Both, Ace Ventura and School of Rock, propose comedy from the outset; even the titles and movie covers are comedic. Setting up pretend worlds creates distance for the audience, allowing them to laugh at the comedies. In Ace Ventura, the main character, Ace Ventura, is a pet detective hired to find a missing dolphin kidnapped before the Super Bowl. This concept suggests absurdity at both the ridiculousness of someone kidnapping a dolphin and a private pet detective being hired to find it. This concept also sets up a lot of jokes throughout the movie; Ace has a special bond with animals and in several scenes acts like an animal. At no point is the concept of the movie taken seriously by the audience so the outrageousness of Ace’s character and his actions are cartoon-like.

School of Rock is a funny, feel-good movie that I could watch over and over and I really like the Jack Black persona. He comes across as a regular guy, no better or more special than the average person, though he is obviously musically talented and very funny. If I want to laugh hysterically though, I am going to watch Ace Ventura. This is a surprising answer, because I am not a big fan of slapstick comedy in general. It is the physical comedy genius of Jim Carrey that makes the movie for me. I really like the multiple use of parodies and impersonations in Ace Ventura as well. Because of the continuous jokes and gags the comedy flows and there is no part where I found the movie dragging or slow. The fact that there is no message in Ace Ventura is also appealing. That Ace is a quirky and successful character that does not have to grow up is refreshing. It is fun to see the weird guy win without conforming; in this way Ace Ventura is also a smart satire so maybe there is a slight
