In the two stories, either of the author used foreshadowing as a literature device. In the Heron, the whistle of the ornithologist not only appears at the ornithologist’s first appearance of the story, but also the end of the story, which makes the structure of the story more precise. In the middle of the fire story, “He would be in to camp by six o'clock; a bit after dark” was mentioned while “He was bound for the old claim on the left fork of Henderson Creek, where the boys were already” The foreshadowing echo with each other and tie the whole story together. Furthermore, they all have an outside threat. The ornithologist might shoot the heron and make it a specimen while the man is suffered from the severe cold weather. In the stories both characters have to deal with the danger from outside world. Sylvia has to climb upon the tree to see where the heron is, the man has to avoid the snow falls from the tree. There are also differences in the two stories. Sylvia is at home with the birds, beasts and almost all the creatures in the forest, she regards them as her family members, and the forest as her home. Like the author mentioned, “…but their feet were familiar with the path, and it was no matter whether their eyes could see it or not.” (118) Nevertheless, the man who build the fire is a newcomer with little experience. Sylvia’s grandmother advises her to give the bird’s location for the money which will lead to the death of the bird, whereas the survivor from Sulfur Creek advises the man to have a trail mate, a precaution that will be life-saving. Sylvia’s inner conflict is whether to please the ornithologist who she is in lover with and take the money to pleaser her grandmother or save the heron’s life as she was “wondering over and over again what the stranger would say to her, and what he would think when she told him how to find his way straight to the heron's nest.” (124). On the other hand, the man must fight down panic and the fear of freezing in order to survive as “He cherished the flame carefully and awkwardly. It meant life.”. Besides, the theme of White Heron is selflessness. Sylvia puts the bird first and chooses to not tell the ornithologist the heron’s location to keep its gorgeous singing in her familiar forest by “…and Sylvia cannot speak; she cannot tell the heron's secret and give its life away.”(124). The theme of Build a Fire is the man’s arrogance and the lack of respect for nature. The man who build the fire realizes the nature’s stateliness until the death is coming. The two main characters have different outer conflict. Sylvia’s outer conflict is with the ornithologist and her grandmother, which is person vs. person. “…though the old grandmother fretfully rebukes her, and the young man's kind, appealing eyes are looking straight in her own” (124), while the man’s outer conflict is with the cold weather, which is person vs. nature.

However, it is much more rewarding to try and look for the less obvious differences and find out why they are there and what they mean. For example, one less obvious difference is the bird choice and it happens to represent something larger, in my opinion. In “The White Heron” we see a big and majestic bird that is looked at as a specimen or the epitome of beautiful. However, in “A Caged Bird”, the way the author describes the bird as “an old canary that flits and sings” could possibly be purposeful to the way the author wants us to view it. I personally think that the author wants us to see the bird as old to add meaning to the fact that it is still happy and chipper after all of these years if being caged. The obvious differences between the types of birds that the author used to portray these stories could have more meaning to them then just an image. For example, maybe the author was trying to say that smaller birds, or people who say within themselves and try to make themselves smaller, tend to get caged whereas large and majestic birds, or people who open themselves up to the world, tend to be sought after and viewed as a magnificence. Throughout the late 19th century following the Industrial Revolution, society became focused on urban life and began to neglect the importance of rural society and nature. In “A White Heron” Sarah Orne Jewett, through Sylvia’s decision to protect the heron, contemplates the importance of nature and rural society. In particular, Jewett employs the cow grazing scene to show the importance of and solitude that Sylvia finds in rural life. When the hunter appears and Sylvia accompanies him on his journey to find the bird, his actions and speech reveal the destructiveness of urban society on nature. By presenting the competing sets of industrial and rural values, Jewett's "A White Heron" gives us a rich and textured story that privileges nature over industry. I think the significance of this story is that it gives us an urgent and emphatic view about nature and the dangers that industrial values and society can place upon it and the people who live in it. Still, we are led to feel much like Sylvia. I think we are encouraged to protect nature, cherish our new values and freedoms, and resist the temptations of other influences that can tempt us to destroy and question the importance of the sublime gifts that living in a rural world can bestow upon us.

Nine-year-old Sylvia is a child who lives in the wood. Her name, ‘‘Sylvia,’’ and her nickname, ‘‘Sylvy,’’ come from the Latin silva meaning ‘‘wood’’ or ‘‘forest.’’ Sylvia lives in the middle of the woods with grandma Tilley and hardly sees anyone else. She remembers when she lived in the city but never wants to return there. However, when she comes across a hunter who is an older man, she enjoys being around another human being and is not sure what to do with the conflicting emotions she starts to feel. He offers to give her money in exchange for giving up the nesting spot of the white heron. She is the only person who can give him what he needs. What she has to think about though is the betrayal of her relationship with nature and whether or not it is worth it. In the end, she does not reveal the heron’s nesting place.
