The value of keeping family members together as one is a struggle. There are many families today that are still doing traditional events to celebrate one another's accomplishments. In the movie Soul Food, it tells the story of a big African-American family from Chicago. Although each family member displayed love for one another, trust was broken when a family member slept around with another family member's spouse. Soul Food displayed how black families stay in constant communication over large family dinners. During slavery black folks did not have a whole lot to celebrate, but they loved one another with warm hearts. Since many wanted to show love, cooking became a way to express love for one another. On October 14th, 2016 in class we watched “Two Spirits” by Lydia Nibley. Basically the film explored the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder of the main character. Fred was part of an honored “Navajo” youth who was killed at the age of sixteen by a man who bragged to his friends that he was nothing but a “fag”. While walking home from a carnival he was chased by one of his friends. Once his friend caught up to Fred, he pulled him down from a mountain and smashed his head with a heavy rock. Fred laid there for five days straight where two young boys found his body lying there. He was labeled as a “two-spirit” who was possessed of balancing masculine and feminine traits. I have decided to write about the foreign film called "Divines". It is about a girl named Madunia and her best friend named Maui. They are brought up in the violent and poor area in Thailand and turn to selling narcotics for a drug dealer to make money. All through out the movie it shows the experiences that they both went through from their point of view. But one of the characters that experienced acculturation was Teri or Auntie Teri, who was the Aunt of the main character and narrator of the film. Teri, who was one of three sisters in the film, was the most successful sister in her family as far as financial stature. Teri 's parents moved to Chicago, after hardships of discrimination they faced as African Americans in Mississippi. Their meals of fresh vegetables that they were used to were now being replaced by the thrown away scrapes of food from the plantation house. The other day I watched a movie… it's called “ What's eating Gilbert Grape”. The movie was really good, although it was like two hours long and it was a drag. Yet the movie kept me asking myself, what's going to happen next, yet maybe that's just me because I’m always asking myself that during a movie(or book). The movie received seven Oscar nominations and which won three including best actor for Roberto Benigni. Critics describe the film as a soul touching masterpiece, and genius film. The films can be divided in two parts; the first part tells the love story of Guido a carefree Jew waiter and bookkeeper, and Dora a rich non-Jew school teacher. The second part of the film is about the holocaust using comedy and satire; getting mixed reviews for this reason accusing the film of lack of realism and connection to historical events. Benigni’s idea of using comedy and satire to cover the horrors of the holocaust contrast with the characters making sacrifices in the name of love.
