While everybody else will write about their experience when they first left the States to go elsewhere like Germany, in my case is the other way around. I will talk about when I left my home town for the first time to go to the States, my first journey ever to the west, a western Country.
I was born and grew up in Northern Morocco, in a small town, colonized by Spain for a long time, my people are conservative a mix between culture and mild religious belief. I said mild because we never knew any kind of extremism. Everybody knows everybody, everybody trusts everybody and everybody respects everybody. Our close relationship with Spain opened Europe for us, we were in constant contact with their culture, their TV shows their way of living,

My first shopping experience ever was to a local Walmart, it was, in my eyes a gigantic shop, before getting to Walmart, I must say: everything I saw so far was huge, the roads, the houses even the cars were different and bigger. Back at Walmart, I didn’t know from where to start, I wanted to see everything, to read every label on every product, it was like a huge library, I remember it’s like entering a library for the first time –because I loved reading- I wanted to read every book in there not to get out until I had finished them all maybe tomorrow they wouldn’t be there…. I ended up fighting the desire to stay in the Walmart the whole day so I grabbed the essentials and went to pay, the cashier was a good person with a smiley face, but I couldn’t say anything or do anything, I kept a poker face the whole time. I didn’t know how to act, even if I knew some English I felt dumb every time someone asked me something in English, I answered with a confused smile or I turn to my husband asking him: what did they say? It took me a long time to erase my other language from my brain and focus only on English. I began understanding their way of talking but took me a longer time to get enough confidence to speak English with a native. Shopping in the States is expensive, paying bills is complicated, they keep sending you bills even if you have paid them, if you …show more content…
So little by little I began to relax my face features, I began smiling to people around me. I must say I missed the warmth of people, their hospitality and their concern. When someone comes for the first time to a neighborhood, everybody welcomes them, helping them, inviting them to their house, best friends from the first day, on the other hand in the States, people don’t care, I spend more than a year in my neighborhood and I didn’t know any of my neighbors and no one ever said hi to me, a pretty big culture shock that caused me to go into a depression, for someone as lonely as I were in the States, it was very difficult for me to learn to meet and socialize no friends or family around me, so I bought a cat. I must say it was a big help for me during my stay and then my kid was born. I was adapting to the life in the States little by little, I started to adjust to my surrounding but still no social life no friends or acquaintances, but I didn’t care that much we were planning to go to Germany, I’ll be closer to

Then again, I looked forward to this new life, a new beginning. I imagined it being like life in the movies, where everything seemed easy and life was just beautiful. When I first came to this country, I wasn’t thinking about the language, how to learn it, use it, write, how I’m going to speak with people who are next to you and you want to talk to them. My first experience was in Veterans School, it was my first year in school here in United States, and I was in eight grades. The first day of school you were suppose to go with your parent, especially if you were new in the school, like me. What happened was that I didn’t bring my dad whit me, a woman was asking me a lot of questions and I was completely loss, I didn’t have any idea of what she was telling me and I was scare. One funny thing, I started cry because I fell like frustrate, I didn’t know no one from there. Someone seat next to me, and ask me in Spanish what was wrong and I just say in my mind thanks God for send me this person, then I answered her that I didn’t know Engl...
Coming to a foreign country is a daunting experience. When I first moved to America, I had to leave everything behind such as, - my family, friends, and life back home. Although I welcomed the change, I was also afraid. This fear hovered over me for a long time before I had the courage to let it go. My experiences, both good and bad, allowed me to break out of my shell, become a leader for my family, and strive against all the odds to achieve my goals.
It is my memory of first year in the United States. Back then, I was a between 16 and 17 years old girl who would be called, ‘fob,’ which means ‘fresh off the boat.’ I was quite shy, not fluent in English, exotic looking and nervous but excited at the same time. Coming to the U.S. all by myself, leaving behind familiar culture, friends and family was quite challenging at such a young age, but I was all ready to endure hardship and obstacles of language barrier, cultural difference and loneliness. However, the trouble that pushed me into the well of suffering that I could not see the bottom came from the most unexpected source. It was my host family; they were white with a middle-class background, living in a rural area. They seemed like nice and friendly people at first. They brought me and my roommate to various events and places where I can learn American culture, helped me learn English, taught us the basic manner accepted in the U.S. and even celebrated my birthday. Nevertheless, they had a contradicting side as well. The family had eccentrically strict house rules which gave us heavy house chore, and eventually it led them to treat my roommate and me like housekeepers in the
When I first moved to America I had many difficult, but positive life changing experiences. My parents, five sisters, four brothers, and I were all very nervous and excited to start a new life. Who doesn’t like shopping? I can’t name one person. Phyllis rose states many positive qualities in her essay “Shopping and Other Spiritual Adventures in America Today”. One of the positives qualities she mentions about shopping is that it’s a form of therapy. Being that I love to shop. Rather it’s online or going to the stores it’s something I also find very therapeutic. You don't really need, let's say, another sweater. You need the feeling of power that comes with buying or not buying it. You need the feeling that someone wants something you have--even if it's just your money. To get the benefit of shopping, you needn't actually purchase the sweater. After a long stressful work or school day there’s nothing more relaxing than walking around
It is through the events in the journey of life that shapes and molds who we are as people. As for me, immigrating to America was one of those milestones that have shaped who I am. Those who have had the opportunity of moving from a different country to America know what a privilege it is. I felt the same honor to know that I would be journeying to the land of opportunity. Without hesitance, I spent the last two months packing and making the final preparations before moving to a new continent. Although it was a bittersweet time, leaving my beloved family behind, I knew that I couldn’t resist the treasure that waited for me in the new land. Coming from a developing nation the high level of sophistication that greeted me on arrival to America made feel like I was in paradise.
As far back as I could remember, I was always in a rush to grow up and be responsible. I was about thirteen when I realized I wanted a job, so I could have my own money. I’d even fill out applications online, lying about my age but it never worked. A few birthdays went by and I was celebrating my sixteenth birthday and a few weeks later; I received my first retail job. My very first job was at a popular teen store called Aeropostale. I learned and experienced a lot working there and made friends as well. Although, I got what I desired, I often had uncertainties once I really got the feel for the part-time position. In life, people leave and things change and by the end of my employment, I would soon look back and realize it.
Whether these items are necessities or even a splurge item. Trips to the store are made for a reason and when you go there will always be the impulse buyer, the list maker, and the bargain hunter.