The story is about a friendly hunter who comes to a budding girl named Sylvia for help to find a bird for his collection. He offers her ten dollars. At first, she agrees because of the impression the hunter makes on her. Later, she has a revelation through her love for the forest and neglects to tell him where the bird is. Sylvia represents the purity of innocence and has a bond with the natural world. Many of Sylvia’s thoughts are associated with the ability to be free. This exemplifies the women’s rights activism that was happening in the 19th century. Sarah Orne Jewett develops her theme of the change from innocence to experience in her short story “The White Heron” through the use of imagery, characterization, and symbolism.
Mrs. Tilly clearly explains this by saying “There ain’t a foot o’ ground she don’t know er way over, and the wild creaturs counts her one o’ themselves” (Jewett 75). Her oneness with nature allowed those around her to take comfort in her as if she was one of the creatures that resided within the trunks or swamp around her. Mrs. Tilly and the ornithologist seem to recognize that there is hardly no distinction between Sylvia and the natural world. Sylvia is seen as innocent, childlike and easily swayed in the eyes of Mrs. Tilly and the young man; however, she is brave in the presence of nature. “There was the huge tree asleep yet in the paling moonlight, and small and silly Sylvia began with utmost bravery to mount to the top of it…” (Jewett 77). Her natural inclination for the innocence of nature allows her to defy the fear or perhaps control that man seems to have towards nature. Instead Sylvia does not see herself as controlling those around her but to become a part of a group as she did not belong to the growing industrial world. One story tells how a man dying just wants a sip of some water before he dies. How the man had to overcome his fear and make it to the water and bring it back before he dies. The other tells the story of a brave man who got lost out in the cold weather. He had to survive the negative fifty degree temperatures. How he almost killed his dog just to get his hands warm and how much detail the author went into to make the story a better read. The author wanted to make the reader almost feel the pain that he was going through. Both of the stories relate well to the realism era but not as well as “To Build a Fire” does. Imagine having to sit in fifty below temperatures with nothing to keep warm and having to deal with a dog at the same time. That would be very challenging to most people and only the tough and smart could survive those conditions. So, in the beginning of the story, the fire symbolized civilization and hope. However, this was changed when Jack confiscated the fire from Ralph's tribe and used it to help them do more wrongdoings. He set the jungle into fire so that Ralph can burn out. This changed the symbolism of the fire from civilization and hope to evil, savagery, and calamity. However, soon something ironic happened.
Charlotte Brontë's 1847 novel Jane Eyre depicts the passionate love Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester have for each other, and as Bertha Mason stands in the way of the happiness of Brontë's heroine, the reader sees Mason as little more than a villainous demon and a raving lunatic. Jean Rhys' serves as Mason's defendant, as the author's 1966 novella Wide Sargasso Sea, a prequel to Jane Eyre, seeks to explore and explain Bertha's (or Antoinette Cosway's) descent into madness. Rhys rejects the notion that Antoinette has been born into a family of lunatics and is therefore destined to become one herself. Instead, Rhys suggests that the Cosways are sane people thrown into madness as a result of oppression. Parallels are drawn between Jane and Antoinette in an attempt to win the latter the reader's sympathy and understanding. Just as they did in Jane Eyre, readers of Wide Sargasso Sea bear witness to a young woman's struggle to escape and overcome her repressive surroundings. Brontë makes heavy use of the motif of fire in her novel and Rhys does the same in Wide Sargasso Sea. In Rhys' novella, fire represents defiance in the face of oppression and the destructive nature of this resistance.
“Common Fire – Leading lives of Commitment in a Complex World” is an influential book whose meaning is traced by an absolute equilibrium between research and narration. It is the vision and the inspiration that it provides to the reader that makes it more than just a book to read in order to get credit for a class. The title of the book itself is powerful by putting “common” and “fire” together. The books suggests, previously to reading the first page that we should all be aware, concerned of what’s “burning” around us and take action.
He enamors her with his knowledge of birds, yet she does not understand why he wants to kill something so dear to him. The hunter’s yearning for his prize heron is symbolic of males domination in society and his collection of birds as the symbol for what he is willing to destroy to gain that prize and intends on exploiting Sylvia’s knowledge to gain that prize. The infatuation that Sylvia is beginning to feel for the hunter begins to give her a sense of guilt as she has allowed him to infiltrate her beloved forest. However she tells herself as long as she follows and does not lead him and remains fairly quiet she will not betray nature or the heron. Befriending the hunter awakens feelings in her that overshadow her dedication to nature and being it’s protector.
