In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare conveys the idea of love and hatred and these polar opposites connecting together. Shakespeare shows these ideas through symbolism, figurative language, and imagery. Shakespeare tells the story of two young teenagers from feuding families that fall in love. Romeo and Juliet is the most popular play about love, even today.
Symbolism is used to portray these ideas. Hatred can be symbolized by thumb biting, when the feuding family bites their thumb towards each other is a way of showing hatred. Night can symbolize love because it hides and protects the secret lovers. Every important scene happens in the dark, therefore daylight can also show that everything bad happens in the day. The two lovers concerns are not with the wishes of their warring families, they just want to be together “Deny thy father and refuse thy name / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn by my love / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.34-36). Love is the first theme Shakespeare displays in this play.

Furthermore, by the end of the play the reader sees how love defeats the shock of death and how Romeo and Juliet’s love ends the ancient feud between the Capulets and Montagues. Using these three events, the reader sees Shakespeare’s message of how love can conquer all. In the desperate battle between love and hate, Shakespeare believes love to be the more powerful force in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is a romantic love story about a young lad named Romeo who has fallen in love with Lady Juliet, but is unable to marry her because of a long-lasting family feud.
