Fernand Mondego, the Ultimate Betrayer
Characters as well as people in real life often forget about others and worry only about
their self accomplishments. In the astounding novel, T​he Count of Monte Cristo,​by Alexandre Dumas, Edmond Dantés is betrayed by several characters as he is sent off to prison for something he did not do. Fernand Mondego not only betrays Edmond, but also betrays Haydee, the count’s slave and lover. In the novel, Fernand Mondego acts as the ultimate betrayer because he is envious of Edmond for his happy life and killing Haydée’s father.

Haydee loves her father and blames Fernand for his death, “‘I was four years old. But, since the events were supremely important to me, I have not forgotten a single detail.’. . . ‘My father’s life was at stake. I am Haydée, daughter of Ali Teblin, Pasha of Yanina, and of Vasiliki, his beloved wife’” (Dumas 357). Fernand betrays Ali Pasha by letting Turks kill him rather than helping his friend. This makes Fernand also betray Haydee and her mother, who had expected Fernand to be a helpful friend to Ali. Although Fernand tries to play it safe and tries to show that he did not betray Ali Pasha, Haydée knows better, “‘. . .It was you, who with that decree, obtained the pasha’s ring as a token of his authority! It was you who sold my mother and me into slavery! Murderer! Murderer! You still bear the blood of my father on your forehead. Look at him, all of you!’”(Dumas 360). Haydée does not go down without a fight as she proves Fernand is at fault. Fernand has done more damage than he knows and this part of the book is when he begins regretting everything all at once. Fernand not only betrays Ali Pasha, but he unintentionally betrays Haydée and her mother.
Without noticing all he has done, Fernand easily becomes the ultimate betrayer of T​he Count of Monte Cristo. N​ot only is Fernand a betrayer of trust, he is also a betrayer of his own wife, Edmond and several characters throughout the novel.
