Poetry in the modern world is found most commonly among song lyrics. These song lyrics have different poetic values due to a certain quantity of specific items. This poetic value is called poetic merit; this is the measure of how poetic a poem is. I believe that the song “Rebel Son” by Survivor has a moderate amount of poetic merit because it has a variety of figurative language, detailed imagery, and a clear thematic statement. Figurative language is a key part of any poem. It adds detail in unique ways, compares non-idealistic things, and adds emphasis to make a poem a poem.
