Academic Culture in Movies I watched the movie Animal House; it gave me an interesting perspective on academic life in the 1960’s. The movie follows two friends Lawrence "Larry" Kroger and Kent Dorfman, as they try to gain acceptance from a fraternity at Faber College in 1962. The movie starts off with Larry and Kent going to a social event at one of the better fraternities on campus the Omegas. The Omegas are the snooty, uptight, rich fraternity. Larry and Kent are not like them and find themselves uncomfortable but try their best to fit in. They are made fun of and they leave disappointed without a bid. They head over the Delta Tau Chi House where Kent’s brother used to be a member making Kent a legacy. There they meet John "Bluto" Blutarsky, who seems to be a little crazy. Delta Tau Chi offers the boys a bid because they need the due money. We next are introduced to the main protagonist Dean Vernon Wormer. The dean dislikes the Delta’s and there party attitude. The Delta house is already on probation so the dean puts them on double secret probation. He enlists the president of t...
The Australian film institute has been seeking recommendations on what Australian film should be included in an international Australian Film festival in late 2016. The inclusion of the film Red Dog should be definite and I am here to persuade you why. Released in 2011, Red dog is the retold story of the Pilbara wanderer. However this wanderer was not a human, he was a Kelpie that touched the hearts of many throughout Western Australia. Director Kriv Stenders has taken the true story of Red Dog and recreated it into a heart jerking film. During the film viewers are exposed to the history,
The theatrical film The Lion In Winter stars Peter O’Toole as King Henry II, and Katharine Hepburn as his wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Adapted from his stage play of the same title, author James Goldman provides a fictional, but plausible, account of intra-family deceit and political conniving within the large and powerful Angevin Empire, which spanned much of the land that is now Britain, and much of what is now Northeastern France, within the medieval world. Directed and edited by Anthony Harvey, the story, set in the winter of 1183, details the succession crisis faced by the aging King Henry II, as his three surviving sons vie for the crown, and Queen Eleanor plots, both with and against them, to regain her freedom, and become the power behind the throne occupied by her choice of successor. King Philip of France patiently waits, seeking political advantage within the internal fracturing, for the opportunity to destroy the Kingdom that Henry II has worked a lifetime to build.
The film was about a group of people trying to survive the night against an undead horde. It first showed us a brother and a sister, Barbra and Johnny. They are visiting their father’s grave. Johnny rants about how this is a waste of time and acts very poorly in the cemetery. They are attacked by a zombie and Barbra leaves Johnny behind. She finds a farmhouse and runs inside, hiding from the zombie. Soon after, she goes outside and a new character named Ben is introduced. He helps board up the entire house to hold out for the night. He routinely lit things on fire and threw them in front of the porch, keeping the zombies at bay. Ben tried asking Barbra questions but she was no help. She wouldn’t talk about anything or explain her story to Ben. After barring up the windows and doors they are safe for some time. Now the rest of the characters are introduced,
Money. Cash Money. The thing that people will go to extreme lengths for, the object that will bring a person to their knees in the face of life because it has so much power and control over everyone who uses it. In the hit series, Breaking Bad, the program has a large variety of twists, topics and lenses that could be discussed in this assignment. However, I will be discussing the socio-economic lens due to the dominant roles that the producers had money play on the characters, the choices that they make and the results of many outcomes within the program while practically ignoring the main storyline of the show, which is a former highly chemist using his knowledge to become a drug lord in the making and selling of methamphetamine.
*Hunt for the Wilderpeople* builds on Waititi 's drama/comedy combination and further cements his auteur status. *Wilderpeople* is about an orphan boy who moves from one foster family to another, generally being a delinquent. This causes him to earn the title of "a real bad egg". The majority of the film takes place as Ricky Baker is on the run through the vast forest. While structurally different than *Boy*, both films deal with coming-of-age, parents, and loneliness. Unlike *Boy*, *Wilderpeople* is divided up into ten chapters and an epilogue. Despite this, *Boy* is the more episodic film. Since *Wilderpeople* relies more on a causal narrative, it seems more like a standard Hollywood film at first. But Waititi finds a way to make it his own.
