Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

These days the money and personnel that go into creating a movie is scandalous. It is almost unbelievable that every time they don’t come out with anything less than a classic. Luckily this is true in the case of "Ferris Buller’s Day Off", which features some of the best casted actors for a long time and costs in the region of $5.8 million. Luckily, it is fantastic - and this is why.

Firstly, the script and plot were skilfully crafted creating superb film. Set in a Chicago were high school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Boderick) tricks his parents into thinking that he is unwell and unable to attend school because he wants to spend a day in downtown Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane (the beautiful Mia Sara)

and his Depressive best friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck). He skilfully avoids Edward Rooney his school principle who is out to bust him (Jeffrey Jones), his resentful sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey), and his reserved parents.

At first it seems that Ferris is just skipping school for a bit of fun borrowing his best friend’s dads Ferrari.

The film follows Ferris’s excursion through Chicago, visiting tourist landmarks including lunch at a fancy restaurant were the teens fake there identity, they then visit the art gallery were they critique the finest art works, and then go to watch a baseball game, they visit the Sears towers were they lean against the glass and take in the serene view, Ferris starts a conversation about Cameron’s low self –respect which is the underlying theme of the film.

Ferris preachers to Cameron about how "Life goes by so fast," "that if you don't stop and look around, you might miss it." Ferris is careful not to hurt his friend's heart.

The director John Hughes executed the film fantastically. Even though the storyline is rather childish the film has a great underlying theme, to encourage Cameron to gain self-respect for himself and to stand up to his materialistic father. Chicago, Chicago! The director has definitely highlighted the monuments and landmarks of Chicago which made the film more spectacular, and if by chance the film was not a huge success it would always be good advertising for Chicago. Matthew Broderick played Ferris to perfection because he was funny, clever and very cocky, even though he was in his 20’s he looked 18 which was a real relief.

Surprisingly executed

Towards the end there were some intense scenes which lead up to the excitement. Disappointingly though, the film ends badly. There are just too many questions raised and not enough answered. Approach this film for a bit of fun not as a lesson in the facts of life, just a bit of childish fun. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a well-executed film with a simple storyline but a heart touching theme.
