We learn from an early age “never judge a book by it’s cover”. In of Mice and Men we are forced to learn that lesson all over again. Through the use of ambiguous descriptions and the often evasive rhetoric between the characters Steinbeck forces us to look deeper into our perceptions of right, wrong, and the varing shades of gray. Steinbeck uses his creativity and knowledge of writing to show us you can use things such as characters and setting to give an example of a topic. In the book Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck uses characters and setting to convey that sometimes first impressions are wrong. Curlys wife has a very amazing and talented personallity. “She got the eye goin' all the time on everybody”-whit 46 This quote shows that steinbeck uses characters to convey that sometimes first impressions are wrong because whit never talks to her, he assumes. He says she has the eye for everybody but shes just lonely and trying to be friendly. Setting conveys my theme because in a place that has scare of one perticular thing people are going to be byist toward that thing most likly judging off are past in the United states with Racism and womens rights. “'Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain't no place for a girl, 'specially like her” 51 This quote proves my theme because in an enviorment or setting like this with a bunch of guys and scarce amount of women their is gonna be some sort of racism and this is racism to her saying she does not belong. “Why' n't you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs?” -Carlson 61 This proves my claim because, in an eviornment with a bunch of men their will be first impressions that are wrong saying she belongs in a kitchen because she is a “bad person” even though none of the men have actually tried to get to know
