First Generation College Students

The pathway towards college is far from equal for all students. Even though first-generation students are more likely to enter into college with less academic preparation than other students, factors that contribute to their motivation in order to succeed include self-efficacy, perseverance, and adequate support from faculty and peers. Researchers have stated a number of reasons as to why first-generation students aren’t motivated to involve in college-level courses. Throughout this research, students in higher education could benefit from knowing supplementary information regarding motivation towards success among first-generation college students.

The reason stated as to why these students are not able to cope with these situations which deprive them from persevering in many instances is because since they are first-generation students their parents and/or close relatives are not properly equipped to provide the student with information required for college-level courses (Petty 134). In turn, the lack of proper knowledge required for college-level courses causes these students to have “low expectations which are fueled by negativity and doubt” which could potentially lead to lack of perseverance in the student (Macias 20).
