One reason why authors do this is by using symbolism and figurative language. These can be demonstrated in many ways, and they may not be obvious the first time we read something. I personally enjoy books that use a lot of symbolism and figurative language because I feel it helps in understanding and it also helps to make a more in-depth interpretation of the literature. Symbolism is when an author uses a person, word, or object to represent another thing that is not its literal meaning. Using symbolism adds more depth to the literature, which helps to engage readers. Symbolism is used in all kinds of literature, such as books, speeches, poems, and stories. It is commonly used to demonstrate complex and abstract ideas in a subtle way that is easier to understand. Metaphors and Allegories are commonly used to create symbolism. I feel that symbolism is very important in literature, it is used a lot in all my favorite books. One of my favorite stories, “The Great Gatsby”, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism as a big part of the story. The story starts out with us meeting the main character, Nick, who has just moved to town. We then met his cousin, Daisy. During the summer, Nick gets invited to his neighbor Gatsby’s party. While there, he meets Gatsby, a young mysterious man. The plot of the story starts with meeting the main character and most of his friends. We then learn that he has had a crush on the popular girl since they were kids. One night, she shows up at his window and asks him to help her do a few things. They then go and get revenge on all her old friends that did her wrong, then when going to school the next day the main character doesn't see her. She leaves him clues to find out where she is so that he knows she's fine and isn’t in danger. He then sets out with his friends to find her. They find her, and he realizes he doesn’t need her because they want different things. In this book, the term paper town is a symbol, paper towns are towns that aren’t real, but they are on maps so that they don’t get copyrighted. This is a symbol of making your life about something that isn’t real. The main character spent most of his senior year of high school finding the girl he loves, even though she doesn’t want to be found. He bases this whole situation on the false pretense that she loves him back the way he loves her. I enjoyed reading this book! I feel that this use of symbolism does something else than help people understand. I feel that this use is to add more to the story, more layers and more mystery. Throughout the whole book, we don’t know where she is or whether he is going to find her or not. This symbolism in my opinion is brought up towards the beginning
