What does true friendship mean? Is doing fun things with one another the definition of true friendship or something even more great? What makes the value true of friendship? Friendship is sticking together, sacrifice, being true, and disagreeing. In the book The Fellowship of the Ring, the theme of friendship is shown strongly. Each one of these occurs throughout the entire book. Friendships are tested strained, but in the end not broken, that shows true Friendship. Friendship starts early in the book. Many people come to Bilbo’s party but do not come around to help him if he needed it. They came from miles around and some he barely knew about. Frodo had always been around to help. Even though they had a biological relationship, they were …show more content…
A true friend sticks with their friend through thick and thin. All the characters that volunteered to go with Frodo became good friends, they bonded. When the orcs attacked in Moria they fought to keep Frodo and the ring safe. When Frodo got stabbed by the Black Rider’s sword, Sam never left his bedside. Sam acts like a true friend, even though Frodo was unconscious, Sam would wait there for him. When the hobbits got tired in the snow while climbing the mountain trying to keep up with the humans, the humans cared for them and carried them as much as they could. When the members of the fellowship had the chance to go their separate ways all of them wanted to stay and help Frodo and to make sure that he made it safely to Mordor to destroy the ring. “There was a silence. ‘They all resolved to go forward’ said Galadriel looking in their eyes.”(475) They risked their lives to protect Frodo in his time of danger. Sticking with a friend persists as huge sacrifice. It can as simple as staying with them while they are waiting for a ride or as tough as staying with them if they have cancer. Having a close friend at your side helps to ease pain or take away the tears. The members of fellowship all had to sacrifice leaving their homes for a ring, leaving their family and other friends besides the ones that they have made now. Gandalf gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, so that the party could go on without worrying about the
Seeing that Bilbo is a hobbit who doesn’t like visitors, he does not have many friends. This was until Bilbo met Gandalf.
friendship that it is so valuable? And, more specifically, how does this truth fit with
Furthermore, Frodo archives plenty of good friendships out of the ritual. However, Richard Gombrich theory of belief explained the difference and the importance of cognitive and affective belief and how a person’s words may suggest a different belief than their action, but this also shows that sometimes both cognitive and affective belief can be equally important. Lastly, Jacques Derrida idea about “text” is used to explain the importance of “text” and the different meaning “text” has. All these theories all explain the main idea that friendship is important and friends will be there to help you when
During the beginning of the novel, Bilbo and Gandalf meet to embark on a new adventure. Gandalf is considered shallow and becomes friends with creatures who can further his career. While Bilbo is on his front porch, Gandalf approaches him and states, “‘But I have no time to blow smoke-rings this morning. I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone’” (4). At their first meeting, Gandalf searches for his next associate to help him through the next quest. Bilbo most likely would not have been friends with Gandalf if it was not for the adventure they would go on because of how predictable and unadventurous hobbits are, nevertheless at the end of the book, the two are more close and continues to keep in touch throughout the next books. Towards the end of the book, Gandalf admires Bilbo on his changes, “‘My dear Bilbo!’ he said. ‘Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were’” (302). Gandalf admits to Bilbo on how much he has achieved from going on the adventure, as a result, Bilbo is more advanced compared to the Bilbo at the beginning of the book. Without a doubt, Bilbo would not be friends with Gandalf if it was not for Bilbo taking one of his more daring decisions: to follow the pack and go through with the
Friendship is when one person has a strong bond with another, the power of friendship is when one friend does something exponential for another, even if it means they risk something important in their lives. For example, in The Outsiders, Johnny saved Ponyboy from the falling lumber, he saved Pony, but at the same time he risked something of own, his life. After Dally’s failed attempt of taking back Johnny from the grips of Death, Dally couldn’t live without Johnny. So when Johnny died, Dally had no reason to live. In the novel, The Outsiders author S.E Hinton suggests that the power of friendship is the strongest and most reliable bond one can have, and it stays with people forever.
Frodo, the ring bearer, is most definitely a helpful piece to the puzzle, but also people like Sam, Merry, and Pippin. They would do anything for each other, and Sam really shows his loyalty he says, “Coming Mr. Frodo! Coming! Called Sam, and flung himself from the bank, clutching at the departing boat.” Sam wants to finish the journey and help Frodo so much that he runs into a river chasing after Frodo even though he cannot swim.
