"...Maybe a kind of heartbreak of being in the world when you don't know how to be" - Felix Arneson; this quote is from a girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow. The quote is advice given by the main character's grandfather suggesting that merely because you exist in the world it does not mean you always know how to live in it. People who live in this world often don't want to, and that is what Arneson is referring to. Just because you were born into this world does not mean that you should know how to live in it. Character is what you are in the dark." Dwight Lyman Moody: the quote implies that you are most yourself when you are alone. You can always act like you are somebody else, but when no one is watching, your character perseveres. The advice that Arneson was giving to his granddaughter is true for the humanity behind it. Not everyone who is born in this world feels as if they belong in it. People don't like their lives and turn to things like drugs or gambling to provoke addiction. This is when it relates to Moody's quote. Anyone can act as if they are enjoying their current job or relationship, but it's what they do when they are alone that speaks most about them. It's not uncommon for people's character in the dark to be the worse version than the one people see. Going back to Arneson, someone who doesn't know how to handle communication with their partner may feel frustrated and cheated but come home and tell their significant other they love them. It's more common for people to mask their intentions, it's very common for manipulation to be a go-to. Someone who doesn't know how to apologize may gaslight or twist someone's perspective to match the appearance of the victim, but they know deep down they are just morphing the actual truth. Actions speak louder than words, but intention overrides both, just because someone did what appears to be the right thing doesn't mean the person did it knowing it
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson. That quote is my favorite because it shows you that everyone is the same ,but there is some people that stand out more than others like my hero Fernando Valenzuela.
“I kept asking myself if I felt different, if I was different. The answer was always yes. I was no longer nothing…” (Avi 221) This is a famous quote from the historical fiction book Crispin The Cross of Lead, written by Avi. This book is about a boy named Crispin, who goes through many trials and meets many people who help him find his true identity. Through the story Crispin has three “fathers” in his life, Lord Furnival, Bear, and God the Father and he learns several important things from them.

“I have lived every day of my life asking myself ‘is what I’m doing reflective of who I am? Or who I want to be?’ If not...”
I believe this quote means a lot of things. You cannot go on with life if you constantly put yourself down because of something you did in your past. Many people are dealing with depression because they cannot forgive themselves. In order to have a good life, you need to move on from your mistakes. When people hold things back and keep secrets about themselves, they are in constant worry about someone finding out and exploiting it. It is very good to face your demons and then move on from them.

People have free will. People have the ability to choose right from wrong. With this responsibility people need to think about the outcome of actions and how it will affect society.
“I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.” As a kid Sherman Alexie grew up on a reservation for Indians. He was mostly expected to be stupid as every other Indian kid, but he wasn’t he was actually very smart. He taught himself how to read and write by using a comic book. This comic book was about Superman. He would use the pictures and the captions to put together what they were making out. So that’s how he learned to read and write.
Throughout Daniel Wallace’s novel, Big Fish, Edward Bloom encompasses the meaning of the title. He is immortalized through the many tall tales he has shared with his son, Will. The stories are a depiction of a man who is larger than life, someone who is too big for a small town. Edwards passion for being remembered and loved followed him to his deathbed, where he passed on his stories to his son. The term “Big Fish” is used to reference the magnificence of Edwards life, and is an embodiment of the larger than life stories that he passes down to Will.
I don’t understand these characters at all. Most of them are inhuman, selfish brats, and I don’t share any sort of empathy whatsoever with them.
Keating (Robin Williams). As the above quote says, one should never be resigned to dullness, but instead you should break out and try something new. It is our differences that make us great. However, one cannot expect to be different if they never express themselves or speak up.
The passage ends with, "it is more difficult and more bitter when a man fails alone.
