The film Memento is classified as a Detective film of a Baroque genre stage. Many aspects of the film relating to the plot, the characters, and how it was edited show evidence to that fact. One of the ways in which the movie differs from other films of the same genre is that the main character, Leonard, is trying to solve the mystery but he has a memory impairment which makes it difficult for him to remember what his mission is. His condition makes it so that in this movie he is essentially trying to solve a mystery that he has already figured out but can’t remember doing so. If everything were completely CGI in movies, eventually the novelty of it would wear out and audiences would tire of the unrealistic perfection from everything being made by a computer. One of the reasons people enjoy watching movies is because the characters, their journey, and their struggles resonate with the audience. Misc-en-scene is everything that shown in a scene such as the location, the actors, the props and their placement, the lighting, the framing of the scene, and the camerawork. Cinematography has to do with how close or how far a scene is shot, what angle it is shot from, and if the camera moves or is stationary while filming. In the parlor scene from the movie Psycho, the lighting, the camera angles and the placement of certain props tell a lot about the characters. For example, Marion’s face is engulfed in light while Norman’s face is hidden in shadows. This makes Marion appear as if she is illuminated because she is the trustworthy one in this scene as opposed to Norman since the shadows make him seem menacing. Also the way Marion is framed by innocuous objects such as the lamp and the food tray allude to her being normal. In contrast, Norman has two large birds framing him and one of them even looks ready to attack with its wings spread out and its head facing directly towards the camera. This hints at Norman being like the birds, a predator that is biding its time until it can attack its prey. Lastly, the camera is angled normally when Marion is shown but when it’s focused on Norman, it is angled so it looks like the viewer is looking up at him from below which gives him the illusion of having power. As I mentioned earlier, the clutter in the Gunderson’s home does speak volumes about who they are as people. Well very proud and honest people, they are very flawed and blue collar. This clutter is continued on in the kitchen. The shelf behind the kitchen table is filled with pictures and other nick-nacks. This clutter is eerily reminiscent of the middle class household portrayed by the MacGuff’s in the film Juno. These families both are not going to make sure everything in their home is pristine, but their way of life is really not too uncommon. It really does embody a lot of blue collar America. Another good use of mise en scene in this sequence was the very gray and desolate skyline during the murder investigation. Murder obviously is not a light topic, so the dark atmosphere in the sky very much fits into the theme of this scene. The last thing I’d like to mention about mise en scene and staging takes me back to the opening zoom of this sequence. Along with the visual theatrics zoom, the sudden appearance of nondiegetic music also insinuates this is quite an important scene in the film. Once we hear the dramatic strings, we know something dramatic is about to happen, especially because the music is clearly not coming from something on the screen. The mise en scenes in this film are unique because it gave viewers the ability to have a sense of how the characters are feeling. For example, low lighting was used throughout the film to express a sense of the unknown and/or fear. Wendy and Lucy does not present a large amount of background story information, for instance, the scene where Wendy calls her brother may cause some viewers to wonder about their strained relationship and his role in Wendy’s current financial situation. Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.

Literally, it is what we actually see on the screen – locations, sets, background details, costumes, even the use of colour and lighting. Mise en scene is used to describe every scene, including framing, composition, costuming, setting, objects, lighting, sound and camera angles. Everything is done purposely and intentionally.

Mise-en-scene is all about the film staging, all that is visible in front of the camera and all its design included; trim, music, clothing, environment, camera movements, makeup etc. Every director in the world uses their own different kind of techniques when making movies, and it is very common that a director becomes famous and well-known just because of that; their own style of making movies. As directors worldwide are working in different ways, and using their own, special style, they also use ”mise-en-scene” in different ways.

Any smiles or excitement not motivated by direction were utilized and helped keep with the movies themes. When Mr. Smith brings about the conflict of the family having to move despite their wish to stay, almost immediately the family members disperse and leave him to himself.

Most often this type of amnesia is caused by damage to the brain. Leonard was unable to keep any his memories after the injury he sustained. There was irreparable damage to his hippocampus. The hippocampus is the part of the brain associated with the formation of new episodic memories. Episodic memories are at type of long-term memory that involved the recalling of specific events and the experiences tied to them. Any common movie, such as Inside Out, shows Mise-en-snéne in it. Three big parts of Mise-en-scéne that are shown in the movie Inside Out are cinematography, sound, and editing. Inside Out uses all of these by describing a plot in which there are feelings in our brains which connect to different memories that we can remember at any time. Memento is a very different kind of movie than what’s normally expected, a movie that makes you question the reality of ones memory. The movie is set in two ways: one in black and white and the other one in color, where black and white is shown chronologically and color is demonstrated in reverse order. The main character, Leonard suffers from anterograde amnesia but he is still determined to find the man who raped and killed his wife one night, as believed by Leonard. He tries to organize the world around him using notes, tattoos and Polaroid pictures. The audience tries to figure out the story through the “facts” that is given via the protagonist. We know just as much the main character is aware of. It is a movie that screws with your mind every time we come closer to the “truth” but the question is: is it really the truth or a made up memory by the character to make himself happy?
Computer Generated Imagery began with awkward and dull effects in the early 1980’s. The 1982 film “Tron” was a desperate attempt from Disney to jump on the CGI bandwagon and start a revolution in film making technologies (imdb.com). Although this film showed an attempt at something that had never been done before in the history of cinematics, it was weird and confusing. This broke the door down for other companies to start up and aid films in creating better and better effects that appealed to a larger market. Although the effects were not good in the early days, the general film going public was astonished by computer generated effects and flocked to the theaters to see these cheesy attempts to use basic technology that did not transfer well to the silver screen. It was not until later films like “Jurassic Park,” “Toy Story,” and “The Lord of the Rings” until CGI became a film making powerhouse and the killer application for high budget movies.