To sum it all up, it can be difficult to go about life without even a single friend, yet we all seem to manage. Friends get you through all kinds of situations. I wish I could maintain all the friends I currently have, but I realize and understand that the possibility is slight. We live and we learn. We grow in and out of friendships in accordance to our life’s expectancies and changes. Friends briefly touch your heart and some will stay longer than others. Personality and its uniqueness is everything, because no one wants several of the same friendships, all doing the same thing. With the friendships I have obtained, as long as they respect your beliefs, share the same interest in being your friend, and place all their trust in you; there’s a good friendship just waiting to happen.
What is your definition of a true friend? Well, to me, a true friend is someone who understands you, accepts you for who you are, and is willing to do anything for you. While reading John Steinbeck’s classic, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie maintain a true friendship despite all the ups and downs they encounter. After Lennie Small, a man as gigantic as a mammoth with a pea-sized brain, is caught touching a girl’s dress in the town of Weed, he and his best friend, an average migrant worker, George Milton, travel a strenuous journey to the town of Soledad and start working on a ranch. The young men come to realize that they have a true, brotherly bond and nothing can separate them.
Friendships were key to the survival of the Fellowship as a group as well as individuals, and by extension the survival of the free peoples of Middle Earth. The fidelity between Sam and Frodo is perhaps the most compelling case for the power of friendship against the forces of darkness. Sam’s loyalty to Frodo is shown by his constant care for his master’s rest, food, and Sam’s reminders of home and hope for the journey ahead. It is also Sam who remains suspicious of the creature Gollum in an attempt to preserve their safety while Frodo shows mercy and friendship towards Sméagol, Gollum’s less dark side, as they bond over their ties to the Ring. This second friendship purchases Gollum’s guidance into Mordor. Merry and Pippin’s friendship enables their safe escape from the clutches of the Uruk-hai at the beginning of the film. Pippin’s desire for safety for his kinsmen and hi...
Temptation: Everyone faces temptation in his life, while few are able to resist temptation, others are taken over by the influential power it possess. The power of temptation causes one to oversee the evil and be consumed by the good because addiction exerts a long and powerful influence over one. When taken over by temptation, one craves for the object of addiction, losses of control over its use, and continues involvement with it despite adverse consequences. Those who are unable to resist the temptation become dominated by the object while others see the evil that the object holds. People become addicted to anything that gives them temporary relief, but has negative consequences that one cannot foresee because of the power of the addiction.
Friends can be classified in many ways, friends can be real or fake, and friends have many characteristics. Society often throws the term “friend” around making in a loose term. Many times someone gets mistaken as a friend because they are enjoyable to be around, but is that what creates a friendship? Friendship has much more meaning than what society gives; there are things that attract a friendship, there are ways to classify a friend, and there is things real friends to verse fake friends.
This is the epitome of loyalty, to devote yourself to someone or something. Frodo and Gandalf both show strong traits of leadership but overall Frodo is more in control of the fellowship. Gandalf is more like Frodo’s advisor that he treats as equal to him. Frodo shows this when Gandalf leads the fellowship on the right path throughout the journey, but whenever there was a major decision to be made Gandalf left it up to Frodo to decide what the best choice was. You see this when the fellowship is on the mountain and Souromon is casting a spell to make it unsafe, Gandalf knows that if they go to the mine the Belrog will come to get them.
Whether someone is in need of advice, a favor, or just someone to talk to, a dependable friend would be first to volunteer a listening ear or a lending hand. A true friend is just as dependable as a sidekick is to a superhero. Whether its Batman and Robin or Mermaid Man and Barnacle boy, they could depend on one another even when not battling villains, for they know they have a sincere friendship. Having a dependable friend makes a friendship feel genuine. It builds into the feeling of appreciation knowing that someone actually cares, and a dependable person not only shows that through their words, but more so through their actions. Dependable friends are true friends who are approachable, there to listen, to help, and to confide in. A dependable friend not only builds up a true friendship, but one of trust, something expected from a true
