Mr. Darcy, she says, “I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.”(Austen Loc 217) She only sees the negative traits of Darcy and is unwilling to see her own prejudice of him. After the failed proposal, Darcy’s letter made it clear to Elizabeth that her reasons for disliking him were not as they seemed. As she learned more about his character, generosity, and kindness as a master, her feelings for him changed. With the realization that Darcy’s earlier prejudice had lessened she realized that she cared very much. Different personalities, opposite cultures, and ideas can cause disagreements in a relationship. These opposing views must be faced in order to have a strong partnership.