I chose to view the movie Lion, a movie based on the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. This movie is about a five-year-old boy, Saroo, living in a poor, rural area in India. Saroo convinces his older brother Guddu, to let him tag along and find work in a nearby city. Saroo ends up trapped and alone in a decommissioned passenger train that takes him to Calcutta, over 1,000 miles away from his home.
Who would have thought that racism, the War on Drugs and governmental corruption would have any correlation with a PG movie produced by Disney? The words Disney, drugs, racism and corruption typically are not put under the same category. But, as oxymoronic as this unrelated quartet may seem, its constituents do have a relationship with one another. The link can be found in a fictitious animal city known as Zootopia. Although it is an animated children’s movie, Zootopia is intended for people of all ages, not just children. This film production is unique because it engages two vastly different audiences and keeps them both involved and entertained. Within Zootopia’s script, there is a hoard of events and comparisons that allow serious adults
Suspense is a major genre used in the most American pop culture movies. Alfred Hitchcock and James Mangold pioneered numerous movie techniques of building suspense in the films they direct. Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) and Mangold’s Identity (2003) are movies that vividly exhibit the use of different film techniques in creating suspense. Both movies make use of various film techniques that aid in the attainment of a thrilling mood to the audience.
The Artist is a delicately crafted love letter to the era of silent film. Hazanavicius managed to blend the traditional and the contemporary, a challenging endeavor, which the lead character of the film himself struggles with. In the ever-evolving world of art, creators are forced to adapt, or risk fading into obscurity. Technology may seem to be the antithesis of tradition, but as proven both by the plot of the movie and its technical execution, they are both necessary in creating a truly revolutionary work of art. In this film, George represents the traditional. He is the beloved silent film star, a household name, who resists change and loses everything. Peppy, his counterpart, embraces the “talkies”. It’s this modern open-mindedness that
Our most primal emotion is that of fear. And the eeriest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown. Is that not what horror cinema is all about? All sub-genre of horror, have one thing in common, the power to effectively communicate the apprehension of the something. It could be a ghost, a demon, an aberration of the supernatural or even the monstrosity of human nature. This list comprises of horror movies which were considered landmarks in this celebrated genre. They have been chosen and ranked on the basis of originality of ideas, the accompanying visual and sound effects and the work of actors and directors.
The theme of this film is high concept. There are three main messages to the audience. They are about appearance, compassion, and family love.
While I watched a lot of horror/thriller genre movies as teenager, I rarely partake in them anymore. The trend of incorporating more demonic and satanic themes has put a bad taste in mouth, and I want no part of such things. Suspense filled monster movies? Now that’s a different story. I really enjoy films that don’t immediately dip into the bucket of spirituality to get a cheap scare. So, as you can imagine, when I saw the trailer for the John Krasinksi’s (co-wrote, directed, and starred) new film A Quiet Place I was immediately intrigued and foresaw a fun night at the movies.
The Lion King is a work of art, giving countless children and generations the knowledge and lessons that are needed in their life. The Lion King was released in 1994 and was directed by Roger Allers. This is classified as an animated epic/musical, and rightfully so! Some of the main actors and actresses in this film are Matthew Broderick, who plays Simba, and Rowan Atkinson, who plays Zazu. “This film takes place in the Pride Lands of Africa, King Mufasa, the ruling lion and Queen Sarabi present their new-born son Simba; the new heir of the throne, to the animals of pride rock. Simba’s Uncle; Scar, is fueled by anger and rage due to being unable to take over the throne, and plots to kill Mufasa and Simba to take his place as King. Scar causes

Let me take you back to 2002. The setting is a large room, filled with stern faced men in suits. Sitting in front of them is a bright red, fuzzy puppet, named Elmo. This may seem silly, but there was a purpose behind this. Elmo was in front of congress in order to talk about music education in schools. By doing so, Elmo became the only non-human to testify before congress. Sesame Street uses songs and colorful puppets, to tackle tough issues, and to teach a message of tolerance and acceptance to people across the world.
