The film was “ Bolinao 52” was very heart-rending. I can’t imagine going through such a horrifying experience. The film showed what mental and physical endurance actually means. There were people who committed cannibalism just to survive. The refugees had nothing left but hope and a strong belief in faith. This film looks into the hope outlook during desperation. This film really demonstrated what it is like to an outsider wanting to come to the U.S. By watching this film I definitely developed more compassion and forgiveness. When reading chapter six it gave me a better understanding about individualism, collectivism, uncertainty avoidance and etc. When looking at table 6.6 uncertainty avoidance ranking for 50 countries it shows that the
In his documentary Classified X, Martin Van Peebles describes three areas where African-Americans could be receive some sanctuary from the racism that pervaded almost all Hollywood films. These three places were: the Hollywood version of an all-Black film, the church, and entertainment. Black culture and music is prominent in mainstream society, but the people behind this culture don’t always receive recognition and respect for their creations. Mainstream White pop culture excitedly consumes and appropriates Black culture, but disrespects the source.
For me I found that to this day, the Native Americans still lead a rough life due to what the white man has done to them in the past. However, instead of buckling under the pressure of centuries, much of their culture still struggles and lives on inside each successive generation. I would recommend this movie to anyone, and I'm sure that I will end up sending it to my family back home. Not only would I recommend watching the movie, but I would urge all to see beneath the surface story and find the hidden messages underneath.
The movie Crash educates the viewers on the effects of racism, and the negativity it places in our society. The interpersonal communication that was played out throughout the movie, made me more conscientiously aware, of how I interact with different ethnicities, so as not to offend
For several years now, Disney seems to be determined not to offend anyone in order to keep its audience; indeed we are confronted with animation films full of compromises; they are not as degrading for women as Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves (1937), but they are nonetheless still filled with clichés. Films such as The Princess and The Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Wreck-it Ralph (2012), have in common the sense of being progressive and however we can notice the resurgence of harmful gendered stereotypes on the subjects of the social scale, women’s role in society, or the status quo. Frozen comes in and turns out to be no exception. Though it includes several encouraging and gratifying elements, it contributes insidiously to spread numerous
?Life Is Beautiful? gives the audience a vivid look into what happened during the Holocaust. Roberto Benigni plays a very upbeat, carefree bookstore owner. His wife, who is not Jewish, and his son are forced into a concentration camp. They are deported on a train with many other Jews. From the point the get to the camp, Benigni shows the audience what it was like for the Jews. During selection, his wife is separated from him and his son, along with his uncle. The movie shows the Jews working where there are hot furnaces having to haul around heavy objects all day. It also shows the German?s being cruel in a verbal way to the Jews. At one point in the movie, Benigni returns late to his bunk where his son is waiting. Another man in the bunk informs Benigni that everyone was nervous he would not return. This shows the fear that the Jews had to live with every day while they were contained in the concentration camps. This would be good ...
I chose to view the movie Lion, a movie based on the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. This movie is about a five-year-old boy, Saroo, living in a poor, rural area of India. Saroo convinces his older brother Guddu, to let him tag along and find work in a nearby city. Saroo ends up trapped and alone in a decommissioned passenger train that takes him to Calcutta, over 1,000 miles away from his home. Saroo spent three weeks as a street child, struggling to survive and facing many challenges along the way.
The film deals heavily on the subject of immigration and deportation surrounding, inside the film there are scenes where there are immigrates inside of cages due to them being caught and being departed. The sad thing about this is most immigrates who are in the cage suffered so many depressing and horrific things from where they are from that the thought of being in this new place shows them a completely different life and it gives them a sense of hope, “Poor refugees; after escaping the worst atrocities and
The gangster genre is notorious for depicting women as dependent, sexualized objects. However, in Johnny Stecchino we are not introduced to Maria in that context at all. While most women are absent from the main conflicts in this genre, Maria is at the forefront. She is the mastermind behind the entire plot to fool the mafia into thinking Dante is Johnny Stecchino. She takes the initiative and inserts herself into the main conflict, thus completely changing the norm for women in gangster films. The only time we see Maria conform to the typical gangster film customs is when she deals interacts with Johnny in the beginning and middle of the film. Johnny initiates sexual contact with her, but slaps her away when she tries to kiss him and she
I chose to watch Dad’s in Heaven with Nixon. The documentary was about Chris Murray a man who was born with autism. His brother who he referred to as Tommy tells the history of their family. The family grew up wealthy having a beautiful house in Southampton, New York and going on the beach every day to swim. While they looked like the perfect family in their pictures they were far from it. Three generations of Murray’s struggled with alcoholism and bipolar disorder. They struggled with their family relationships mostly among the Tom Murray and his dad and then Chris and his father. His mother Janice who just passed away in August was his saving grace and rock. While searching for medical options for her son they repeatedly told her he would never have a chance and that the best option would be to put him in a home. Instead Janice and her family worked hard to make sure Chris lived a normal life.
This was a very troubling yet inspiring documentary. I can’t fathom 27,000 people, five to ten years old, parentless and just walking, BAREFOOT. These poor kids look so hungry, I’ve never seen legs so skinny. However, it brought me comfort knowing the boys formed makeshift families to take care of one another. And it’s pretty remarkable to hear that 11 year olds were capable of taking care of the young (not like they had a choice). I found the bond within their society beautiful. I was disturbed to find out that after traveling 1,000 miles, they lost an absurd amount of lives due to lack of food and water- 1,200 is the new number of lost boys. I also thought it was really interesting that they call themselves “skinny”, a term I thought only Americans used; One of the men then lifts his shirt to reveal a six pack! He points about 12-16 inches out and says he wants to be that big around. He values weight, for weight means nourishment. It’s crazy the things we take for granted. Also- I was shocked to see that men will actually hide from the others when they cook because it’s something t...
I chose to analyze Despicable Me, an animated film geared towards a younger audience, because I was interested in examining underlying theories and messages that this film would be relaying to its viewers. Often times, when watching animated films, children are not aware of these messages, as they are absorbed by the characters, special effects, and humor. But as we have learned throughout this semester, our brains are subconsciously primed by the various surroundings we are exposed to. Since we also studied the impacts of entertainment, such as television and video games, on children, I wanted to see how a popular children’s film might also affect them.
In the film My Neighbor Totoro, Satsuki and her family go through a great deal of changes in their lives. These recent changes cause them oodles of stress. Every person in the family gets through the stressful changes in different ways. Satsuki’s dad gets through them by trying to spend more time at home instead of always being away at work. Mei, Satsuki’s sister, deals with her stressful feelings by trying to spend all of her time with Satsuki. Satsuki attempts to get through the stress by trying to simply ignore it. She tries to distract herself from the entire situation that her family is enduring by consuming herself with other aspects of her life. This causes her multitudes of issues throughout the film, and it eventually causes her more stress than she originally was dealt with. The Totoros come into the movie in order to give Satsuki’s life an alternative, stress-free environment. They also provide a
The film Apocalypto directed by Mel Gibson is a depiction on how the Mayan and other mesoamerican tribes conflicted throughout time. The movie opens with Jaguar Paw the main protagonist who is on a hunt with his fellow tribesmen for food. Throughout this sequence they show teamwork and acrobatic skills showing off the dynamics of hunting. After they hunt they encounter a passing tribe whose village was just raided telling Jaguar that they are coming creating fear which is essentially the theme of the movie. Upon return we see a warm family like feel that everyone in the tribe has. Everyone knows and loves each other expressing the love between family, that night they feast and pray that fear does not exist and no one should be afraid. The next
