In the eyes of a non-religious person, the figure of Satan might appear as an obsolete, mythical character of an antiquated view of the world. However, upon immersing oneself in the study of this persona, one can observe the strong belief in its power and the influence that the figure of Satan represents in the religious world. One might wonder how such a feat is possible even after hordes of scientists and academics objected to the existence of such a fabled character. The Satan was able to retain his strong influence over the population due to the immutable presence of evil in the world and the strong need to separate that evil from God as well as to explain the presence of evil in a cosmos supposedly created by a benevolent God. A look at the roots of the figure of Satan can explain its lasting persistence. In simpler words, the figure of Satan is the scapegoat of Christianity, the guy we blame when something goes wrong, the person we say he made us do it when we are in trouble and the one we associate all the people we do not trust, or simply dislike, to. The Devil is the guy we love to hate. As the religion grew older the many facets of the Devil developed as well. The characteristics of the Satan came from the Bible, theology and popular religion. From the horns that symbolize his higher status to his hooved feet inspired by the Greek Deity Pan, God of the wilderness, the image of Satan is an amalgam of traits taken from the fears of all humanity. The colour of his skin is most often described as red, reminiscent of a raging fire symbolizing our lack of control and the impending destruction that comes from it. Darkness and the colour black are also present in most, if not all, of the descriptions of the Satan representing the void or chaos that comes from evil . Moreover, they both expresses the unknown, a concept that has long and is still terrifying most of the humanity; for example, hate crimes mostly come from ignorance and fear of an unknown subject. In addition, his bottom is described as that of a goat with cloven feet and furry legs is a parallel to the Greek god Pan as expressed earlier which brings us to the wilderness and once again the concept of the unknown. Satan aspires to rise above God in power, yet his ambition makes him unable to recognize the impossibility of such desires. Satan’s lofty position as God’s second-in-command raises his ambition: “lifted up so high/ I sdeined subjection, and thought one step higher/ Would set me highest” (Milton 4.49-51). The angel’s ambition drives his hope for absolute power and convinces him that he could fulfill such grandiose desires. However, God is unequalled in supremacy and can never be defeated; his absolute dominance renders Satan’s hopes futile. The angel will never be able to challenge God’s power, let alone defeat the omnipotent. Still, Satan is overly ambitious and thus blind to the impossibility of defeating God. Satan’s ambition parallels to the monster’s desperation for love in Shelley’s Frankenstein. Prior to open practice of Satanism, the Roman Catholic church used Satanism as a label for individuals and groups who held views or ideologies that conflicted with those of the church. This was an attempt to delegitimize their opponents and to strengthen the Church’s following. While these accusations were initially harmless and limited to heretics, they became increasingly frequent and extreme. These wild accusations spread to rumors of violent rituals claimed to be performed by Satanists which built up to widespread fear and panic. Ultimately, this would result in events like the Salem Witch Trials where innocent people were put to death due to false suspicion of individuals performing witchcraft and becoming possessed by the Devil. Ironically, while the church merely intended to bolster both its image and following with these accusations, the widespread panic that resulted put Satanism on the map, and “several scholars identify fundamentalist Christianity as one of the major influences shaping and driving the” onset of the Satanist movement (Underwager and Wakefield, 281). This sheds light on the true relationship between the conflicting belief systems of Christianity and Satanism. The question of identity regarding God and the Devil has been an ongoing dilemma for religious philosophers. No true identity can be formed due to the lack of undeniable evidence surrounding the figures. In addition, it has always been difficult to relate either characters to tangible or worldly matter; seeing how both are non-perceivable and equivocal figments in our minds. A start is to relate these supernatural beings to each other. The abilities of each are in contrast; God can create but not control, whereas, the Devil can control but not create. Creation is the act of making new matter, whereas the act of controlling is forcing matter to act based on the wishes of the controller.
Satan is an allegorical representation of God the Father. Both Satan and God are seen as Father figures; God as the Father of all that is virtuous, and Satan as the Father of all that is wicked. Just as God is the King of heaven, Satan claims himself King of Hell. God is the originator of Goodness, as Satan is the originator of Evilness. All in all, Satan is a perverse representation of God.

Milton’s Satan in Paradise Lost is a complex character meant to be the evil figure in the epic poem. Whenever possible Satan attempts to undermine God and the Son of God who is the true hero of the story. Throughout the story Milton tells the readers that Satan is an evil character, he is meant not to have any redeeming qualities, and to be shown completely as an unsympathetic figure. Satan’s greatest sins are pride and vanity in thinking he can overthrow God, and in the early part of the poem he is portrayed as selfish while in Heaven where all of God’s angels are loved and happy. Satan’s journey starts out as a fallen angel with great stature, has the ability to reason and argue, but by Book X the anguish and pain he goes through is more reason for him to follow an evil path instead. Even so, Milton uses literal and figurative imagery in the description of Satan’s character to manipulate the reader’s response to the possibility that Satan may actually be a heroic figure. As the plot of the story unfolds there are moments where the reader can identify with Satan’s desires and relate to his disappointments.
At the beginning of the poem, Satan is viewed as a very majestic angel of great stature and an even bigger leadership skill. However, Christians also believe that Satan is another being that exists that is out to turn them away from God. In this section of My Name is Red the reader gets a chance to read from the perspective of Satan. It is interesting to read this and compare Pamuk’s writing of Satan and the experiences that Satan experiences in his chapter to the Satan that I believe in as a Christian. The Satan that Christians believe in is a hubris being that was cast from Heaven because he defied God and convinced man to turn away from him.
